When we thought our door was going to be too small, that is exactly what my GC said he could do, was cut it down. We too bought the Fluence (which by the way I was told is the exact same door that's on "in stock" on the floors at the Big Box stores) and when we discovered the door was actually going to be too small, my GC built out the whole wall so it would fit and not have a funky edge.

I wouldn't blame the tile guy unless he's your general contractor for the job. I hate to say this but in construction you can't just assume something will fit. Things vary in size and it would have been wise to have discussed this with him BEFORE laying the tile. When you add the thickness of the backerboard, thinset & tile, it can take as much as 1.5 inches on each side of your opening and this needs to be taken into consideration when you are measuring for the door.

I hope that Bill or Mongo step in with a suggestion, and you're able to find a resolution.

Thanks so much-the only reason mine was special order is because I went with a brass trim for the doors and they don't keep those in stock. I have learned my lesson and will never just assume that just because its supposed to fit that it'll fit. We should have taken into account the tile,backerboard and thinset. I'll just hold my breath and hope they fit. Oh well.

AFAIK, the 59-5/8" is the maximum for the bypass door. It can fit a smaller opening, but the doors will overlap, and it's a PITA to clean if the overlap is too big. But if you're talking a fraction of an inch, that shhuldn't be a problem.

Cassie, if they just need to cut it down less than an inch and you're paying one of those "expensive" contractors from Home Depot to do it I would make a fuss with the store and ask for a refund for the installation. You can hire a handyman to install it for the same cost or usually much less than what those contractors charge and you may even find they do a better job. According to my GC it's easy to do, he's done it many many times for other people, and something that they should be willing to do.

Thanks everybody. I trust you guys more than the installer because he seemed unsure of himself. I don't know where they get these guys. I will try the handyman company that we have in town. What's about right price for installation.

If I remember correctly, our local stores wanted 145.00 to install. My GC did it for 75.00 but that's because he was already here working on other things so he wasn't making a special trip. My best guess is probably around 100.00.

My hubbie told me yesterday he would try to install. I don't think so. He is pretty handy and pretty good with stuff-but when he tried to install my french doors it was a mess. He kept cutting them down to make them fit-finally we had to have a professional come and install. That was funny. Is this or can this be a job for a DIY.

I don't see why not, unless like my DH, he has problems getting things level and straight. :c)

Before you decide, have him open the box, look at all the parts, read ALL the directions and then make a judement call knowing if he gets it wrong you'll have to buy a new door & pay someone else to install it. If he honestly feels it's outside of his skill set call in a pro. I did this exact same thing yesterday. Hoping to save 150.00 I asked my DH if he could install the new faucets. He read the instructions, looked under the sink and priced the parts. In the end, he said he probably could, but it would be a royal PIA...so we're having our contractor do it.

Okay I will make my daughter take a picture and will post it. My shower doors came in tonight and hopefully they will be installed by the weekend. My daughter is still trying to decide on a paint color.
