What's up with this Webcam stuff - virgin user here

I have a Gateway laptop with a build in webcam. My mother has an Acer laptop with one as well. Since we're both webcam virgins, we've been trying to chat online using the video cam feature. She has a 0.3 Acer Crystal Eye Webcam and mine just says Camera Assist Software. Both of our computers meet or exceed the specs needed.

We're able to see each other, but when she talks, it's like she's saying one word over and over again. Like it's skipping (like a record). She's not able to hear me at all.

I thought webcams had decent live video, but both of ours keep freezing up - like freeze frame, then continues, then freezes. I thought we'd be able to see each other and talk like it came from a video camera (well that's what this is suppose to be right?)

Both our our graphics cards are basic.

Can anyone enlighten me on the workings of a webcam and what could be going on? Do solo webcams (not built in) work better? Thanks
