It really doesn't matter where the outside thermocouple junction is as long as YOU know where it is. For instance I have an indoor/outdoor inside my greenhouse with the "outside" lead positioned under a typar cover at plant level(plants are planted in soil). This "outside" temperature value from the thermometer face is telling me the temperature that the plants are probably experiencing under the cover. The "indoor" reading is the inside greenhouse (above typar cover) temperature. I reset the thermometer regularly after viewing the high and low maximum range for the day. It is great to be able to read a temperature from a remote location without having to navigate to that location... the indoor/outdoor thermometer will work great for that purpose even if you need to switch logic to understand where the reading is coming from. As far as temperature outside the greenhouse... it is nice to know how cold or hot it is but I don't have any way of controling it. I guess it could be a guage for wishful hoping that maybe the plants can get by for a few more hours before supplemental heat is needed.

Some brands of FD will twist or warp if the floor is far enough out of level or the adjusters are set too far apart, some high, some low, trying to compensate. One indication of that can be the misalignment you have noticed.

the damper should not have any opperation. Most of the time the plate is removed. If you suceed in closing it you will be dealing with co and co/2 gasses in your living space, that is if you are lucky enough to figure that out. Because code requires a damper or means to prevent drafts, openings in your insulation envelope glass doors are required to fullfill that need. In short they are required. No wonder that room is cold in winter. I agree with the other poster that gas log sets provide little heat but a fire look. If your town did it job correctly, and the home being only 7 years old, then the gas logs and there manufacturer should be listed along with lots of other info that went into your home. Once you know the manufacturer and model you should be able to down load the instructions manual and find the answers to your questions
