the damper should not have any opperation. Most of the time the plate is removed. If you suceed in closing it you will be dealing with co and co/2 gasses in your living space, that is if you are lucky enough to figure that out. Because code requires a damper or means to prevent drafts, openings in your insulation envelope glass doors are required to fullfill that need. In short they are required. No wonder that room is cold in winter. I agree with the other poster that gas log sets provide little heat but a fire look. If your town did it job correctly, and the home being only 7 years old, then the gas logs and there manufacturer should be listed along with lots of other info that went into your home. Once you know the manufacturer and model you should be able to down load the instructions manual and find the answers to your questions

I was off tuna for quite awhile too after having a very fishy can. I'm not a fish eater. I started eating it again a few months ago and buy premium white albacore in a gold can. It's either Bumble Bee or Chicken of the Sea--I don't have any right now to check. I have the pouch in my pantry but haven't tried it yet. But I do add a good spoonful of sweet relish to mask the tuna taste. I don't like deli meats so it's hard to come up with a lunch every day.

Subtropix - Thanks! That's just the sort of feedback I was hoping for. I believe poison oak is also in the same family. At least it has the same scientific name (Toxicodendron). The Japanese lacquer tree is also related. I'm terrified by the idea of wood deliberately treated with urushiol oil. Suzi - Los Angeles, yes. North county, though, so it gets a bit colder. Or at least it used to. This past winter it never dropped below 35F, but a few winters ago we had a freeze that killed my landlady's unprotected citrus trees back to their rootstock. I think I could protect it if a freeze was coming, though. I'm not allergic to the fruit - I love them. At least the smaller yellow ones with the softer flesh. I don't like the more fibrous red ones as much. I'm not as much worried about my own reaction (I would know to wear gloves if I were going to be pruning it back a lot) but I would not want guests to brush up against it and get a bad rash. If it's in a low enough concentration that you have to get a lot of the sap on you to get the rash, then I'm not so concerned.

Townlakescakes thx yes that's how it was installed at the ceiling and I certainly don't want a house fire so I guess i have someone do it right or don't do it. I know it was pretty costly to have an electrician do all our high ceiling lighting as there was an extra charge for scaffolding just wondered if I could avoid that extra cost, but not worth a risk.
