Waiter! There's an ad in my toolbar.

Something installed itself in my toolbar the other day. It's a blue circle with a ? mark in it. A couple of minutes later this popped up.

From reading it you know it's an ad tring to get you to but their product, and sure enough, every few minutes it pops up to remind you of that.

The question, being of course, is there a way I can remove this from my toolbar?

P.S. Do I still have to tip the waiter?

Are you running programs like AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy or Spywareblaster? If not you should be doing so. Download, install and update any or all of them and run. That should cure it if this is a simple adware program. These are all freeware programs.

Minnie you asked me this question. not to steal the thread thirdfrt but what is your opinion on Bazooka? I've had that for centuries it seems TIA To be honest with you I am unfamiliar with the software Bazooka but, I did look it up to see what program you were talking about. I have never used Bazooka and so I am unable to give you an opinion on it. Sorry. Maybe there is someone here that is more knowledgeable about the program that can give you an opinion on it. not to steal the thread thirdfrt Minnie, I don't feel like you stole the thread at all, unfortunately I was not able to answer your question and anyone who is knowledgeable about Bazooka is more than welcome to answer your question on this thread, I don't mind at all. For those of you who mentioned Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Spyware Blaster, I have them on this OS. I have had Spyware Blaster for quite awhile now and I downloaded the other two last year. I am very pleased with these programs and appreciate the help that was given to me so that I could download them. I use to have AdAware when it was a good program and thought I would take the chance with the current AdAware and I have become very disappointed with it. You are right it is not the same and that is why I want to remove it. I have given my son the links for the programs that you have recomended and for the removal of AdAware. It just seemed odd that we were both experiencing the same problem with our firewalls and like I said that was the only thing that we had in common on our computers. My sister and Nephew both had problems and they uninstalled AdAware and their computers started working correctly. About Irfanview, I think I will remove the old one rather than write over it and start fresh. I don't need anymore conflicts. One last thing I downloaded Auslogics and was surprised how well it did. My computer was really starting to act up and at first I didn't think I was going to be able to run a check disk. I messed with it and finally got it to work and after I ran the check disk I used the Auslogics Disk Defrag and my computer came back to life so to speak. ok lets see if I can tackle all this LOL yes you can change up the items and names to simply just have the favicon for the site there, just go to that one on the bar and right click on it then choose properties there you can change the name, eliminate the name or just put an initial what ever you want. If you have several that deal with one subject like news for example create a folder on that bar and move all the news related ones into that folder, which will give you more room. Tab mix plus the add on will give you a lot of options too. To change up your "chrome" as it is called like I did on mine so I only have 2 bars and no empty space, go up to the top and click on view> customize> and once that has opened then you can drag stuff around from bar to bar and move things where ever you want to, it is very similar to unlocking the bar so you can move it freely. you can do away with any buttons you do not need by just dragging them off the bars and into that box that opened when you hit customize, I also used from that box the smaller icons so I could fit more. I never liked having my bookmarks in sidebar and have not messed with it. I do think there are some specific add ons for that though. what you can do with your screenshot is upload it to imageshack then from there you can get the forum code for the thumbnail to post here so it will not take up much room, the code you want will have the Clipboard is where your computer saves things when you click on copy then you go some where and hit paste and it posts it from the clipboard. With fireshot once you click on the big red S and capture the pic you have options at the top of what to do with it, one upload that will upload it to a web server and give you the code for that picture to post here in a forum, Save click that to save the picture to your pc this is a good option just put it in your pictures folder and you can always find it. there are many options, but with fireshot I believe you can only capture the open page not the actual browser itself. Even when choosing full page it only captures the open page in the browser. so you will probably want to just use your screen print button that is on your pc. Up on the top row of buttons is the Print Screen button just click on that and it saves it to your clipboard, open your photo editing program and paste the pic in there, then you can save it, Also an easy way to do it is to open an email and click paste in the email and it will add it there, I do that sometimes and just email it to myself especially if I will be needing it on one of my other computers since I can access my email from all of them.

Glad we were able to help Archie, nice work getting it cleaned off. Thank you Randy. I suspect all who offer assistance to those in trouble get as much satisfaction as I do when someone reports back that the problem has been solved. Probably 30 years ago I took a basic electricity course taught by an electrical engineer. One of the class asked him why he wasted his time teaching us as it was obvious it was not the money. He replied that he got as much satisfaction as we did we did. Because he worked in a narrow field and was afraid of getting rusty in areas outside his job. The class asked questions and he needed to have the answers. I feel that way about helping with computers, it keeps me on my toes and as I age I find my memory is not as good as it once was.

That's what I paid for the one I had, and I got a full refund and didn't have to take a replacement....you have to stand up for yourself many times in this life...I think they were glad to get rid of me also :o) Send it back, send it back, send it back... I didn't ask them for boxes...I went to a local packing place and had it professionally packed...they weren't at all surprised that I was sending a Dell Computer back. I was a little concerned about the plain brown boxes and if Dell would accept them, but they said nothing about the boxes when giving me "send back" instructions...just make sure you have the componets in the right box (they'll tell you) and have it marked on the outside of each box what is inside. My monitor, keyboard and software were in one box...the other things were in the other box........get rid of the thing. I had mine longer than the two weeks trying to get it working...tell them you no longer want a Dell

Yes, I have AdAware and last week download something call spyware terminator. I just updated them both and ran a full scan. They don't seem to be touching it.
I'll try the others and maybe an online scan if all else fails.

The next time it opens, bring up your task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), click on "Processes," and see if you can guess the name of this little pest from the 35-50+ processes that are running. You might then be able to do a search on your computer with the name and maybe see where it set up housekeeping. You could also use msconfig to look at your Startup items and see what might be there that's new. Just a couple of thoughts...good luck.

Think I might rightclick the command or tool bar and choose customize it to see if that new goodie is in the list of add/remove toolbar goodies.

As of today I've downloaded and tried everything suggested. None of the programs have touched it yet.

As for where it's hiding, can't find it. To me I don't see anything out of the ordinary listed anywhere.

Went to two different online scans, housecall and bitdefender. They did find some stuff, but it wasn't the right thing.

I'm going to keep trying different programs and look for it. Maybe I'll stumble onto it or a program that will remove it.

Archie work your way through Crockett's plan linked below. This is very in depth and requires time. Do it in stages and walk away if frustration takes a hold. Do not be intimidated by the huge writeup, take it line by line and you will do just great.

Where does it take you to when you click the bubble ?
Might search that site and partial wording from the bubble text to see if yahoo or google turns up exploits.

I searched partial text and looks like it possibly could be part of a popular a trojan. Running something like ewido might be a good idea.

You know, it might be easier if I just become a computer technicion. Now if I could just like computers enough too.

Archie it looks like Mickie was on the right track by having you click the bubble.

Take a look at the thread below, luckily it is only the person in trouble and the person with the fix writing so there is no muddy water to wade through.
