Help - wood French door (attn. ccoombs1)

We are just about to start building and have pretty much decided to go with Andersen 200 series windows throughout the house. We will be getting the pine interior windows and staining them.

I also need a French door, but the only Andersen French door that comes in wood that we could stain to match the windows is around $2,500. I hoped I could find one cheaper that would be a nice enough door. It will be an exterior door opening onto a 10-foot deep covered porch. I would like it to swing outward. Any suggestions for a good, not as expensive door? Or a good source for wood doors in general?

ccoombs1: I saw your post from March about a wood French door. If you see this, would you mind telling me if you ended up getting it and what brand it was?

This is what we have. They're HURD french doors with 9 lite marginal on the outside of dual pane glass. They are pine and we custom stained all of our interiors. The exteriors are white.
I'm sorry I really don't remember the cost of each door since all windows and doors were purchased by our GC before we even broke ground (he got a deal). Since we have 9 of them and each is flanked by 2 stationary doors, I'm goin' tell you there's no way they cost anything like Andersen's $2500 per door!!
Hummm.. (scratches head) now if I can just remember my math...27x$2500.=$67500.00

Thanks, kats. Wow, you have some nice doors and windows there. I like your Prairie grills. I checked the Hurd site, and it looks like they have a dealer near me so I'll check them out. By the way, the Andersen doors I mentioned were $2,500 for a unit with a pair of doors - not per door! - but still ...

can you post pictures? This group seems to be more visual spacial and it will help to see the room in context. I think that yes, you can do the door in 2 different finishes to match the corresponding rooms. I dont see why that wouldn't work. But how will the doors open? in or out and in or out into which area/room? Just thinking you would have to consider that if you ever leave them open, they will be (at least one finish) in the other room where it will not match..does that makes sense?

Not sure this helps, but we went with Anderson 400 series. We have a sliding 6' patio door, a 4' french door and just oredered another 5' french door. Love them. Real wood on the inside, vinyl on the outside. We chose the terratone color for exterior vinyl. We have three sets of french doors and one full glass with two full glass sidelites plus twelve other to the floor or low windows with sills on the main level of our home. Three young cats. They too love looking out the windows. I've found that they tend to leave the sheers that are double rodded on the french doors since they can see through them without having to move them. They just sit close. The curtains in the ladies parlor are loose at the bottom, therefore move. You know if something moves a cat will go after it. They have snagged them something terrible. Luckily so far I can pull all but one snag out. Before you spend all sorts of money on new window covers that may or may not work, I think I'd invest in a couple mroe cafe rods and attach your sheers at the bottom and see how that works. If it works you can always buy new sheers if you need to. The only time our kitties (all 18 months and younger)have used their paws around the sheers is when a bug gets behind one and they want the bug. Oly - Don't mind sharing at all... Its 3100 sq/ft, 4 br and 3.5 baths. The balcony area is off the bonus room and not the master. Here are some pictures from soon after we moved in so it looks a little bare but truth be told we are still trying to get the place properly decorated! Maggie - thank you very much... I was just trying to find out what company did the shutters so I could find the exact color but wasn't able to get that info. It was one of the color options from the shutter manufacturer so we didn't pick out the paint at home depot or whatever. I'll dig around some more and hopefully get the color name to you. We were looking for that french blue look and think we found just that so we were very pleased.

We used Barnett Millworks pine french doors. Only 7 sets on the main level. Tru-divided glass, insulated glass. I don't remember the cost but we built 2yrs ago. I can look it up, if you'd like.

We used a rolled aluminum on the lower veranda doors since we get a lot of rain blown in.
