AVG Free Edition 2011 Reboot problems

Message says: AVG Free Edition 2011 Reboot. Computer needs to be restarted in order to finish updating process. (Cannot update while system is using them.)

I did the reboot yesterday and boot stopped on blue Windows screen for what seemed a long time. Finally got a screen with choices, one of which was "set to a previous time when things were working". Use arrow keys to select choice." (Mouse was gone.)

I managed to do a system restore but now that message is popping up again today. What to do? Anyone else getting this? Any help, please? Using XP sp3.

From what I can see the closest match to your issue is or could be

That this issue has affected computers running on the Windows 64-bit operating systems. Do you run a 64Bit operating System? See link.

Hi Zep, almost positive I don't have a 64-bit OS. I did go to the AVG forum but didn't find anything. Surprising given all that going on in the blog you linked. Didn't bother to ask there because I find their moderators hostile, and not at all helpful.

Wow, according to a lot of those comments on the blog link, I got off easy. And all this happened in December. Maybe why I didn't see anything about it now. Wonder why mine waited until now. I think this might be the time to ditch AVG for Avira or Avast. Thanks. Sandy

my question would be how exactly did you remove McAfee because it takes a special program to do the full removal if you did not use their special tool then I would get this and use it to fully remove all aspects of McAfee which can definitely leave a lot behind and cause conflicts. Using AppRemover you will definitely want to get rid of the registry cleaner and not be using that. Hey, DA! Love those words "no muss no fuss" However... I was just looking into this for my Wxp, and am concerned about AVG's link scanner. When I upgraded my FF browser yesterday, it disabled the link scanner in my old AVG, saying it was incompatable with the new browser. I'm wondering if it will still be incompatable when I upgrade AVG. Am I going to have to choose between FF and AVG????? Thanks J

I'm not sure what you are actually asking, but I am going to presume you chose to "run" the download rather than "save" it and install from the "save" file. If I am correct the requirement to reboot makes perfect sense. This action would be required just as if you were installing from the "save"d file or from a disk. The source file is of no concern. It is the requirement for configuration of the install. I never recommend an overwrite unless mandated by the manufacturer. Too many orphan files, obsolete code and .dlls, and chances of a conflict. A clean install of any application is the only way to go if you wish to be care free. DA

For sure always watch each step of the download and the install for the checked items you do NOT want like extra toolbars or other stuff. In most cases the AV programs insert themselves so deeply into the system that just using the Control panel removal does not do a complete job and leaves a lot of stuff cluttering up your pc which can in some cases cause issues and conflicts so using either a dedicated removal tool from the AV company or a full app remover program will do a much more thorough job of a good clean removal. That is why I always recommend doing it that way. Most of the AV companies do provided a dedicated removal tool for their products and that is also an acceptable method. Here is a link to Corrine's blog where she provides the links to some of those removal tools. Antivirus Product Removal Tools Using those or app remover is fine. And also be sure as you go through the selection process you stick with the free version and not a trial version which will then want you to pay for it after the trial. Another good place to get the downloads from that will make sure that nothing extra is checked, you only get the item you want is at ninite site. Ninite you will need to install their installer and select what ever programs you want from the list and it will do all the rest for you. They also now offer an updater program, I have no experience with it or how well it works, but the installer for the apps has been recommended for several years now with good success. If I were you, I would remove AVG 2011 and download AVG9 it would work much better for XP then 2011...

If you are indeed 32-bit:

Open the AVG interface. On the Toolbar select Tools>Advanced Settings. In the appearing window on the left side click on the plus in front of Update. Click on Manage. On the appearing right panel select the lower bar Revert Virus Database to Previous Version. If all goes well and the problem was only a corrupt dat file this could resolve your concern. However, if the concern is a by-product of the recent version upgrade you will have to remove AVG entirely and re-install. Be sure to use the removal tool.

If you had no problems until recently I wouldn't go back to v9. The prior version before the recent upgrade, 10.0.1191, should be just fine.

DA, I tried the interface and it went well, but timed out. Now in the process of downloading from your link. I've had no problems until this, and I've used AVG for years. Almost finished. Fingers crossed. Thank you. Sandy

Ravencajun, sorry I was working on things and typing so didn't see your post until now. I actually responded to that post in your link and was having no problems. Nice to see that, because I couldn't remember when I installed ED2011. So the darn thing worked for about 6-8 weeks before all this. Just don't know.

Success! I hope. So far, so good. I feel like I've been wrestling with this thing. It rejected, didn't want to install because there was a newer update. MS security popped into the tray to let me know I had no security. Don't know what all else was going on but finally have AVG 10.0.1191 and hoping that "needs to reboot" is gone. Thanks for the help. Great. Fingers crossed.

Now make sure that the AVG automatic updates are turned off. Sooner or later it will want to upgrade to the current version, 10.0.1204. By doing your updates manually you can deny this upgrade until you are sure all is truly well. When convinced all is OK, enable your auto update and upgrade accordingly.
