Susie, I have searched & can't find any Avast on it. I also went into the folders. I just did a search on this one & there is quite a bit Norton leftover on it still. AVG is on too & was working when I stopped using this one. I hope to have another one Monday if everyone would just get well..I don't drive (never learned) & all my rides are truly sick. Cat, I think I will try the XP tonite. I do know it has a LOT of problems & need to be started over..it is not worth spending $150 to do that. Nite before last I was trying to fill out a form to order something.. it took over 30 minutes to do it.. The cursor kept freezing plus it wouldn't scroll without freezing. Some on here can vouch for all the problems I have had. If I can get it running I can at least check to see if there is anything else I want saved. I tried to keep things saved as I knew this day was coming. Yes I know now the APC is probably why it wouldn't turn on but I don't think that had anything to do with the other problems. The XP took about 20 minutes to reboot.. this 98 is very fast doing it. Thanks, Dar

Woah now! I would not say that. Only one anti spyware is barely enough. Most people install 2 or 3 as these do not normally run unless to set them to run. Having more than one of these allows you to use either and if in doubt use both at any given time. There are many free ones to choose from, all with inherent strengths and weaknesses. There are also too many sound alikes which are bad news indeed so tread warily when deciding. Here are a few reputable ones I either do or have used on my computers Spywareblaster Spybot Search & Destroy Superantispyware AdAware 2007 I also had the free AVG anti spyware program installed and was quite happy with that. We'll see how good the reports are on version 8 of their Anti virus with anti spyware built in, hopefully it will be as good as both running separately.

I'm glad to see this thread re-upped. I'm reposting my original problem, hoping for a solution: I tried to update to v9 and got the message that said my Update Manager was disabled. Next message said to go to Tools/ Manager; there I'm given two choices. 1. Delete temporary update files 2. Revert virus data base to previous version. No 1 is Are you sure you want to delete temp files?, and No 2 is Warning. Some of the newest threats may not be detected. I've never run into this before when updating. HP WINXP SP2 TIA Sue

Tumbleweed, Now all you need to do is edit the Windows Registry to remove those three entries. Before you do that, you need to insure that you have a good backup registry. To backup the registry go to start, run, type in "scanregw" without the quotes, click OK. It should scan the registry, and then ask you if you want to make a backup, click yes. To edit the Windows Registry go to start, run, type in "regedit" without the quotes. Click OK. When regedit opens, hitting ctrl+F should bring up a find window. In this window, type in AVGCORE.VXD and click find. Once found, right-click the key and select delete. Repeat for the other two Virtual Device Drivers (VXD's). All of the above VXD's should be located somewhere in the registry key named: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD Once complete, shutdown and restart windows and I think you will find that the problem has disappeared.
