What is the best way to remove AVG av on my Win98? Add/remove and/or some other type of software - Won't use CCleaner. Concerned about getting the leftovers before installing Avast.

Look in your program list and put your mouse over avg see if an un install option appears. If there isn't I always play it save when removing an Anti Virus and boot to safe mode doing this stops the Anti virus from running and lets you remove it, otherwise in some cases you will get the window "unable to remove because the file is in use, in safe mode you can be sure the file "Avg" will not be in use. It prevents the problem of getting it only half un installed.

It appears that it is gone. I used the Remover instructions you gave me RC on the Google home page and never saw AVG when I clicked on the the AVG toolbar options/advance. Nor did I see it in IE. The only option for search providers was Google listed as default/enabled/not available. I saw it in Firefox and removed it. I have only uploaded that program a few months back but never used it. I removed the Google toolbar on the culprit Google home page that was with the AVG toolbar and the AVG disappeared. Then I brought back Google. I rebooted and it is still gone and not listed as a program.I am holding my breath as it is a backward way of following the directions though I tried carefully to do that. grandms.Your thought about the company called "On call 25/8" has been running through my mind since they came out and created a pw to get into Windows last week. They had my computer a couple of months ago when I couldn't find a graphic device and did a thorough look. There was something wrong about the guys paying forward pitch that bothered me. For $750 I could get so many hours of future help in my home. He also would take care of installing my new router and Apple apps. There are other On Call 25/8 companies and wonder if anyone has heard of them. Raven thanks again for standing by as I made my way through these instructions. I hope this is the end. This afternoon I read all the online complaints about AVG - some going back 3 years. I have an external back up device that may have AVG on it now.Maybe I should throw it away My feeling is that computers are not here to stay. For what it's worth... The beginning of last month I was having the redirect problem ( Which AVG Free DID NOT find! )... I took the computer into the shop and my tech said he found a rootkit virus... After he got rid of it I had him uninstall AVG, install Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareBytes and redo SpyBot ( He also installed I. E. 8 and ran all the scans after he cleaned it up )... The very next night I ran a Full scan with Security Essentials and it found " Virus: Win32/Alureon.H ", it Disinfected the file and told me which file to delete... Two days later Security Essentials found " Exploit: Java/CVE-2008-5353.1 " and Removed all the files... ( BTW, I ran MalwareBytes first and it didn't find it ) I've been getting my updates and running scans on a regular basis and so far.... All clear... Rita P. S. I have my computer set to Alert me of MS updates but not to install them... The definitions for Security Essentials DO NOT show up in the regular MS security updates, you have to manually update them every day... Rita

Have you completely uninstalled the McAfee ? Sometimes even though expired, it continues to work, but just wont update. You can't run two virus protectors at the same time without some snafu's.

I went to look at Revo uninstaller but it does not say that it is supported for Win 98, that would have been a good way to go but I have no idea if it would work with 98.

Definitely turn the program off at the icon on the task bar and then I would suggest going into the start up menu and turning off any AVG related startup items listed there then reboot and then start the removal.
I would also use their specific removal tool.

I took mine to a shop and had it done on my laptop. Also had 'em install avast for me. The technician at the shop said he had a heck of a time getting AVG out of it. Cost me $65 and worth every penny for the peace of mind!

With any application regardless of its focus, there is a huge difference between removing it and totally removing it. Particularly if the application is configured into the O/S; the basic indicator being a reboot after installing or uninstalling.

Most legitimate applications do a pretty good job of removing files and entries with their uninstallers. And perhaps REVO type uninstallers might do a better job. However, even the best sometimes leave non-critical, non-offending orphan files and registry entries. The only way to remove them is manually.

Thanks everyone, Looks like I have a big job ahead of me.

Seems like the AVG remover utility would give me more files and entries to deal with.

I have Revo installed on my XP not looking forward to removing AVG. What's your opinions on PC Decrapifier.

AVG uninstall failed this is the error I got:

In safe mode I tried:

Add/remove, AVG's uninstaller, program files uninstaller, msconfig> start up and unchecked avg. Received the same error with all of these.

You have a mess there now, I want you to reinstall avg 7.5, do you need a link?

1. Download & save the latest AVG Free installation package

2. Run the AVG Free install file.

3. Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.

4. Restart your computer.

Basically what were trying to do here is to reinstall the uninstaller that comes with the avg 7.5

Double check your AVG Version, right click on the avg Icon by the clock and open the Avg interface, click "about AVG and look at the entire version # "7.5 xxx" where xxx is either 428, 430, 432, or 441 then make the selection in the link I gave you above.

Ok. It's getting late here and I will be gone for 2 days. I will get back with results.

Just one thing I must add> After all the things I tried AVG is still running fine and showed no ill effects after trying to remove it?

That's fine I think the uninstaller that comes with avg is bad, and the only fix is is to reinstall AVG and then use the avg uninstaller to finally remove it. I'm not saying this will work but it's the logical next step.

Did you disable AVG before trying to uninstall it? If not, sometimes uninstalling a running application will fail?

I have even had to go into the Startup and disable the entries there before uninstalling.

Yep, I had 7.5.549 so that link (AVG 7.5) you gave me would not work. Going into avg folder and running the setup.exe gave me the same error I posted above. And the same in safe mode. My avg rescue floopy must have been corrupted - nothing on it.

I had to go into the registry and delete avg. Then I ran RegCleaner 4.3 and delete what it found. And the same for find and folders.

I reinstalled Avg 7.5 and got the same error trying to uninstall. Nothing worked. Removed it per registry again.

When I bootup I get a screen asking for:
C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\AVG7CORE.VXD
C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\AVG7RS.VXD
C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\AVGTDI.VXD

These avg enties above I got both times after registry clean up. I hit any key to get out of the screen and windows bootsup.

Now all you need to do is edit the Windows Registry to remove those three entries.
Before you do that, you need to insure that you have a good backup registry. To backup the registry go to start, run, type in "scanregw" without the quotes, click OK. It should scan the registry, and then ask you if you want to make a backup, click yes.
To edit the Windows Registry go to start, run, type in "regedit" without the quotes. Click OK. When regedit opens, hitting ctrl+F should bring up a find window. In this window, type in AVGCORE.VXD and click find. Once found, right-click the key and select delete. Repeat for the other two Virtual Device Drivers (VXD's).
All of the above VXD's should be located somewhere in the registry key named:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD
Once complete, shutdown and restart windows and I think you will find that the problem has disappeared.

Terry, That did it! :-)

"Find" would not bring them up. I click the VXD folder and deleted them. I have empty folders when I click VXD - for Avg7Core, Avg7Rs, AvgTdi and AvgGuard all are empty. Should I delete the empty folders? Or leave them.

I have avast ready and want to make sure I got all avg entries before downloading.

Can you tell me what AFVXD is?

I don't think the empty folders would hurt anything, leave them or delete them, your choice.
AFVXD.VXD has something to do with your internet connection and supports the Windows Sockets (Winsock)
