Avast and AVG 9 issues with browser speed... help.

Hi,

Using MS XP IE7 (I never use), FF 3.5.5 and current Chrome.

**I never had a problem....until**

I uninstalled AVG 8, downloaded and installed current AVG 9 version. Perfect during the process. THEN all 3 browsers were super slow. Uninstalled AVG 9 and browser is SUPER FAST. Now, of course I can't be unprotected so I downloaded and installed AVAST Ver. 4.8 Home Ed. 091127-1 Also came with it a seprerate blue ball that has a i and is VRDB. Do I need that?

When AVG 9 was installed and I tried to surf the internet the CPU showed no activity.

There was some type of msg that Avast and Zone Alarm were incapable and followed the directions to set up browser to work with WebShield transpracy turned off. When i did that I couldn't go anywhere! So undid that and now when the grandkids want to play their games. I have to disable Avast or their games won't load.

What other good (not a hog) anti-virus is out there. OR what can I do to resolve issue. Cable came out and ran tests, my signals are perfect with the cable company.

Please help. I don't want to be unprotected ever, but need to be able to go from website to website without waiting forever or not getting there at all. Thanks.

this is all info for AVAST the I ball that is beside the blue A ball you want to right click that and tell it to join the A ball, can not remember the terminology but it will just make one ball, you can also drag it onto the A ball to do that.

You will need to change the proxy settings in your IE browser so that your web shield is working properly.

If you bring up Avast screen with a regular left click then click details it will open up so you can see the various aspects, it should be set to High sensitivity then if you scroll down on the left to the web shield if you see no activiity and zero counted then you know you have to set up that proxy as instructed in my link, if you do not that part is not working and you want that to work. Following the directions is very very easy I have had to do it on all of mine.

I just separated my "I" (VRBD) icon from the "A" icon on my Avast in my system tray (taskbar), and rejoined them. The correct terminology is "merge with main avast! icon". Just click on that and they will merge as one. I tried to drag & drop the balls together...Didn't work for me.

Hi breenthumb, I still use AVG, I have for years and I like it. I did run into an issue in late November in which I was continually asked to reboot. I posted on the AVG Forum and received the following fix from Big Al 43:(and it did work although I was not wild about the tone of the forum) "Restarting.... First check in the Advanced settings... Tools-> Advanced Settings-> Update in the 'When to update files' settings... it should be set to 'Update immediately' & 'Require confirmation from the user'... Now this should solve your restart issue.... Problem is most probably in failure of file replacing on Windows restart. Look into folder where AVG is installed whether file "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" exists. If yes, then delete existing file "updatecomps.cfg" and rename "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" to "updatecomps.cfg". Azinoh "Maybe we had different download sites?" That's possible. I downloaded directly from www.avast.com. If you did not, who knows what you actually downloaded. Could possibly have something to do with your very slow download also. ========================== Sunday 04-13: My version is 2014.9.0.2013 and now there is a new; 2014.9.0.2016. Well updating from the interface update just didn't seem to go so I went to the Avast.com site to download the dot.exe file. Clicking on download takes you to CNET. I now realize my original download was therefore thru CNET. So much for getting Avast from Avast. From Google it would seem cnet hasn't got the best of reputations any more in fact lots of complaints about extra programs foisted off on ya. Guess so. I went to File Hippo for the 84.55M file. Then googled that and there seems to be problems with the 2014.9.0.2016 version. So I'll skip it for now. Maybe let it age a bit. FH seems to have a good rep but most mssgs I found about them were several years old.

Here is a link to Firefox and pages not loading properly. One of the many possible problems cited may be the add-ons and plug-ins but suggest you take the steps from the top. In your statement of your problem: 1-Error includes the word "chrome" and if that is Google's Chrome you might consider taking care of Chrome at least temporarily. (I avoid using Chrome because I am somewhat paranoid when it comes to Google and accusations of misuse of its data collection.) As to slowness of browsers, you might also look to make sure you do not have too many programs loading when you boot your computer. Is it important that they be merged? Mine are separate, and I've had no problems. In fact, I'm quite thrilled with avast!

Avast works exactly the same with one ball or two.

I install Avast on old systems that dont have the genuine advantage checking installed. I don't dare install WGA on some, because I don't know why its not there.

On systems that have genuine advantage, they get Security Essentials. Equals zero headaches for me. Avast users always have questions or needs a tweak. Or just yesterday... I think I have a virus.. what's it do... The mouse moves around the screen all by itself clicking things. hehe
