I dumped Avira several years ago when they got involved in some monkey business with the ASK toolbar. Don't know if they still do that or not. It was a very good AV. Now using free Avast which...if you decide to use it...I suggest you get only from Avast at the link below and NOWHERE ELSE because you don't know what else you'll get bundled with it. Also suggest you do a CUSTOM INSTALL so you can opt-out of the things they suggest like Google Chrome (unless you want it). Avast has been working well for me but YMMV.

I don't know which is best but I like Avast. It is simple to use and I can see the animation in my notification bar working every time I start a game or open a new web page. It didn't stop a browser hacker when I went looking for a previous version of FF after an update, but it sure let me know it was there. It was so noisy I had to shut it off until I had the problem taken care of.

I've been using AVG and have never had any problems.

Azinoh. I removed MSE moving to Avira after MS declared their own product was less than successful, there was the option to remove the Ask toolbar during the install process. The offer to go pro pops up about twice a week in the lower right corner but I can cope with that, after all it is free.

Can't remember if that was the normal install or whether there was the option to use the custom install, I always use the custom to see what I might leave off.

I installed Avast for a friend and if I remember correctly there were about a dozen amazing offers I had to decline before the install process completed.

If you have a current Norton subscription on a machine that's no longer functioning, you can probably transfer the license to a different machine.

If that interests you, contact Norton (Symantec) to find out how to do that.

Reported in a recent issue of Consumer Reports and winter release by Virus Bulletin the free versions of AVG, Avira,and Avast are all pretty much near equal.
