how to obtain avast

Hi,

Since I am having so much trouble with AVG , which I now can't find after doing a system restore to the day I updated, I am thinking I'd like to try AVAST . How do I get this , and how do I install? Also, if I do install this, do I try and find AVG on my computer to uninstall , or just ignore ?

You always want to uninstall any anti-virus program if you decide to use another...see link below. As for Avast, all you need to do is go to their homepage:

If you can't find it anywhere, including the Control Panel, you may be ok...or there may be remnants still on your computer. If you want to be sure it's gone, you might want to reinstall AVG, and then uninstall it. Or, if that is too troubling to consider, just install Avast and keep your fingers crossed. Did you do a system restore to try to make AVG go away? Usually it's better to simply uninstall something directly.

Linda has given very good counsel. I would add that the quality & appropriateness of the auctioneer is critical to a true market sale. Don't choose a farm auctioneer to sell early American antiques! His "cult following" auction goers will NOT pay fair value. So, Linda' correct again when she advised to start learning what you have. Your profile doesn't say what part of the country you live in. That will also make a huge difference in price. My husband and I are decades long collectors of early American antiques (late 1600's to 1850). We live in New England. If you are located in the northeast, let me know & I can give you a couple places to visit where you can learn as much as the effort you're willing to put into it. Also, do your parents already have an insurance appraisal for a rider on their HO's? That would give you at least a basis of knowing what things generally are. Also, for Heaven's sake...talk to your parents now while you can. They are a good source of initial information. However, a word of caution...family "stories" about antique pieces are generally incorrect so don't rely on those. There's normally a piece of something accurate but not the whole picture. Things get confused down through generations. Ask your parents if they have receipts for purchases. The receipts should describe the item which will be a big help if you don't know what everything is. I have the receipt for EVERY antiqu we've ever purchased...including ones we've sold over the years. I keep those for reference purposes. You can also go to the library. There are many very useful books available. They will NOT give you value but you'll learn relativity to other similar items, styles, eras, prominant names/manufacturers, provenance of distinct styles, information on reproductions, etc. I would also advise to take your time on liquidation. If the collection is large & varied, you will probably do better liquidating through several different channels that specialize in the type items you have to sell. For example, do not try to sell Brilliant Cut Glass in New England. It's everywhere here & the price is always depressed compared to, say, the Denver market where it always seem to do well. Denver's a big Victorian market due to the Molly Brown thing. Have fun & enjoy the process. But, be careful! You just might find yourself getting "hooked". If you do, there's no going back!

Raven, the scan with F-Secure came up clean. Thanks, Mikie. I highlighted and deleted all the files that were from partition D. Then I highlighted the 4 files from C (all were dated May 2005)and clicked to restore. A pop up message said they were successfully restored, yet they still show up in the chest as infected files, even after a reboot. That I do not understand. I think I will send them to Alwil to be checked, since I am almost 100% sure they are not infected files. I followed the file path on each one and found them in the proper places, so I guess that means they were restored. Tomorrow I will run another scan with F-Secure, and if these files are, in fact, restored that should indicate if they are infected. I think I've tried to make a mountain from a molehill, but that's just the way I am, a stickler for details.

That would have been very scary if you used your real name and put it on a profile. When I first joined the Kitchen Table I used my real initials on my ID, my real name, birthday etc. in the profile if they had one and my main email account. I googled my ID once and my past KT posts came up on the internet. I have learned a lot since then, reading here, the newspapers and watching the news. Now I use an alias everywhere except if I am ordering something and they need my address for shipping. I am not of afraid of this kind of thing, but why make it easy for anyone who wants to rob or hurt you. Someone here in our city was robbed because she posted on a social network that she had to go to work and would be back at a certain time to visit again.

Note also that there are two versions of the home-free product, v4.8 and 5 which is relatively new. I have experienced issues with v5 in some installations. A free registration number will be required also.

Do I uninstall avg first and then install avast ? Or can I do the new installation of avast first , giving me protection in the meantime?

Having two antivirus programs installed on the computer at the same time can cause problems. It's unlikely anything bad will happen between the time you uninstall AVG and install Avast. If this brief breach in security makes you nervous, you can:
1) Download Avast
2) Close all your browser windows
3) Uninstall AVG
4) Install Avast

And, in any case, run a full scan with Avast immediately.

Be sure to update Avast before running the full scan. I have Avast version 5 and it has worked perfectly for me. The interface is much better than on the older version.

download Avast to your pc do NOT install it, then uninstall AVG use the removal tool specific for AVG, once it is fully gone then go to your Avast download and double click to install it. Once you have done that you will need to follow the directions to get your registration number and insert it into your AVAST.

Just wondering...have heard mixed opinions re Avast5 ...should I just wait until it's sorted and continue with 4.8?

And if/when I DO get 5, will it over-write 4.8 or should I uninstall it first?

I am still using 4.8 there is no big rush to go to 5 since 4.8 will be supported for quite some time, I personally like to wait a while and let them iron out all the bugs, let the ones that rush in find out all the problems, before I update.
There have been several significant bugs popping up that they are working on and fixing. Some may have no problem at all where as some might never know since every system is different. I posted about some of them on the AVAST5 thread here.
So that decision is totally up to you.
You can put 5 over 4.8 as part of it's install process it will remove the old version however many people prefer doing a removal first, you will get both answers on this one.

Just had an interesting experience. Using Opera 10 browser I was searching to see if there was such a thing as OE available for download that could be used on Windows 7. Using Google, I clicked on one topic on the right hand side (paid listings?)and immediately Avast popped up with a warning of a malicious site and closed the browser window. I am really thankful for a security program that will react that quickly to a threat.
