I also now use AVAST and love the fact that you can set up to scan anytime the screen saver comes on, which is how mine is set up, just go to the screensaver settings area and choose the avast screen saver then when the pc is not in use it will start to scan and stop when you move the mouse, it begins where it left off next time.
The Screen Saver Scan is in windows screen saver configuration list. Choose the one that says Avast Screen saver scan and then it will have some options.
I don't use a screen saver I blank the screen .. to save power. Animated screen savers actually use more wattage than non-animated ones, monitor uses no power when blanked other than minor amounts for warming a quick start feature.
Avast promotes itself as always on, demand protection and it pre screens all web and email traffic and opening programs so you should never have to scan unless you plug in a thumb drive or CD/DVD from somewhere with data on it from other than your own computer. Right ?
Would be nice if they had a schedule, but they don't & they don't make it simple to use task manager. You would think they would give you a simple instant scan shortcut. Is it that they don't like to make things simple and easy,,, or do they truly believe the simplest best protection is in their on demand virus checking. Certainly they shouldnt intentionally cause you to constantly waste power with screen savers to do a constant scan.
on the AVAST download page there are 2 pdf docs you can download or read, located on the left side of that page. One is a user manual that is a very good doc to save and read it gives you all the info on how to set it and options you can use and it includes all the instructions on how to set up the screen saver scanner. Also this link from bleeping computer tells you more info on how to set up scanning. How to Install, Configure, and Use Avast Antivirus
It is very easy as was stated you just go to your screen saver settings area on your pc and from the list select the Avast Screen Saver, you can choose options there also.
Just to take a seat on the other side of the aisle, I have been using AVG on my Vista since the day I purchased it, two years now. No concerns, no burps, no problems.
When the day comes, and it will, after a corrupt Avast download/update/upgrade, or if Avast goes to commmercial only users will migrate to the annointed AV of the day as if the sky was falling. They always do.
In fairness, I do use Avast on the Win98 system in the garage.
Either one will be fine for you. Just keep it upgraded to the current version and the definitions updated.
I use AVG, Avast and Anitvir separately on 3 computers and each does the job they are designed to do as far as I am concerned. Over many years, mostly with AVG, I have used all 3 plus perhaps a couple of others too.
Antivir throws up an annoying splash screen once a day but removing it is a simple click.
Is it worth uninstalling AVG to use Avast? Or would I be just as well off no to open a Pandora's box? If so, can someone point me to (really) specific instructions for the uninstall? Thanks!
if you are happy with AVG and it works well and agrees with your particular system then I would just leave it alone, you can always change at any time in the future should something change.
I like AVG the best. Tried Avast and I found it difficult and confusing. I installed it on my son's Vista laptop and it kept freezing and we couldn't set it to run on a schedule. I finally uninstalled it and put AVG on. No problems since. I find AVG very non-intrusive and it scans once a day. I do not use a screensaver. Black screen on all computers. I wouldn't want anything to scan each time my screen went blank. I like control over scanning.
Avast scans full time so no need to set up a time for a scan which is why they don't really have that option, the screen saver scan is just a simple way to do an added scan if you choose to it is not by default you have to set it to do that. Being the always on demand scanner it is, it scans everything as it happens, email, webpages, opening programs and docs etc, everything is scanned prior to opening, downloading, so doing any other scans is just a habit for most people who had other AV products that required those type scans. That is one of the reasons I prefer it. I do scan any thing I plug into my usb ports or from outside sources with a right click.
Yes I agree zep totally up to user preference and what works with that particular system.
