AVG 8.newest & Google question

I have an Acer PC with W/XP. I use Google as my search engine and Foxfire as my browser. I just upgraded to the newest AVG.

Now I've got all these symbols next to each website that Google lists when I search a topic, which apparently is the result of AVG pre-searching each site to make sure it's safe. Is there some way to tell it not to do that?

How to install AVG without LinkScanner

If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, or uninstall this component from your program, please proceed as follows:

* Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.
* Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:
o save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
o open menu Start -> Run
o type
c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
* The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component.

To add or remove some AVG Free components, such as e-mail scanner plugins, please proceed as follows:

* please download the latest AVG installation installation file from the Download section of our website
*
When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the Internet, but click the "Save" button and choose a location where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
* Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG...) and launch the installation by double-clicking on it.
* The installation process recognizes the existence of installed AVG and the Add/Remove Components option is offered.

Reinstalling and using the Add/Remove Components option is necessary for example in the case that there is a new supported e-mail client (MS Outlook/The Bat!) installed on the PC after the first installation of AVG Free.

And be sure you go to your browser add-on area
and disabled the AVG 8.0 Web toolbar and anything else related to AVG.

but it's been known for a long time by many that tomatoes left to fully ripen on the vine have the best flavor. Based on what? Sorry catman, it may be "known" it just can't be proven or supported by any research. Rather, once break occurs nothing further passes the stem membrane except water. Now clearly, since taste is a very subjective thing, some could argue their on the vine fruit tastes better but there is no way to prove it is anything other than personal taste buds. ;) The brix and carb tests show no changes between vine and counter ripened, only the enzematic and water content ratios. Plus, keep in mind that tomatoes ripen from the inside out. If you wait until the outside looks perfect to pick, the inside is already well over-ripe. But to each his own. Personally I'd rather eat the great counter-ripened tomato than leave it there for the splitting rain, crows, hornworms, and stink bugs to have. And we aren't talking about tomatoes picked 2 weeks early here. 48-72 hours between color break and yum eating is all on average. Does it hold true for cherry varieties? Yes, it's a tomato thing. But that doesn't mean you can pick the whole cluster if there is color blush on the oldest ones. Just pick the ones showing break. Do they need to be wrapped? Not at all. Some think it helps ripen green tomatoes in the fall but isn't needed for those that have started to turn. Believe it or not millions of wonderful tomatoes are kitchen counter ripened every year. ;) I'm not just making this up folks - research it for yourself. Lots of past discussions here on color break, stages of color break, tomato blush, etc. that a search will pull up and many of them include research links and articles you can review if you want. I downloaded v8 over the weekend and today was the first time I was able to tinker with it. I too chose not to allow the toolbar. As a representative of those of us who are still DUN users, I found that I could do a Google search and be to a desired link long before the little Vista eddy disappeared and an AVG generated icon appeared. The one truly undesirable issue that occurs when you disable the LS is the AVG icon located on the Notification Area sports a red alert with a white exclamation point. It is rather annoying. DA

It appears that it is gone. I used the Remover instructions you gave me RC on the Google home page and never saw AVG when I clicked on the the AVG toolbar options/advance. Nor did I see it in IE. The only option for search providers was Google listed as default/enabled/not available. I saw it in Firefox and removed it. I have only uploaded that program a few months back but never used it. I removed the Google toolbar on the culprit Google home page that was with the AVG toolbar and the AVG disappeared. Then I brought back Google. I rebooted and it is still gone and not listed as a program.I am holding my breath as it is a backward way of following the directions though I tried carefully to do that. grandms.Your thought about the company called "On call 25/8" has been running through my mind since they came out and created a pw to get into Windows last week. They had my computer a couple of months ago when I couldn't find a graphic device and did a thorough look. There was something wrong about the guys paying forward pitch that bothered me. For $750 I could get so many hours of future help in my home. He also would take care of installing my new router and Apple apps. There are other On Call 25/8 companies and wonder if anyone has heard of them. Raven thanks again for standing by as I made my way through these instructions. I hope this is the end. This afternoon I read all the online complaints about AVG - some going back 3 years. I have an external back up device that may have AVG on it now.Maybe I should throw it away My feeling is that computers are not here to stay. the new AVG 8 has some definite issues, they tried to combine programs into one program and that was their mistake. Plus they did not provide easy methods to not install parts that were not wanted, some of which cause slow downs and some that give false positives if you have programs like spybot and spywareblaster also on your pc. they did recently put out a fix update that is supposed to help some.
Many long time AVG users have left them and gone with other free ones like Avast and Avira.

Hopefully AVG will get it straight and get back on track with a good product.

Till then it is a good idea to use the directions for install which is on the AVG faq on how to install without link scanner etc.

I don't mind those links, actually appreciate them. I also haven't noticed any change in my computer regarding speed. I didn't install their toolbar, but like the fact that it scans silently in the background, doesn't announce every update and generally seems to function better than the older version.

I haven't had a glitch with it at all. Very nice, unintrusive tool.

AVG8 works fine here. I did disable the browser add in for scanning search links. Use yahoo here as the default search and they are already premarking search links with warnings.

I made a desktop shutdown link here for vista. Probably same for XP. Seldom shut down though, sleep works fine.

I have McAfee site advisor on all my windows machines and like it a lot, it pretty much does what needs to be done as far as letting me know which sites are good or bad.

Thanks, all, and especially Ravin...guess I'll have to live with it, that's too complicated for me.

Just a note to Jane--I'm on dial-up, so every extra slows things to a crawl. And I managed for years without it. I guess it's supposed to save you from "drive-by" attacks. Sigh.
