AVG 8.newest & Google question

I have an Acer PC with W/XP. I use Google as my search engine and Foxfire as my browser. I just upgraded to the newest AVG.

Now I've got all these symbols next to each website that Google lists when I search a topic, which apparently is the result of AVG pre-searching each site to make sure it's safe. Is there some way to tell it not to do that?

How to install AVG without LinkScanner

If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, or uninstall this component from your program, please proceed as follows:

* Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.
* Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:
o save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
o open menu Start -> Run
o type
c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
* The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component.

To add or remove some AVG Free components, such as e-mail scanner plugins, please proceed as follows:

* please download the latest AVG installation installation file from the Download section of our website
*
When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the Internet, but click the "Save" button and choose a location where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
* Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG...) and launch the installation by double-clicking on it.
* The installation process recognizes the existence of installed AVG and the Add/Remove Components option is offered.

Reinstalling and using the Add/Remove Components option is necessary for example in the case that there is a new supported e-mail client (MS Outlook/The Bat!) installed on the PC after the first installation of AVG Free.

And be sure you go to your browser add-on area
and disabled the AVG 8.0 Web toolbar and anything else related to AVG.

a very good free program you can use in addition to your antivirus to make sure you don't have any infections is malwarebytes, As Zep said I do not think this is from an infection, but it is always good to get malwarebytes, update it and run a full scan, do that once a week or so. Right click on the Zone Alarm icon on your tray. Open 'Restore Control Center.' Click on Program Control and 'Programs.' Look down the list with the check marks and question marks. Anywhere you see AVG mentioned, click on last box and then click 'allow.' You will see the question marks change to green checks. I allow everything with AVG. Jane

All you need to do is Run 1 Anti Virus program--Keep it updated. Run 1 firewall. Windows Defender is nice for spyware. Spyware blaster is a great addition to the computer it actually prevents malware all you need to do on this program is update once a week. Another must have is a program called Web of trust (WOT) Spybots immunization feature is also a way to prevent malware. Most important install all windows critical updates always from windows up date. And that goes for all programs keep them updated. There are aslo to cleaning programs you can run once a week 1 is called Ccleaner, and the other is Atf. And watch what you download your biggest protection is between your shoulders. And it's true no matter how much security you have you are still are at risk to infections, following the above guide lines will certainly reduce the risk...

the new AVG 8 has some definite issues, they tried to combine programs into one program and that was their mistake. Plus they did not provide easy methods to not install parts that were not wanted, some of which cause slow downs and some that give false positives if you have programs like spybot and spywareblaster also on your pc. they did recently put out a fix update that is supposed to help some.
Many long time AVG users have left them and gone with other free ones like Avast and Avira.

Hopefully AVG will get it straight and get back on track with a good product.

Till then it is a good idea to use the directions for install which is on the AVG faq on how to install without link scanner etc.

I don't mind those links, actually appreciate them. I also haven't noticed any change in my computer regarding speed. I didn't install their toolbar, but like the fact that it scans silently in the background, doesn't announce every update and generally seems to function better than the older version.

I haven't had a glitch with it at all. Very nice, unintrusive tool.

AVG8 works fine here. I did disable the browser add in for scanning search links. Use yahoo here as the default search and they are already premarking search links with warnings.

I made a desktop shutdown link here for vista. Probably same for XP. Seldom shut down though, sleep works fine.

I have McAfee site advisor on all my windows machines and like it a lot, it pretty much does what needs to be done as far as letting me know which sites are good or bad.

Thanks, all, and especially Ravin...guess I'll have to live with it, that's too complicated for me.

Just a note to Jane--I'm on dial-up, so every extra slows things to a crawl. And I managed for years without it. I guess it's supposed to save you from "drive-by" attacks. Sigh.
