Shower over tub? Or stand-up shower?

If it's over the tub, you'll trap the shower water pretty effectively. But if it's a stand-up shower, you'll get all sorts of leaks.

I would not do it. It will look cheap and not function well.

Get a nicer glass door that's smooth and a $10 squeegee. Squegee it off after each shower (about 15 seconds) and you'll have no water marks. You'll be replacing a shower curtain frequently anyway, since it will collect mildew.

Nothing wrong with a curtain, IMO, so long as you have enough light in the shower. Looks just fine open, can even provide a nice 'soft' element in a room where that's often lacking.

I recently replaced our glass doors (over a tub) because it was a PITA to clean the tub, leaning over and pressing into the bottom ridge and around the doors. I used one of those curved rods and curtain hangers that make it easy to remove curtain for washing. And I always used a squeegee to remove excess water from the shower walls.

I just renovated my 6' x6' master bath and added a 2x3' niche for the sink/vanity. I used white 2" tiles for the walls and went with a shower rod. I looked at the new doors and they were too modern for my house. Also, as I age, I want the safety of sitting on the edge of the tub and swinging my legs over... not something you can do with the doors in place. I have to say that the room looks sooo much larger with nothing in front of the tub. It has more of an illusion of depth and light.

We built our shower (Master Bath) with an opening sized for a standard glass door.

Before ordering the door, we thought we would do a 'test' and installed a tension rod and shower curtain.

We are very happy with it...we have other bathrooms with glass doors and they are a pain to keep clean.

If we ever sell, it will be easy for the buyers to install a glass door, if that's what they want.

If you hate cleaning the glass door then I'd say go with the curtain! Do what makes you happy!

On my tub/shower combinations, I've got curtains. We had 4 sons all close in age.... sometimes had 3 in the tub at once! So we didn't want glass doors.

We're remodeling our house and I'm sticking with the curtains in those bathrooms.... who knows there may be grandbabies coming to visit one day!

Interesting topic- I'm planning shower stalls in my 3 boys' bathrooms in our new construction, and I was thinking we would save a little money by doing curtains. Right now, the boys are 5, 2, and 9 months, so these showers won't be used for quite some time- they all shower in our bathroom now (5 year old alone, the other 2 with us), which will have 2 shower heads in the new house. I considered the likelihood that they would actually squeegee their shower doors every time they use them. But would the water splashing out be worse than the spotty glass?

i can speak to the splashing. i have a 42x42 shower and chose to use a curtain because of the expense, the cleaning issues with glass, and the flexibility that a curtain gives me in the future. i have a rain showerhead in the middle of the shower & a wall shower head / hand held on a wall next to the curtain. I mounted the curtain so that it falls just above the shower floor, so about 2 inches down inside the curb. i'm using a full width curtain since the stall sized one i found was too narrow. this one fits nicely around the edges, and i have had no problems with water getting outside the shower. of course, i'm not a child :) but i think the flexibility of a curtain would be high on my list for a child's bath.

I have tub shower combinations in the kids bathrooms so there was less splashing issue, but I had good luck teaching my guys to "stick down" the shower curtain along the edge of the wall after getting it closed. I've got great kids who can clean etc, but there is no way they would have squeegeed off a shower door every time (or even some of the time).... they would have always said so and so was going to be showering after me so I didn't need to do it. The curtains are easy to just toss in the machine with some bleach and detergent. When they are older add the doors.

Whoever came up with this notion that you have to do whats in vogue anyway? Baloney.

In my house we do things to fit our lifestyle and if anyone visiting the house is not satisfied there is nothing stopping them from doing an about face and rapidly moving their sorry snooty butts to the nearest exit.

In fact, probably most of the people who come to my house have made lists of things that we have which they would not care for but on the other hand, their is only one thing missing from my house that makes it truly different. We have no mortgage.
