Fiber Glass Entry Door, First Time for Sub

We purchased a mahogany wood grained fiber glass door for our new home. When I talked this week with the subcontractor who was hired by my contractor to paint and stain all the trim, doors,etc., I realized that he has never stained and finished a wood grain fiber glass door before. He believed that " with a brochure or a set of instructions" he would have no trouble finishing the door.I'm a little nervous about this. For those of you who have wood grained fiber glass doors, how forgiving is the stain and finishing process. Is it something that an experienced painter could handle even if he has never done this type of door before? Should I be out looking for another sub to do the door? Please advise.

We had a Masonite mahogany grained door and sidelight installed recently. It was a giant pain!! If you have a sidelight, I recommend looking closely (before staining) to ensure that the wood grain matches. Our painter had never stained a door like this before. It turned out that Masonite does not supply the stain to the dealers. As such, we had to experiment to find the right colour. The dealer recommended using a gel stain. It was a long and arduous process. In the end, because the stain didn't sink into the fiberglass evenly, we ended up going for a solid stain look. It looks good and we do get compliments, but in hindsight, I would have gone for a solid wood door (cost would have been lower in the end). Also, another warning: If you have a sidelight, the trim around the glass is a completely different texture that takes the stain completely differently. Upon looking closely, this part looks cheap. Another option that I would consider is to order the factory stained version of your door - more money, but fewer headaches.

Thanks Kellylp. This is exactly what I was afraid.The door is already installed so this is what we will have to work with. Wood really isn't an option for our climate anyway.I wish now I had ordered it prefinished.

We have sidelights too so that may be another issue.

If you could post a picture that would be great. For me this door is one of the most important features of the exterior. I really would hate to mess it up.

mdr944 - When I bring mine in - usually around Columbus day, I stick it by my balcony sliding glass doors where there is a plain floor-ceiling glass that is part of the door. In winter, I go no sunlight there (I face NE), but it is somewhat "bright". But more importantly, I have a table lamp with a 200W reading light near it, so it gets artificial light during the day. I reduce the watering a bit and cease fertilizing. It may have a bit of a shock and will yellow and drop some leaves but it recovers and will often give me a couple blooms in February or March. I understand that some people place them in a cool dark spot, but then since they are evergreen, that tends to really stress them and they will drop leaves, but will resprout later when brought into warmer brighter conditions. But when that happens, they are very late to bloom since they bloom on new growth. However if you can keep it near a bright reading lamp, then it can hang on through the winter and can bloom too! The main thing to look out for if you keep it in a bright or sunny warm spot inside, is to keep humidity around it. These can easily get spider mites if the air is too dry around the leaves, so either sitting it in a big pebble tray filled with water or using a humidifier (I keep a couple going in winter), will help. I was trying to see if I had a fuller picture of it from last year when it was outside but I did manage to find one not long after I brought it in when it was still blooming: From an older picture of it when it is outside when it is blooming, it looks like this (my hummingbirds like perching on it and will peck at the flowers too): Believe it or not, this was from Home Depot in a 2 gallon pot with 4 plants in it. It has slowly died back to two thick ones over the years, but I have actually never pruned it to shape (which I really really should do...LOL). I just prune off any dead or broken branches. It is in a 14" pot, which was about the biggest that I felt that I could lift (I have since potted a large coffee plant in a 16" pot, but that is a bit easier to lift since it is one central trunk that sits straight up).

Update on refrigerator crisis: we limped along with no freezer compartment for several weeks while I got a repair person out, and then a qualified subZ person out, and then a second opinion. I was almost ready to fix the darned thing, then the freon system in the fridge side developed a leak and at that point I was all in for a new one. After visiting a showroom to which you have to be buzzed in, I was giddy with all the new fridge features. Liked the glass door one but not as much as I thought--- I'd been prepared to love it--- but the interior is stainless and too dark for my 58 year old eyes, and the glass means you lose all the door storage, so that was a non starter. (I discovered that we cannot live without door storage in our refrigerator because we are condiment whores, with six types of mustard, three kinds of mayo, TEN salad dressings and how high can you count number of hot sauces.) Flirted briefly with the idea of using cabinetry panels on the new subzero, but afraid that would make the kitchen look like a snow palace, and/or that the colors would not match perfectly, with some of the paint being new and some seven years old. Salesman told me I could reuse our stainless panels and save about $650 so I was all over that, plus subzero offered me a loyal customer rebate on a new one of $550, so at least we did save about ten percent, and then the salesman said if we wrote a check for it we would get a 2% discount on both the fridge and installation charge, so overall we saved about 12.5 percent. For an appliance that never goes in sale, this is massive! Delivered today, they put the panels and handles on wrong (upside down, in fact) but graciously changed it when I pointed this out. We are going to have to do something about the floor (uneven wood abutting front bottom edge) but overall I am very satisfied with it. Great interior lighting, great storage, and the new interior drawers are clear perspex (or something similar) instead of white. Maybe now our potatoes will not sprout from neglect when put away in a fresh produce drawer....more likely we will simply watch them shrivel and die but on the bright side we will probably throw them away sooner :-) This post was edited by kswl on Fri, Nov 14, 14 at 6:41

Elizabeth, it will be okay. I'm a Realtor and have sold many foreclosures. It is more difficult when you are the buyer purchasing a property that hasn't been well maintained. Most foreclosures are the opposite of well maintained IME. But you can do this. Even if you make a misstep or two, it is easy to correct. The main thing is to have a plan. Are the systems of the house in working order? I mean things like roof, HVAC, electrical and plumbing? Is the floor serviceable for now? These are the important things on Day 1 of move in. The design part takes time and planning. Don't rush. That's where mistakes are made. When you are looking at a (presumably) vacant house, it shows smaller than when you actually begin to furnish it. It is best to live in the house first so you can see what works and what doesn't work from a planning perspective. I know it is more convenient to change things before you move in, but again, that is when errors are prone to happen. The best thing you can do as step one is to make any necessary repairs to the house, clean to the bone every surface and then move in and begin the planning stages to make this home your own.

I own a 1960s tract home in Southern California. One would think, based on its location, that I would have an abundance of light streaming in. I don't, though, because of the orientation of the house and the location of the rooms and windows. I agree with David and others that you've got to look for a plan that solves this issue first. Given that your front door faces south, it seems to me that your garage should be in the southwest corner. Then use the southeast corner for your main living area (e.g. your great room). The kitchen and dining areas could be in the northeast corner. I would move the bedrooms to the back (north) side of the house, and perhaps the master could be behind the garage in the northwest corner. It would be very secluded there. With Tamara's plan, while better than yours, the bedrooms are still clustered in the south and east sides of the house, and the main living spaces are all of the north side, where you're not going to get much light during the day.

As long as he's meticulous, should be no problem. I have a ThermaTru door, I stained it myself Labor Day last year using Zar oilbased stain (not gel), you pretty much have to paint it on and just *leave* it, don't wipe it off, just feather it out. Used Sikkens Cetol Door and Window satin over it. No new pics, but it's held up pretty well over the winter. The Zar does *not* touch up well (found out when I tried to pick some stray hairs out after it had dried) on the fiberglas so you really have to be careful.

This was an oak grain but I used mahogany color.
