changing grout colour - help! Bill?

x-posted in kitchen forum.... they told me to come her & look for Bill! :)

So, we picked a hideous colour for our grout. We were going for a beige neutral, and ended up with something very peachy.

Anyone have advice for how to fix this? I have been to the "thisoldgrout" website, and they have a colorant/sealer. Has anyone used this product? Does it work? Does it have longevity? Is it easy to use?

Yes, I've used it and it worked like a charm. Been down 2 years and looks great and still waterproof. My grout was sanded and you absolutely can't tell that there is colorant on there. I went from ivory to what "haystack" is supposed to look like.... more of a camel.
Just helped a neighbor go from an awful blue grey color ("Pewter" gone awry) to a darker gray.
Do a search and you'll find some other threads.
I know I sound like a plant for This Old Grout, but I'm a GW regular and just happy with the product.

This is great! I followed bethcw over here from Kitchens because I have a similar problem. Before I knew there was a GW to guide me, I allowed a GC to put a more than 1/4" white grout line in my rectified marble bathroom floor tile (as he was laying it, I said, do they have to be so far apart? He said yes.). It's always dirty, and I have to clean it with a toothbrush. Even clean, it's not white. If I clean it as well as I can and let it dry, can I then put this stuff on top and turn it grey (preferably dirt-colored grey)?

That would be wonderful!

As long as the original grout is less than 48 hours old, it should bond fine. Mongo gave you one valid argument for the blotchiness in the grout (the need to fully dry first). There is another, though, which WOULD be helped by skim coating the grout, and this problem is more prevalent with white grout, especially with white tile, than any other because of the contrast. What you may be seeing is the color of the sand in the grout. If it wasn't properly mixed to start with, he may have clumps that contain more sand than the rest of the grout, and as a result, it would show as dark spots in the grout, with a tannish tinge (which is what made me think of this).

I haven't used it, but have you thought about urethane grout? This grout is liked by many. It takes longer to cure before you use the shower. It is premixed and can be capped between uses. Maybe you can find out more about that option. I have had great success with Laticrete epoxy grout. I have mixed up only part of the material without problems. I just seal up the remainder tightly until I am ready to mix more and use. The liquid parts need to be 50:50. The part C colorant can be less precise, depending on how loss or stiff you want the material. The instructions talk about this.

I agree with his fix, although I'd be using siliconized latex caulk from the same company that made the grout. In fact, it shouldn't be "the fix". It should've been done that way in the first place. I would have him score out the rest of the grout in that joint around the shower and caulk the entire thing, because the rest of it WILL come out, sooner or later.

Did you post this in the kitchens forum, as well? I just answered another post over there very similar to this. Usually when sealer turns white, it's because there's still moisture in the grout. It needs to be completely dried before sealing, or you get this white haze on the top of the joint which is unbelieveably difficult to get rid of.

Usually, I have a link to purchase Aquamix Grout colorant on line. Unfortunately, I'm not on my computer, so I don't HAVE that link. That said, although I haven't used it my self, I'veheard alot of good things about the colorant from thisoldgrout.com.
