My brand new white grout is uneven. Help! Bill? Mongo?

Hi,

I just had 1.5" hex tile installed in my bath. The tiler used Bright White sanded grout. I saw the bag. The coloration of the grout doesn't look even. Some areas have a slight tannish tinge to them. At first I thought it just needed a good cleaning, but my contractor cleaned it, and it still looks uneven. I suspect the tiler mixed the grout in a dirty bucket. Is this possible? The contractor had to touch up some areas, and areas he grouted look great. Now the contractor wants to put a thin layer of properly mixed grout over the existing stuff. This makes me uncomfortable. Will the 2 layers bond together? I can imagine that it wouldn't take long before that new layer starts to crack and chip, and I think I'll have a mess on my hands. Any advice?

How old is the brand new grout?

How long after it was installed did they touch it up?

Often times you'll need to give it several days to fully dry. You have moisture behind the tile as well as moisture in the grout that could be contributing to the blotchyness.

If more grout does need to be added, it's better to do it sooner rather than later. But why? Was the the initial application and cleaning done improperly, leaving the joints not full?

Otherwise a topical grout colorant might be your best bet, Aquamix makes an excellent one.

As long as the original grout is less than 48 hours old, it should bond fine. Mongo gave you one valid argument for the blotchiness in the grout (the need to fully dry first). There is another, though, which WOULD be helped by skim coating the grout, and this problem is more prevalent with white grout, especially with white tile, than any other because of the contrast. What you may be seeing is the color of the sand in the grout. If it wasn't properly mixed to start with, he may have clumps that contain more sand than the rest of the grout, and as a result, it would show as dark spots in the grout, with a tannish tinge (which is what made me think of this).

There is a light there in the center of the shower because I knew it was going to be on the dark side, but I also have an exposed bulb chandelier that will be outside of it, and each vanity has an exposed light fixture as well. We also have a window in the bathroom that gets way too much light :) While the shower is really the "cave" it and the tub decks are the dark surfaces as well as the cabinets, but the walls are venetian plaster, in the same tone as the travertine. I'll finish that with a commercial wax application which gives a reflective sheen. The counter tops are pure white marble (or they will be if I can find pure white marble but that's another story). The ceiling is a soft white that matched the marble. Everything is on dimmers for either full light or dimmed...oh and the cabinets also have lightin in the glass uppers (chosen to break up the darkness). The door to the bathroom is a clear glass center (although it's stained glass with waves and ribs and ripples so you really can't see into it). Just outside the bathroom door there are two HUGE picture windows overlooking the lake that are full sunlight 24 hours a day sometimes ;) So hopefully my lighting plan will work. I put a great deal of thought into it when I decided to go so deep in tone on the shower. That's also why it's a half wall on the one side, to let in the light from the window and the room lighting. If I'd have walled it in with only the door glass, it would really have felt like a cave! The glass is custom made for the shower...it's a soft bronze which is obviously also a bit darker than normal, but I think...hope...heh heh it will all work. Oh and there is also a candelier (no electric) that hangs over the soaking tub :) I plan many a long evening with a glass of wine soaking in that thing (DS will probably be jumping in screaming SPLASH but in my fantasy it's very peaceful)

That is what I thought. Everything was going good until we mixed the thinset. We mixed the thinset as per the instruction on the thinset. I wish I had read the ditra instructions where it stated on bag can be used to cover 150-200 sq ft of ditra to subfloor and one bag to bond 50 sq ft of tile to the ditra. Obviously we mixed it too thick and then the thinset went on this as well. My wife did add more liquid as we were realizing that it was too thick. We are just going to go forward with installing the tile on the ditra. It looks good and I know that when I was applying the ditra the thinset was getting decent coverage. We did set 16 tiles on Sunday and I walked on them yesterday and they seem very well fixed in place. No movement at all. How level do the tiles need to be under the vanity? This is a 48 inch vanity with 4 legs. I know it would be best to make sure it is level. The subfloor was leveled out prior to installing with some shingles and tar paper but all is still not perfect and I am not the best at adding/removing thinset to make each tile level with the surrounding ones. It is coming out good but nothing is perfect. OH...if things crack...we were planning on renovating the kitchen in three years so we will redo the floor and vanity at that time. Hopefully it wont crack but not the end of the world...we are only talking about 50 sq ft of tile. Thanks, Steve

"The GC is telling me the cracking will soon stop (in other words, within the first year) -- is that more BS or is it true?" Maybe yes, maybe no. In lightweight frame construction, the framing lumber can take several months to a year to come to an equilibrium of sorts. During that time, the wood can move. Moreso if the framing lumber was green (not pressure treated green, but non kiln-dried green) instead of kiln dried. Still...houses move. There is still seasonal movement due to humidity, subtle movement from wind loading, etc, etc. So while grout in changes of plane is more likely to crack within months of the initial installation, it could crack year after year. Or after every other year. Or never again. There's just not a one answer fits all solution. Cracked grout in decorative tile is cosmetic cracking. But cracked grout in a wet area like a shower represents another avenue for liquid water and water vapor to get behind the tile. Normally not a problem with a topical membrane like Kerdi or RedGuard. But still, industry standard, and best building practices, dictate that with inside corners in wet areas, it's best to use color and texture matched caulk instead of grout. Caulk flexes. Grout doesn't. If their caulk is failing, then they need educate themselves on how to properly caulk, prep, application and tooling, and on using the proper caulk. Mongo

The cure-all fix for an oily stain is an acetone poultice. It is not difficult to do, but the longer a stain sets, the harder it gets to remove it. First thing you have to do is to remove the cause of the stain. No oily substance should remain close to the tile even. Once all the goop has been removed, do the following: Take some white paper towel (not printed - the ink might transfer) and soak it with acetone. Cover the stain with the paper towels. If you have a hole in the tile, stuff a wad of the acetone soaked paper towel in there too. Cover all the paper towel with some Saran wrap and tape down the edges with some blue painter's tape. This is to prevent the acetone from evaporating before it finished working. Leave the poultice overnight and remove the Saran wrap in the morning. Leave the paper towels to dry by themselves and then remove them. The stain should be lighter (if not gone) If you still have a stain, re-do the poultice. Depending on how long the stain has set, you might need to repeat the poultice thing a few times before the stain will go away completely. Reseal the tiles where you applied acetone - and DON"T let the plumber put oily stuff in there again! Hope that helped!

I say brand new, but actually the grout is about 2 weeks old, maybe 3 in some areas. Definitely older than 48 hours old. The touch-up was done just a couple of days ago. It is possible that it's the sand, that was my first impression when I first saw it. Is it still too late for the skim coat? I'll bet he didn't mix it well, and the darker areas are the grout coming from the bottom of the bucket, where the heavier sand particles may have settled. He definitely seemed like he was in a hurry.

It's way too late for a skimcoat. There's a very good chance that it'll peel within a few months. It might be time for colorant.

I hate the idea of putting a colorant onto a new floor. Isn't that something that you'd put onto a floor that has gotten dingy with age? Does it need to be painted on? I'm worried that the colorant will peel over time, or that the sloppy tiler will slop the colorant all over the porcelain tiles. I'd almost rather leave it, but I'm very unhappy and disappointed with the whole thing. It doesn't look new, and it doesn't look professional. For what I paid for it, it should look amazing.
