Final Decision Tonight- Miele or Advantium - quick question

All, thanks for reading. Making final calls on appliances TONIGHT for my new kitchen. I am going to do a Miele Chef Series wall oven and would like a speed oven to go with it. Can I get your opinion on:

- If I went with the Miele - have they addressed the inner surface cleaning issues recently? I know this has been a big problem for a lot of folks.

- I am leaning toward the Advantium. Does anyone have it paired with a Miele wall oven. How does it look?

after reading all thru the website - I take the Advantium is better as a MW and the Miele is better for baking. that leans me toward the Adv.

Finally - if I get one of these does anyone think I'll still need an extra warming drawer?

There may be similar cleaning issues with the Advantium.

The way a speed oven keeps warm, at least the Advantium, is with microwaves. That's only good for a short time, like half an hour. Okay for holding something that was finished too soon, but not good for keeping warm for stragglers without petrifying.

The Miele, from what I've read, also has a broiler, which the Advantium does not. The Advantium has the halogens, which I believe the Miele does not. Depending on which models you're looking at, one may have more useable interior space.

The Advantium is really excellent as a microwave alone, though setting it would be easier with a digital pad. If you want to start right away, touch Express for as many 30 second increments as you choose, or touch it once and turn the wheel to adjust. The wheel can turn really fast for longer times, and can set to an exact number of seconds. You can also start with Express, adjust the seconds, pause, then put your stuff in and start, if you want a very precise time. There are other ways to do this, but for 16 seconds and other short times, I find this easiest. I find the menus less useful, except for sensor things like popcorn and frozen vegetables (the sensor is great).

We have the Advantium and love it. We have the 240 V model and liked it over the Miele because of the interior size.

We do have Miele dishwasher and Induction cook top and like both of them especially for the quality of the build.

For us size mattered...

Yes, the Microwave and Speed Cook settings use microwaves but the convection cook setting just uses circulating hot air. In theory, you could also create a speed setting that only uses the halogen and convection, but not the microwaves, though you'd have to trial and error it to see if it's worth it. It might just get the outside done way too fast and leave the inside raw. Microwaves don't actually do anything to the food that's unhealthy unless you let it get overcooked--they just speed up the molecules--but to each his own. Just make sure that they don't revile a machine that has the potential to create microwaves before you buy. But if you just mean you want to be able to convection cook (hot air) only to avoid an argument, yes, there's no need to tell them that it's also a microwave.

We've had our Advantium 240 for a year, and we're pleased with it. It does have a microwave function, separate from the speed oven function--there are two sets of button controls. The microwave mode has programs of food cooking settings built in, an express button that will give you 30 seconds of High for every button push, or you can set time and amount of power manually. The oven comes with a white ceramic tray that sits on the turntable for microwave mode. For speed oven mode, you remove the white ceramic tray & either place food on either the smooth or "grill" metal tray provided or in a glass baking dish--the tray or the dish then go directly on the turntable. For a recipe, you then set the power level for the Upper halogen, Lower halogen, and Microwave, plus time. The Advantium comes with a recipe book that gives these settings. Some recipes include some microwave power & some don't. Or, you can press the automatic speed cook button, which lets you choose from a variety of preprogrammed options, which include most packaged frozen foods.

Jacobsfamily: Yes, the Bluestar oven works great for Jewish holidays. It is like the old-time pre-computer ovens, and indeed the Bluestar has no computer electronics. There is a light next to the oven temperature dial that glows when the oven is heating and turns off when it is not. You can raise the temperature when the light is on and lower it when the light is off. On yontefs we keep the oven on and also the simmer burner. Last Shavuos we kept the oven at about 200Â° just for reheating but we went through all our food so we also baked a chicken at 400Â°. We used the burner to cook fresh vegetables and to reheat soups and stews. A couple of things to be aware of : 1) The Bluestar doesn't have a Sabbath mode because it doesn't need one -- the misnamed "Sabbath mode" is a result of trying to deal with computer electronics that digitally control temperatures and turn ovens off after 12 hrs. 2) Because of the way the Bluestar is wired you need to have the burner(s) you plan to use already on before yontef begins unless you cut power off to the range (unplug it) -- but then, although you could turn on more burners by igniting them from a flame (without triggering the electronic ignition), you couldn't use the oven. My husband has toyed with the idea of having an electrician friend separate the wiring and make the burner circuit separate from the oven, but I'm fine using one burner and the oven... and it would almost certainly void the warranty. TeacherSuzanne: I do not have a grill. I do know that the Wolf grill works differently than the Bluestar. The Wolf is either on or off; the Bluestar has an adjustable temperature. Jpmom, you home is gorgeous already! The 12" crown will look perfect with the already tall baseboards. Then add all the other woodwork in, the fireplace mantle, wainscoting, and pillars in the dining room. So pretty! My first reaction was to continue the white painted woodwork. It seems naturally connected to that bar wall from the the LR and DR with the baseboards and wainscoting. Oh and I also love that transom window above the other doorway too! My other thought was that I know from experience how the backsplash tile can completely change colors due to the lighting and what is directly next to it. I would want the two areas in the kitchen with the backsplash to look related. It may look completely different with one being next a window with white cabs and dark counters verses the other being in low natural light with black cabs and white Quartz. I'd definitely wait to decide on what to do with the bar area until the rest of the kitchen is painted white as Romy suggested. I do think it might look great either way, but I'm just one who needs to see it in real life before committing. I am sure either way it is gonna be stunning! ETA.... Could you possibly find a remnant of the Volga blue to fit the bar top if you went with white cabs on the bar? Or possibly just cut the granite and add a dark walnut type wood butcherblock section that reads dark above the wine fridge? Think romy's dark wood top next to the granite? Just a thought....:-)

I like the Sharp AX-1200S supersteam oven. It's not built for speed, but it far outperforms my advantium in terms of food quality. I will say the Miele speed oven was designed for food quality first, and speed second.

But the Sharp unit steams, convection bakes, microwaves and combines steam and convection. It also has a steam keep warm feature that does not use microwaves.

If I'm cooking a potato or bagel bites I'll choose the advantium. If I'm cooking broccoli (or any veggy), fish (or any seafood), chicken (breasts or whole), bread or cookies, or reheating something that benefits from some added moisture (rice, pasta, steak, casserole), I choose the Sharp supersteam EVERY TIME. The extra time is far diminished when the quality of food comes out so well.

This is 550 degree super heated steam, not the 213 degree steam Miele, Thermador, Gaggenau, Viking, Kuppersbush, etc offer. Meaning that it will give you crispy skin on a roast or chicken in the combo steam/convection mode.

I think the Sharp with 30" trim kit would look really nice over the Miele.

I had narrowed down to the Advantium 240 and the Miele Chef Speed Oven. The Advantium 240 is not approved for under counter installation. That was a deal breaker. I like the Miele Chef as I am mostly interested in having an electric "second oven" to augment the gas oven on the Blue Star Range.

My problem with the Sharp SuperSteam was its very weak microwave (~700w) -- if they hadn't cheaped-out on that function I might well have gotten it.

I think the Advantium gets too hot to be at a lower (under counter) height, where little ones could conceivably burn their fingers badly in it -- that's mostly a lawyer thing.

Oh boy, the plot thickens.. Thanks for the responses so far. I had pretty much decided on the Advantium 220, and my designer called to say they actually had a Chef series in the warehouse that was purchased for another customer, bit wrong model and couldn't be returned and do I want it for a 10% discount. Argh.. This really makes me torn. I like the looks of the miele much more.. But I don't want hassles keeping it clean.

Can anyone who has the miele comment, how bad is it?

And any Advantium owners... Is the clean up easy?

Cleaning the Miele is not as bad and not as many people have the issue as you think.

Is it easy - NO, but then I don;t think cleaning any micro is really. What some have an issue with is that the Mieles have a dimpled stainless interior that can collect gunk and that particular finish is exclusive to miele. But, it tends to have less seams / joints than others with smooth skin, so it becomes a trade off. Gunk in the dimples or gunk in the seams. Frankly, it's so small and the window obscure and small as to not really show off the interior except when open. I don't find it a deal at all - but that's me and I'm not obsessive compulsive, or a neat freak.

Ever try leaving a bowl of ammonia inside a microwave or oven overnight? I hear that this is effective at making food remnant easy to wipe off. I just bought a bottle and will try tomorrow if I remember. I have a SS interior Advantium and Bosch Convection OTR that are both in need of cleaning. Maybe this would work on the Miele too?

I don't know if you've already made your decision, but I like my 240V Advantium. It can function as an MW, convection MW, or standard oven using halogen lighting. Wouldn't use it as a daily oven, but it works fine as a 2nd oven. I haven't had cleaning issues with it.
