36', 6 burner dual fuel ranges

Hi

I need to make my final decision for my kitchen remodal now and am very confused about which 36" 6-burner dual fuel range to purchase. I've been looking at Dacor, Wolf, Viking Thermador, DCS. Thought I'd decided on the Dacor but I've been hearing that people have been having so much trouble with the ovens. Which one do you think is the best? How long have you been using your particular range? I want the gas stove top to be able to simmer well and the oven to just keep its heat correctly and to bake and broil well. Thoughts?

I struggled with this for quite some time...one of the toughest decisions in the whole process for us.

We ended up with the Fratelli Onofri Evolution.
It's 36", dual fuel, 5 Burner, convection.

And it's considerably less than the brands you mentioned.
Other than cost, other factors were neighbors that are currently on their THIRD Thermidor in 4yrs, numberous reports of TERRIBLE customer service from Viking and Wolf, both.

After reading countless threads, going to appliance stores and researching online, we're buying a Wolf 36." If money is an issue there are less expensive alternatives, but I'm splurging on this range. It has the right "feel" to it - it's important to go and see various options - open the range door, play with the burners, watch cooking demonstrations. I figured if we were going to shell out $8,000 on a range,we'd better do our homework and research the heck out of it.

I have the 36" Wolf Dual Fuel / 6 Burner LP, Electric oven and could not be happier with it. We have had it for 3 years with 0 Zero problems. I LOVE the oven. It is truly a beast! One Thanksgiving I cooked 2 20Lbs. Turkeys at the same time and it only took ~ 2 hours with convection and the internal temp probe. Unbelievable, but true. They were the most juicy Turkeys I have ever cooked, and the next day the self-cleaning function worked perfectly. We have the sealed gas burners, and I would not have it any other way after cooking / cleaning the stove for a while. I am experienced with the open burners as I was a prep-chef for a French Restaurant in an earlier life. The look of closed top burners is IMO so much nicer, very clean and upscale instead of 100% Commercial look like the open top burners. It cleans up easily and looks like new after each use. Cookies come out perfect, my wife is the baker in the family and has cooked several >6 Wedding cakes (yes multi-layered)and Loves the oven too. Does it show that we Love our Wolf? I hope so. When we move we will leave it with the house, and purchase a new one for our next home. Same 36" DF, it does take a while for the oven to come up to heat, but it's worth the wait. Ron

There isn't juice available for a convection top range? Did you maybe mean induction? And are you thinking of a separate induction cooktop and a separate convection oven? Those, indeed, will often require 60 amp or 70 amp 240v service which may not be readily avaiable in older homes. If you parents would consider an induction range (as pposed to separate cooktop and oven), then the power needs are considerably more modest. Most of the less expensive induction ranges only require 40amp service and the prices are well south of $2k ($$US or $CA). I'm thinking in particular of the Samsung and Frigidaire/Kenmore ranges (sub $1500 price range.) If your parents specifically want a dual fuel 30" range with open burners, then what I recall from stove shopping last fall is that only Five Star and Capital (in their Culinarian and Conoisseurian models) still offer 30" dual fuel with open burners in North America. I searched on aj madison on the kitchenaid and it was $5019 and i found i got better prices with my local appliance dealer for my appliances. You might shop around more on the kitchenaid. The wolf you will have a harder time shopping it around as it is set pricing. On splattering we use an old fashioned splatter guard and that works great to reduce cleanup. You pay extra for wolf for the reputation, cache, and service. It might be worth it on resale. On aj madison websiteyou can do a comparison of the specs on each and see the differences.

Need a hood for a 36' dual fuel Bertazzoni range

Dear Melfy, A 36", 600 cfm hood over your 36" Berta range will be fine with the amount of heat your Berta puts out. As far as I can tell on the web, Bertazonni hoods come with internal blowers (this is the most typical form of blower and it is what I have). When I got a hood last Fall I looked at Berta hoods. I loved the look -- a lot of style, as you would expect for such a fine looking range! In the end I didn't get a Bertazoni vent hood because I couldn't find one that was 24 inches deep (they all seem to be 20 inches deep) with 8" ducting. That said, I have several friends with 20" deep vent hoods with 6" ducting over their pro-style ranges and they report that they are satisfied with the noise level and capture. I'll let other Berta owners weigh in, but I'm wondering if because of the near counter depth and sleek styling of the Berta the shallower, 20 inch hood works fine? Increasing the size of the vent from 20 inches deep to 24 inches deep and 6" to 8" ducting is going to put you into a considerably higher price range. If you don't do a lot of pan searing and other grease and smoke producing cooking on your range, the Berta hood may be fine for you. (Personally, I think my vent is a bit overkill. But I do love having the capture area for those 3 to 4 times a month when I cook meat.)

Look at GE Monogram, they are very high quality, well-finished, and their service record is well-regarded. And you'll save at least $1000 over wolf, thermador or viking.

Cookin jim how do you like your Evolution. Have the relativly low BTU output (compared to Pro styl) been an issue. How does the oven perform? They sure look like a great bang for the buck range.

djh...I wish I could answer your questions...but it's not hooked up yet!...so I really don't know.

We thought about the fact that the center burner is 12,000 BTU compared to the 15-17,000 we saw on the other "pro-styles", but since we've been cooking with Halogen for the past 15yrs, after talking with other folks, we felt it wouldn't be an issue.

I'll know more next week :)

There other ranges are beautiful as well, and if we were doing a more classic/country kitchen, we would have done one of the other models with an enameled finish in a second.
