Wider vanity or wider shower for master bath?

We have a width of 91 inches for a vanity and a shower with frameless glass door. My contractor recommended a 5.5 inches wide curb and the vanity we like comes in 48 inches or 40 inches.

If we go with 48 inch vanity, we will have roughly 36 inch space inside the curb. If we go with a 40 inch vanity, we can have a much roomier shower and have more than 2 inches between the glass door and the vanity. The other dimension of the shower is 55 inches. We just can't decide which way to go and we do need to order the vanity pretty soon. What would you do? The bathroom is used just by me and my spouse. Thanks.

Depends on which is more important to you -- vanity space/shower space. For me -- with either vanity size, you are only going to have one sink, and one person using it at a time? 40 inches seems big enough in that scenario, so I'd take the extra room in the shower -- I like a roomy shower.

We are definitely going with just 1 sink. We had a double sink in our old master and we always used the same sink for whatever reason. The wider vanity will give us more counter space and storage but even the 40 inch will give us more than enough storage.

If you have 36" available, I don't see why a larger tub would be difficult. You have the space available. Corner bath tubs take a lot of space, so I don't know what your length is you didn't say. Our tub is 42" wide which we went from a 36" and I don't think there was much difference. The drain had to be moved, but it didn't cost us much to do that. Most any bath tub you put in you will have to move the drain, unless you adding the exact size again. We bought our bath tub online and we saved a lot of money. The link is below. Like your idea to see if the bases can be used for another fixture. I am definitely looking for something with a bigger shade. I've been to the big box stores and no luck with what was in stock. There is one possibility at Lowe's that is out of stock and he suggested I come back by Tuesday. I spent a few hours on lowes and HD online and they don't have very good search capabilities for sizing items. I've noticed this before and the Lowes' electrical guy told me that he was always fighting with their website too. I realize this is a long shot asking here. To answer your question about my remodeling.... I was trying to keep my remodeling story short, but maybe it was too short. I'd like to replace these lights if we can but we're kinda on remodeling exhaustion. In a 2+ year process, we've remodeled the kitchen and the front bath, both gut jobs and much of it was diy. In the past I was a frequent poster here. With the MBath, about 7 years ago I had hired the shower to be retiled because the grout was failing and we felt that we probably needed new cement board etc. We had put down new vinyl flooring and painted, but never did the vanity area, still very dated. So I'd like to not rip into anything else and if I can't find new lights, then we'll live with these.

See the plans below for our master bath. I have a few questions... 1.) We are planning a walk-in shower where the entry will be on the short wall and the showerhead being on the long wall, and then a bench on the other short wall. We were originally thinking of a 42x60 shower area, but due to size constraints, we are considering 36x60. I would feel OK with this width if the showerhead were on the 36" wall, but since it will be on the 60" wall, I worry about having enough room to back up from the showerhead if needed. I could put the showerhead on the short wall opposite the entry, but that means we would have to find a different spot for the bench, which I'm not sure I will like. Any thoughts? 2.) Also, any thoughts on which wall would be best for the showerhead, the front or back wall? I would like to plan the shower without a door, and I can't decide which wall will lessen the splashing the best. It depends on if there is more splashing off the body back towards the showerhead wall, or if there is more splashing off the body and onto the back wall. 3.) Finally, if it were you, would you keep the shower at 42x60 and move the distance from the vanity to the wall to 42", or would you squeeze the shower down to 36x60 which allows us to have 48" between the vanity and back wall?

I"m short on time, but wanted to post something that's been swirling in my brain. I think walk in closets are lovely if you have the space, but I just don't think you have the space; I'm pretty confident that the minimum recommended width of a closet is 5'. How about a walk- through closet to your bathroom? My guesstimate is that you could have 6' wide, reach in closets on either side of a 42" hallway. I've seen lots of pictures with a beautiful tub centered under a window and flanked by vanities, so I appreciate that look might be a priority to you. I just moved all that over to the other window. I tucked the toilet and shower around the corner. Depending on the location of the window, you might be able to have a pocket door, but if not, a wall would add a lot of privacy (avoid seeing the reflection of someone on the toilet from the entrance or the rest of the bathroom.) Anyhoo. Here's a rough drawing. If aging in place is a concern, I'd put the shower and toilet on the exterior or bedroom wall, so you have the option of creating a quicker route to the toilet (through the closet wall) in the future.

I would prefer the increased shower space myself, but it depends how you use the bathroom. Do you frequently get ready at the same time, using the mirror and vanity side by side, with lots of product all over? If not, 40" should be fine. If so, extra counter space may be more important.

We don't often get ready at the same time but we are not planning on having a medicine cabinet so I can imagine having the tissue box, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap on the counter at all times.

if a 40" vanity is more than enough storage for you, then extra room in the shower would be nice... i would want more storage too...

can you order a 30" vanity and a 15" bank of drawers... that would give you a couple more inches on both the vanity and shower....

I'd go with the 40" vanity and the bigger shower with a little more space in between.

With that smaller vanity, you might want to reconsider the medicine cabinet. I just decided to put a medicine cabinet back into my bath remodel. I realized I would prefer to have a place for the toothbrushes and other bits that tend to stay on the counter all the time. I haven't had a medicine cabinet in so long, I forgot how useful they are, and these days there are lots of great options. I thought about getting the Pottery Barn vintage recessed cabinet, but decided on a Robern to get an outlet in there too. That way the toothbrushes and shavers can charge out of sight.

Hmm so the consensus seems to be a bigger shower and a 40 inch vanity. How big should my shower be then? It can go as large as 51 inch from wall to outside of a 5.5 inch curb but I think that would be way too big. Maybe 45 inches from wall to outside of 5.5 inch curb? That will give me roughly 42 inches from the wall to the frameless glass door. 42x55 seems like a really good size.
