I need all the help I can get
Comments (15)Hi Mark, we're also in PSL - near Airoso & St. James. I don't do veggies but I do have one idea for you. My husband and I used to own a Greenhouse/Nursery/Florist back in the late 80s and we found an amazing product called SuperThrive. It used to be hard to find but I saw it at Lowe's and Walmart recently. The product was developed to help increase the harvest for vegetables (or any plants maybe?) but we discovered that it is incredible at completely eliminating the shock of transplanting. Just a few drops in a gallon of water. We discovered this quite by accident. We used to rent out our ficus trees for weddings. You may know that if you just look at a potted ficus tree wrong, it will drop all its leaves, just moving it from one corner of a room to another would throw it into hysterics. You can imagine how ours felt being thrown into a van to travel to a wedding and back again the same day! We used to have to rotate trees so that the traumatized ones could re-grow their leaves between weddings. One day my husband thought to use the SuperThrive on a group of trees just before they headed into the van and they didn't lose their leaves at all! Since then, we've used it for everything. I think it might have prevented the leaf-drop in your banana trees. I hope this helps your garden this fall/winter! I'm going to try out your pepper idea to see if I can discourage some of our many rabbits - our greyhounds are quite entertained by the rabbits who seem to virtually live in our back garden. They sometimes come right up to the door and peek in at the dogs. It's fun until you realize they've eaten every single viola seedling and half your impatiens!! Urggg. I'm trying again (with chicken wire) this fall. By the way, I followed the link to your FB album and "friend requested" you. Your work looks quite professional so far! Great photos. I'm looking forward to following your progress as you grow food and teach your children. Good for you! (By your spelling, I am guessing you're from the UK. Did I guess right?) Comments (10)Isn't 13 gal the standard kitchen bag size? That's what I use, and my trash can measures about 10 x 14 on top and 17" high. My garbage bin came with the pull out, and the pullout works like you say - there is a shallow base that holds the bin, as well as metal bars halfway up to keep the bin steady. I have empty space behind mine where I keep the garbage bags, among other things. I think it might be rev-a-shelf, that's what I think my cabmaker uses. But I don't think a 13 gal bag will go in anything much bigger, not 20" deep anyway. Are you thinking of the 30 gal trash bags?...See MoreWhere can I get good quality, reasonably priced cabinet pulls?
Comments (18)Or you could try to connect with remodelers. In areas where they remodel perfectly fine kitchens to embrace the owner's version of a dream room, or simply the switching out of hardware due to finish changes, the old stuff is still in great condition. I know we bought some temporary value-pack pulls to replace the hideous knobs in the kitchen when we purchased the house. Now I am staining the cabinets and changing the pulls to ones with a different finish. So there will be a box of pulls that are only a few years old sitting in a box in the garage, or waiting for a garage sale. I cannot be the only one....See MoreHow quickly can I lower pH of soil in order to plant acidic plants?
Comments (13)See if you can find Soil & Water dudes to talk to instead of Cooperative Extension. How old is the construction? If it is more than 5 years old, then alkaline leaching has already occurred, and you've got what you've got. My personal experience, living in a lime pocket among an assortment of lime pockets, is that most gardeners have been quite thoroughly brainwashed into thinking anything in the east has to be acidic. It just isn't so. So when confronted with an alternate reality, they come up with excuses. Concrete leaching is a classic. Older concrete doesn't leach, and the leaching doesn't travel much. I don't know how many times I've been told that I should stop liming, and then I will have 'normal' acidic soil. If you want to know how the neighbor grows camellias, go over and ask. And no, my soil doesn't fizz either, and my pH, and calcium numbers are very similar to yours....See Moreflicka001
