Nancy, she had a beard and mustache that was a mix of lavender and teal. She had watched a bit while I made the cake and my DH gave her a little crumb of the cake saying "cake." She can already say cat so cake wasn't much of a stretch and she came to him asking "cake". She knew what cake was - but at the party she didn't recognize it all covered with frosting. We gave her the top block. At first she was very tentative but once she had gotten a taste of the frosting she got more into it and then when she found the chocolate cake inside she dug in. We had the party at the park so afterwards she was taken to the water spigot and rinsed off. She was reasonably tidy with it - just her hands and face. There was no question who was the cake decorator at the party with a purple and teal thumb. That paste food color can be persistent. I still have a spot of teal that has bonded with my thumbnail.

I've read it is not good for cheesecake but I don't make cheesecake anyway. I have seen recipes for cheesecake using it in Cooking Light magazine, but I dunno if the recipes are any good. Probably not good in danish and the like either. I use it mostly to spread on bagels and toast and english muffins, in which case it tastes just fine. I top it with a dab of homeade jam, yum. Great with lox, since that has a strong taste so I don't miss the extra taste for that application. Fine with those dream eggs, because they were flavored with the herbs anyway, and the neufatchel just added a wonderful creamy texture, even with 1/3 less fat. Since cream cheese is almost pure fat, 1/3 less doesn't make it a diet food by any means, but I like it just as well if not better than cream cheese for what I use it for, so that's what I buy for the calorie savings. I don't mind it in party spreads either. Note: I made a double batch and baked it in a round cake pan with a "releaser" bar that spins around the bottom to prevent sticking. I just dumped it out and spread the jelly on the bottom, no one notices because it’s covered with jelly!! But, my little grandson (a month away from 3 yrs. old) and I did get started on Nate's carrot cake cookies, but since we didn't finish making the dough until an hour before his bed time, and the dough has to chill at least an hour, it'll be tomorrow before we bake them and do the cream cheese part. It doesn't matter. Both DGS and I had a great time mixing up the batter. He got to taste the flour, the sugar, the butter, and all the other ingredients as they went into the mix. Plllog, it's interesting what you said about chocolate covered strawberries. I like both chocolate and strawberries very much but together I'm not crazy about them. I've never given it much thought because it's just not something I come across to eat very often. Your comments of why you don't like them are relatable, and I could similarly imagine it being good in the form of ice cream. I'm showing signs of finally getting a handle on what has been an eight year sugar binge, so I can almost say I hope not to be trying new ice cream any time soon. Almost. Coincidentally the other day I was looking through my saved sites on my phone and stumbled upon a blog page about oyster ice cream. Likely it came up in conversation here at some point. The gag reflex is real when thinking about it, but the ingredients list is a natural fit so it's just a matter of imagining it frozen. They make the case that the concept - though not the actual recipe - has an early tradition in this country, so just maybe I'll make these for the annual Fourth of July party and see what happens.
