First Birthday cake

My camera and kitchen were busy this weekend. In addition to making challah and a dessert for the dessert party, we had my granddaughter's first birthday party.

Here is the cake I made for that. It was chocolate with cream cheese frosting. Not my tidiest decorating job since I got in a time crunch (had to help a relative with their income forms) and doing the blocks turned out to be more work and take more frosting than I expected. Everything had to be crumb coated, popped into the freezer and then iced again. Getting cake sides neatly frosted takes me more time than tops and this had a lot of side.

But I think only I and my son the critic (who helped with finishing the decorating) noticed the imperfections. DGD certainly didn't. The blocks had her name on top, something I'm not comfortable sharing on the web so I did some touch-up on the photo to remove it. The cake was cuter with letters on top of the blocks.
