New exterior sketch combining last two front elevation renderings

This is a sketch from our architect combing the features from the last two drawings for the front elevation. I'm liking this one except for some space between the right of the entry and the garage. The original had windows there but we have shrunk the size somewhat so it doesn't fit what was originally there. He put a window in that space in the second floor but one won't fit on the first floor. I'm thinking I could put a trellis there and plant a vine. Any input on this new drawing is greatly appreciated

Olivesmom, you are fighting an uphill struggle. The small North Carolina house is appealing due to its simple, iconic "house" shapes and other simple, straightforward residential design motif. Due to this simplicity of shape, it can have a variety of exterior materials and finishes (including the great red windows with green trim on one side and the equally great green windows with red trim on the other side). In other words, the design of the house is quite simple, which allows some creative diversity in materials and finishes. On the other hand, the builder's houses that you have posted are very complex and competing shapes and forms, and they are very large, further complicating the idea of unity and harmony. When these complex and competing shapes are combined with a variety of materials and finishes (as they almost always seem to be on stock plans and builder's tracts), the final result is anything but simple, unified and harmonious. These large, complex and competing shapes almost always require a very simple and consistent use of chapes, materials and finishes if unity and harmony are desired. Far too often, however, builders and owners seem to want to have as many shapes, materials and finishes as possible with the result that the finished house often looks like an advertising display for residential product manufacturers. Thus, if you stick with the large builders house, you need to simplify and unify as much as possible. For exampe, one of the first things to do is eliminate the arched garage door openings. There are no other arched shapes in the design of the house, as far as I can see, and thus, the arches are a completely foreign and inconsistent element which add to the discordant look of the exterior. Adding "borrowed" projecting shed roofs over selected windows to the existing design is another aesthetic inconsistency. For them to add to the overall character of the house, all of the gabled dormer windows should be changed to similar shed dormers. These are just a couple of examples. Do you see the issue and what needs to be done? Good luck on your project.

So for those who are interested, I did some elevations for the inside too. Just for some of the details to show my builder. these were done in photoshop by me so are not 100. the first one is the divider between the kitchen/dining and the great room. Yes I know that all natural wood is more craftsman but I wanted a lighter look and paint grade is a lot less expensive than furniture grade moldings. Especially since my wood of choice is cherry. Yes the columns will also be triangular like the porch columns. :) the fireplace wall is opposite the kitchen entry and that wall will be cherry. there will be handmade tile around the fireplace. I am considering doing a coffered ceiling in the living room again using paint grade and then painting the ceiling itself in a color. I'm not sure yet whether I'll go with a picture rail or a frieze board. I'm leaning towards the frieze board. Crown molding will be simple to work with the rest of the moldings. Maybe this for crown molding.

The gambrel scheme would require a week of intensive design work that is probably beyond the capability of those who are helping you. As a fall back to avoid the unfortunate original design I recommend using regular gables as tack-ons at the sides and a real cross gable on the front and rearranging the front rooms so the windows work. Flaring the front gable shingles over the windows and at the bottom would add a great deal to the design. The house should have shingles and no corner boards. I would consider trim colors other than white. You might be able to dress it up a bit with more gables but the framing would be slightly more complicated.

Here's a rendering our architect had done for us early in the redesign phase. However, the patio on the upstairs was missing and the supporting columns etc. Aside from those differences and obviously the stair case, the overall look is quite close. With the stairway relocated, the windows on the ground floor to the bottom right in the garage are now visible. The area directly above that is the master bath and so on. Per my previous post, the double front doors were changed out after I'd posted this up. On the ground floor, the two windows in the center are history. And although it's hard to visualize it in the conceptual, the ceilings are 10' from the ground floor on up. It's a tall house. In the end we made the final revisions and submitted those for drawings based upon the conceptual we had done as it fit our need with a few tweaks mostly on the interior. What my bride didn't care for was that we'd walk up the stairs facing a wall, then turn to the left to walk 20' give or take to the front door. Based on this rendering and maintaining the same general design from day one from the same architect, we moved forward and ended up where we are. We just didn't "toss this together" so to speak. Our architect put a fair amount of thought into the process the end results in our opinion we are pleased with. We differed somewhat on the interior layout of a couple of rooms but that's all good. The vast majority of the interior of the house replicates what was done from day one which was perfect and we love it. Thus the reason we kept it just like it was. He did an amazing job! When the day is done, we're writing the check to the mortgage company so we'll build accordingly. Like I said back at the start of the thread, everyone has their own opinions and I respect that. Some folks may think what they've designed and are building is the absolute best design in the world and I'm happy for them. On the flip side, I wouldn't give them a dime for it. Again, my opinion and while it doesn't suit me we all have varied tastes. Thank goodness or we'd be in a real mess!

Much better! I still think the middle section (with entry) needs to be worked on. The top right window looks out of place. Can it be deleted?

It is virtually impossible to understand a house design without a floor plan so it is useless to comment on it except to say it's a nice sketch of strong elements perhaps pushed a bit too close together.

Is there a reason why he cant get it more symmetrical? I would like it so much more if that section directly to the left of the front door (the 2 upper windows over the two lowers) had a match on the right side, instead of that one window by itself and that lower section with the gable (I am assuming this is the garage?) the one story section on the far left doesn't bother me at all...it looks like a sunroom added over time or something...but the main facade is so asymmetrical. Of course, that may be what you like, which is fine! These are just my thoughts and my taste.

There seems to be a series of threads about this house, making it difficult to follow the design changes or seeing the plans without searching for the previous threads which I have no interest in doing.

If you want advice give us all of the information we need in one thread.

It's better, but that small window looks funny yet, and I'm still not a fan of the dormer punching through the eave...perhaps if the dormer window and the small window were more in balance...

Also, what is that overhang off the garage that faces the front door? Is it another doorway?

Are the three staggered rooflines in front intentional? To my eye, the angle looks not enough to be intentional, but enough to look off-kilter. Or is this just the perspective of the drawing?

It looks as if the house sank until the top of the foundation touched the window sills. The major elements appear crowded and cramped, sort of a mini-mansion approach.

Alison0704 - I agree, the top right window doesn't look right. if it's deleted will the space look like its missing something?

Nini804 - I want it to look more symmetrical as well

Renovator 8 - I appreciate your comments and am sorry that my postings seem so disorganize. I was posting as I got new drawings and can't seem to get more than one picture at a time in a posting. Will get rid of the brick ledge and use just one siding element. Am hoping the next drawing will open up the front a bit.

Annie Deighnaugh -I think the overhang is a detail over the garage doors.

Circuspeanut- I hope that the rooflines will not be staggered! I am assuming it looks like this now because it is just a sketch .

An update - I spoke with the architect today. I suggested we pull the garage more to the right and have just a corner of it attach to the house. He agreed that that might help to place windows in a more symmetrical fashion. He was going to try to have something back to me today, but I didn't get anything yet. Thanks for all your helpful comments!

The house will never be symmetrical with such a large projecting garage wing. Don't be fooled by an elevation drawing; you need a 3D CAD model at this point in the design process.

Offsetting the garage will relieve the problem and allow the house to appear grander and more relaxed at the same time for a small cost.
