Report on appliances recently installed -Blue Star, Gaggs, et. al

Finally, appliances are in. Only cosmetic finishing remains. But I can cook again! It's only been a week but so far, so good:

Gaggenau Combi-Steam - LOVE IT. I cannot believe how it delivers a discernibly better food. The vegetables don't need oil, butter or any dressing; Grougeres were as good as those I was served at No. 9 Park in Boston recently; fish was moist; potatoes crisp yet buttery - I can't wait to try bread. I LOVE THIS MACHINE!

Prestige pyramid hood - after a nightmare with installation over the wrong parts being shipped as well as different fabricators resulting in uncompatibility between the hood and chimney, meaning extra costs paid to my contractor who spent extra time spinning his wheels trying to install when Prestige was insisting "nothing was wrong" until they admitted it was their error, I have to say it is a GREAT hood: powerful and I love the control - not just a 'slow, medium, high' speed machine.

Liebherr 30" built-in. Smart Design and beautiful machine. Love the smaller ice cubes and am watching to see how much longer the food keeps.

Blue Star 30" RNB range - INCREDIBLE! I was hesitant given recent posts but this machine delivers power at its highest (blackening steak was awesome) and nuance in the simmer (Sunday tomato sauce simmered all day). Hopefully, I'll feel the same years from now. And it looks great too in its Hermes orange (lol).

Gaggenau electric oven is working beautifully. Have not yet tried the rotisserie. It is accurate and has lots of options.

Bosch dishwasher - always had Bosch and it continues to please.

Blanco sink with Kohler evoke faucet fit beautifully.

GE Monogram trash compactor - delivered damaged. Waiting for replacement. Had a KitchenAid before. Now that the GE has a charcoal filter and because of the design, I went with the GE Monogram - I hope it's a durable and functions as well as my former Kitchen Aid.

I have my dream kitchen. So what if I drive a 1991 Subaru with 186,000 miles - everyone has their own indulgences!

Thank you, Yoyopa, for posting your real life experiences with your new appliances. You've made me feel very excited again about the Gagg combi that's been sitting in my garage for over a year!!!!

My dream trio to get is the gaggeneau combi-steam, the 30 inch liebherr and the 30 inch blue star!

If we were to get that far, I would put the gaggeneau next to the liebherr -- not sure if that would be problematic. How was it installing the plumbing for the steam oven?

The serial number is not accessible from the front of the machine or without pulling the unit out ??? That's ridiculous. David - are you saying you got each of those units for less than $3250 ea. ? That is an exceptionally good price, and probably worth the hassle you've gone through. FWIW - that is approx 50% off of what those Northlands sell for normally. There is only about $200-$250 difference list price between the same SZ 36" all fridge/freezer in stainless steel and the comparable Northland model. SO, like for like, it's pretty much a wash unless your dealer is giving you some sort of steep discount. Re: the racking. SZ has the full length channel too, they just choose to offer less customizable bins and shelves. The stainless of the Norhthland is more durable than the SZ plastic all things being equal, but it puts off some people also because it looks too commercial. As far a unreliable - I've read that EVERY SINGLE BRAND OF REFRIGERATOR IS UNRELIABLE (including Northland) , on the internet of course. And they are, no company makes makes totally reliable products year in and year out and satisfies all customers. Here's what I can say about the two: Over the last 40 years or so SZ has consistently produced high quality high priced built in fridges that last 20+ years. They have also continued to innovated their offerings like the first fully integrated fridges for the U.S. market, the drawer concept for residential. Other companies are starting to catch up though. Their sales go up and up , which allowed them to buy WOLF to expand their business. Northland on the other hand has flat sales and pretty much has the same box, technology and offerings they had last century. They are quality units to be sure even with their quirks. They just can't seem to crack the built in fridge market that has been dominated by SZ, GE Monogram, and now the offerings from BSH's Turkish plant. In fact they have done so well that they were acquired by the AGA group. We'll soon see just how good the product really is as AGA's marketing machine will certainly try to jumpstart sales to keep the new factory running and has the network to flog the product in place. Bottom line for me is- I would rather deal with privately held companies with long track records and family members involved in operations rather than - companies that have managers that are worried about short term goals (and their compensation) and their board's agenda and ultimately shareholders and the market, more than they are concerned with delivering a quality product to market.

I am late to this party, but know that Cohetele and I both have the newer (ZET2) versions of Monogram dbl ovens and have identical complaints. Also, share the losing temp complaint that Jerseygirlwa has. Mine, however seems to have wonderful build quality, so is very quiet and the doors are good. But it doesn't perform as I'd hoped. Trivection ovens are different, and GE has made them for a long time. The older models of Monogram convection ovens with the 'high hat' convection fan that protruded into the oven, if my memory serves me correctly, were made by Bosch for Monogram, but GE makes all the Monogram ovens now, as far as I know and have heard. Be aware, also, that DCS used to manufacture Monogram rangetops and ranges and in the last couple years, GE took over their own manufacturing. If it has the 19K burners all with the same power, it's a GE product. If it has burners of different sizes, it's DCS. DCS has always had a good reputation for their burners. I'm not saying the Monogram is now inferior to older models, I just don't know, and do know they're completely different and may have different reliability, etc....You'll just want to make sure you're comparing apples to apples. Rather than adhering to the customary standard of 18 in. or just randomly picking something different, I think a better way would be to just consider exactly what you want to be able to do - whether reaching higher shelves is more important than storage underneath the upper cabinets, etc. For example, I asked the cabinet maker to install our upper cabinets at 16 inches for several reasons: 1) I am so tired of stretching to reach upper cabinets - and I'm not that short (5' 5")!! My current cabinets (only have 2 of them though - it's a tiny kitchen) are 23 inches (yes, you read that right!) and extend to the ceiling which is 9 ft. Needless to say, it's almost impossible to reach anything other than the first shelf - I can stretch to reach the very edge of the second but usually feel as if I've pulled a muscle afterward - haha. 2) I also wanted to coordinate the height of the cabinets with the windows and do not want the cabinets to reach the ceiling (which is coffered), so was a bit limited - 18 in. would have been slightly too much. 3) I'm not worried about storage space under the upper cabinets because there are so many windows (as well as an island) that there will be plenty of space to use small appliances, etc without running into the cabinets. We don't use anything currently that would be stored on the countertop anyway. 4) As for resale, I would never think of actually measuring the height of cabinets (unless they were REALLY high) and even if I did, it wouldn't prevent me from buying a house (obviously, since my current kitchen is horrible!). I realize that there are definitely people who care about those things much more than I do though, so will just have to take that chance with resale :) Other ideas could simply be integrating a variety of heights (seemed to be trendy for a while to do that), including cabinets that extend down to the counter or have those appliance garages at the bottom.

Would you buy the Miele G 6745 Dishwasher? 10yr warr. + Miele install?

Mark, I did buy the 6745 with the 10 year warranty. We're in a open floorplan, we've had it about a month now; I'm not sure if it's quieter or not, but it washes very well, and I like the auto door opening feature. I installed the second Miele myself; the only snag was the water line didn't want to connect so (a long story shortened) we bought a 12" extention line to connect it, this went on easily. Like fauguy, I owned a previous Miele before. Despite having problems with it and checking out competitive models from Asko and Bosche, we elected to go back to Miele. The Asko bottom racks were too low, and our dishes had problems staying where they were put on the bosche racks when opening and closing them. On the Miele, the problems we had was the in-line water line with the solenoid box on it which crapped out for the third time. Now, apparently they've put the solenoid within the dw. And as for the warranty, although over an hour away, Miele will reimburse us after paying our local appliance repair facility I have a ConsumerReports on-line subscription, and I'll tell you it isn't for the reports on any appliances. Their user reviews rarely reflect CR's take on them. Brent

Since a few months have passed, can you comment on how well the LIebherr keeps your food? Do you find that the shelf life is longer with the Liebherr than with your old refrigerator? SZ supposedly boasts longer food preservation and I was wondering if LIebherr is on the same level as SZ. Thanks!

Are there pics of this kitchen somewhere? Especially the blue star-- is it really orange? I really want to see it!

Hi, all. I wanted to respond to the last few posters and give an update:

I am still in heaven, very pleased - especially now that Gerhard's have traded the GE Monogram compactor for the KitchenAid. The KitchenAid works great. It does not have the look of the GE but who cares - it works! And there is nothing like cooking in my kitchen now. I do a lot of searing that requires my cast iron pans to be white hot. The Blue Star delivers the heat and the Prestige hood takes care of all the smoke. The pyramid design and capture area, not to mention the sheer power, is a cook's dream. And I still love all the appliances listed above. The Gaggenaus are unbelievable: the combi steam is amazing and I just used the rotisserie in the electric Gagg for the best leg of lamb I've ever made. I can't wait for Thanksgiving and the holidays.

Hello8 - My Gagg combi is next to the Liebherr; it is no problem at all and looks great. Make sure you have someone who knows what they're doing install it. If you're uncertain, ask the place where you bought it (I would guess they, as a certified Gagg dealer, could recommend (or maybe have on staff) an individual with experience to do installation.

Quiltgirl - the Liebherr keeps my greens and other foods noticibly longer. I try not to keep many foods long anyway. But I have noticed that salad greens and herbs keep much longer than my last frig. I've never had an SZ so I can't compare but I just like the narrow depth but tall construct of the Liebherr.

nesting12 - Don't have photos - yet. I still have a few more cosmetic things to do in the kitchen and hope, once everything is completely done, post some photos. And the BlueStar is really orange. lol. I think it looks great. When I post photos, I'm sure I'll hear a variety of opinions - only natural as there are a variety of tastes and design sensibilities. Good luck to all in the midst of their kitchen project!
