Comments (10)Most of the damage to foliage stems from soils that retain too much water and not enough air, and this occurs because the soils are made from particles too fine - like peat, coir, compost, manures, sand, topsoil ...... This is a very easy concept to grasp - just think about how much air space there is in a pint of BBs vs a pint of play sand. While sand might drain well, it doesn't hold enough air, and it holds too much water, to be considered a smart choice for bringing along containerized plants. How much water a soil holds is very closely linked to particle size, so the increasing aeration and drainage in container media pivots on the size of the particles in our soils. Plants LOVE air in the root zone. Plants that don't get enough air and have poor gas exchange in the root zone suffer from impaired root function and the accompanying inability to move water efficiently - thus the spoiled foliage. When using these water-retentive soils, you have to choose between watering properly, so you're flushing dissolved solids (from tap water & fertilizer solutions) from the soil regularly) and risking root rot setting in because the soil remains wet too long, or watering in sips to prevent root rot, which practice supports the build-up of soil salts that inhibit the plant's ability to absorb water. Neither are good choices. OTOH, using a free-draining and well-aerated soil that allows you to water copiously every time you water, with no concern for root rot issues OR salt build-up, offers you the best chance for being able to bring along attractive plants. These types of soils also increase the critical margin for error - offering you much wider, problem free latitude in your watering/fertilizing habits. I'm going to suggest that you read this link, it's a good place to begin. When you're done with that, try the one I linked to below. I have found that the cornerstone of a grower's ability to consistently produce healthy plants lies in an understanding of how important soils are to the planting. Some growers learn by trial and error over a number of years ..... unnecessary because you can learn it in an hour if it's laid out in front of you; and some growers are just content with whatever results they are presently realizing because of how their priorities are established. Anyway ....... find the other link below. Good luck .... hopefully you'll have questions by the score! ;-) Al Here is a link that might be useful: More about soils...See MoreEpoxy grout vs. grout shield
Comments (18)First, no mixing, so no color variations. Epoxy needs mixing also...and is messy. Any leftover can be re-sealed and used for another project later on. No sealer needed. Good color. I've seen white used on a test board... two hours later, splashed mustard, wine and coffee over it and wiped up clean with a damp sponge. A little learning curve for application~ Do small areas at a time. Fill joints well. Slightly dampen tiles before application. Using a WELL wrung out sponge, clean the area in a circular motion within a minute or so of application. I like to use either a microfibre-backed sponge or a sponge with a well wrung out microfibre cloth wrapped around it to make single passes over the area within a couple of minutes. Go on to the next area. An hour or two later, just buff off any haze with a dry or almost dry microfibre towel. Two people working together make it go very easy....although one can do it. Remove any rings and wear some disposable gloves....Fusion Pro loves skin, as well! Once done, you should never need to do anything else to it other than general cleaning....See MoreYour thoughts; year-round pool in CT neighborhood
Comments (27)Hi everyone! Thanks so much for your feedback. I didn't post ALL of the info from pool and spa forum as the posts were very lengthy and I didn't want to bore anyone! Having said that, we opted to withdraw our application for the variance. We decided to down-size the project so we wouldn't need a variance. We have been approved for the build (both pool and enclosure) but not the swim lesson business yet. For those of you who did not read the posts on pool and spa, the lessons I would teach are private and would occur when my neighbors are all at work. Our neighborhood already has several home-based businesses: a day care, a successful Amway business, a window replacement business, a handyman business and a home alarm business. I may not have described clearly enough where the project will be located on our property; the pool will be in our back yard but not directly behind the house; off to the left. I agree w/ you all; a pool does not belong in the front yard!! When we started to get serious about the project we spoke individually w/ each neighbor. NONE of them appeared to have a problem w/ any aspect of the project. It wasn't until we asked the town for a variance (we asked for 10' of the 40' setback) that the truth came out. The real estate agent next door was the first person I spoke w/ and he was very excited for us. He said it would be great and asked if he could be the first one in! That is why we were shocked at the outcry when the variance request letters went out.(Told you the story was long! Thanks for sticking it out) As far as having a pool, ours would be the 4th in the neighborhood but the only 'indoor" one. Would you be shocked to learn that the real estate agent is always across the street in the summer as a guest of one of the pool owners? Says it's great as he doesn't have to join the local pool club... ! Anyway, thanks for all of your input; I appreciate the feedback! joanneswimsct...See MoreHas anyone used Virginia Hardwoods Prime Aqua shield Vinyl Plank?
Comments (135)HI I had Prime Waterproof Dark Roast installed in my kitchen and back of the house, I hate it, I cannot get this floor looking clean. It smudges and never look clean. Has anyone else had problems with this floor. I have tried Bono and Rejuvinate cleaner for LVP floors, but left them looking hazy. My floor is Matt finish. Which seems to show every foot print and sock print. Im going crazy trying to find the best cleaning for this floor. Could it be my mop? I use a microfiber mop. Does anyone else use something else? Suggestions are appriciated....See Morelobelia
