Hi Everyone!

First off I would like to thank you all for helping me with this tiling project. I didn't post many questions, but found this forum to be a great research tool. In fact I would probably go as far as to say that I learned how to tile from reading this forum. Thanks Bill and Mongo :)

The remodel involved demo'ing the old shower (which leaked into the basement) and the strange cupboard above the closet, which really served no purpose other than to make the ceiling in the shower painfully low. It turned out that the tile was attached to drywall, which had completely rotted away. Demo was easy. Once the first hole was made in the tile, the rest came off in my hands. I also found a nail in a pipe. Hmmm, wonder who put that there.

After doing all of my research, the tiling part was pretty easy. The crown molding was another story. But with a little wood filler and paint it looks almost perfect.

Thought I would share a couple of before and after shots. It's hard to get good pictures of such a small bathroom. Thanks again!

Pat yourself on the back for a job well done! Tiling is not as easy as it might seem. Love your tile and color scheme. The crown came out great!

Wow, thank you so much for all the nice words! I'm happy to share my sourcing info, of course. For the paint color: First, I went through 8 of those little Benjamin Moore paint sample jars before I came up with the final color. It's Benjamin Moore Gossamer Blue in the Aura Bath and Spa Finish. It's kind of expensive but I always try to go with BMoore if we can, or possibly Sherwin Williams. What I'd really like to try is that Ellen Kenyon stuff (I think that's the name) but it's too much of a hassle and I'm basically lazy. Anyway. Benjamin Moore, Gossamer Blue in the Aura finish. Shower curtain: Bed, Bath and Beyond. It's called Color Block Blue Fabric Shower Curtain by DKNY ($60). Here's a link, sorry it's not clickable http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=113401&RN=10 The vanities are from Lowe's, believe it or not. I came very close to buying a 60" vanity from Ebay that mimicked this pottery barn style but in the end we decided to go with two of these. I was a little hesitant because there are complaints on the lowe's site about the marble staining but so far it's been great. The tile in the shower (which is not shown) is just plain old 4" white ceramic tile, and the beadboard is not the PVC kind because we couldn't find it, but this is not a bathroom that will get a lot of heavy use, so I'm not worried about it. We also added the crown molding and changed out the light fixtures. The ones that were in there were hanging by chains and really completely awful. That was obviously not part of the original damage but it finished out the room. The mirrors are just inexpensive decorative mirrors my husband came across on a super clearance shelf at TJ Maxx, I think. They were only around $25 each, believe it or not. The faucets are also from Lowe's and I am not sure which ones I chose but they were under $100 each. They were the first ones I saw that I thought would work and they were inexpensive, so that was a win-win. We also had the flooring replaced in the living room, dining room and hallway as a result of this damage, so it all just looks so wonderful. The original floor that was there was a light colored laminate and it was not my favorite. Now we have hardwood in a nice, rich medium color. Yay! Thanks again for all the nice comments. Let me know if you have any more questions. It's not the super-deluxe redo that I often see on this forum and I don't have the budget or the temperament (mostly the budget!) to spend a lot of time/money on things like cool toilets and deluxe tile, but I do enjoy reading about it here! Thank you so much for all the comments! Here are some close up shots... Spice cabinet (1 of 2) I cook... A LOT... so these are GREAT! I don't have to get on a step ladder anymore to reach them lol! These pulls were what I had in our old house and I LOVED them so I wanted to find them again for this house. I was able to score these on Ebay for $2 each. White glass subway tile and the cabinets are by Shenandoah in Maple Linen, all wood construction The granite is Alaska White. We went to four different granite yard at the advice of our fabricator. By reading this forum I found that you should never rely on those little pieces of granite at the big box stores! I am so grateful for that information. We never would have found this granite. It was love at first sight! The floor is Tuan AKA Malaccan Cherry from a local flooring store.

Last Sunday, Jan. 3, I posted a photo that marked the beginning. The following two photos document the progress. This is how the dinette looks today after one week. Miss the brick. The brick and pine boards are gone but neatly stacked elsewhere for use in the future or donation. The ceramic floor is partially out, the debris taken to the dump. So far the dirt and grime are confined to this area. DH is working alone. We have been planning a new kitchen for years and years, but other projects at a vacation home and here at home took precedence ( and truthfully we were also struggling with the plan- better but not finalized yet) with DH doing most of the work which included a new kitchen, patios, a portico with columns, two bathroom remodels, a new dock house after Isabelle. It sounds crazy but my DH always has a project. This is the third remodel for this kitchen. Almost 40 years or so ago soon after we purchased the house, he enclosed the carport to make the dinette and added a garage adjacent to it; however, the galley kitchen that includes a a large eating area, connects to the dinette through a doorway. Over the years, we have stripped and refinished the cabinets, added an island in the eating space, changed countertops, updated appliances and floors, vaulted the ceiling on one side. The current plan is to remove the wall to open the kitchen to the dinette, install new cabinets, countertops, appliances, and wood floors etc. This week I have been tweaking the plans, reading the forums and Houzz, and thinking about finishes. Regards to everyone. I have enjoyed having a peek into your kitchens. It is nice to be in such good company.

I've copied your post, Sean, and inserted my replies in italics... Hi guys, I've been brought to these forums as I've been trying to propagate some cuttings of various trees around where I live. As mentioned in the title, I'm quite the novice so any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. The set up I have is a 24 way divided greenhouse container purchased from my local hardware store (see pics). I'm trying to grow several jacaranda cuttings and a few other trees that look like some fig species (could be entirely wrong here). Until now, I've just followed some basic cutting instructions from online, but after a hit rate of 0% after my first batch I assumed I was doing something. I'm living in Sydney where it is currently Spring. Some questions: - Moisture levels: I have been planting the cuttings in a mix of vermiculite and purlite (soil-less mixes were suggested) which I give a spray over before and after planting the cuttings. Vermiculite is not a great choice as it contains less air than perlite. Perlite, being of sperical shapes, holds air (oxygen) which is required by roots. Vermiculite is isort of in the shapes of rectangular prisms. Check it out on Google. And therefore it pacts down. The first attempt was left in some direct sunlight… Yes, this would have cooked the cuttings. Even if the lid had been left off, direct sunlight is not a good idea. … which I believe basically steamed the whole lot. Second time around, I have kept out of direct sunlight but still exposed to bright light. Should I be leaving the ventilation slots open? closed? half and half? Fully open. Actual Cuttings: I have been removing all but around 2 or 3 leaves from the cuttings I take, whilst cutting the remaining leaves in half or thereabouts. A few cuttings appear to lose their leaf stems after a couple of days to a week. Is this the correct procedure? I am not sure what you mean by 'losing their leaf stems'. Cuttings should look like they did when you first made them. Some leaves might fall off but cuttings should never look wilted, blackened or frightened. Mold/barking: I've attached photos of some white fluff that appears on a few of the cuttings. I've read this could be a process called 'barking' whilst others assume it to be mold. Should I expect this and if not, how should i remove? I've never heard of barking. I wouldn't like white fluff about anywhere on the cuttings. I suspect it is mould. This is a sign of too much humidiy. In fact, I think even with the vents fully open there might be too much himidity. I was thinking of suggesting that you prop the lip up a little to provide even more ventilation. Blackened Tips: The ends of some cuttings appear to darken in colour, almost blackening after a few days as well. I'm assuming the tips are dying off here but I'm not entirely sure. Does this mean I'm leaving too many leaves on the cutting? It doesn't mean that you are leaving too many leaves on the cuttings. We always left at least half on. Blackened tips means that the cutting is almost certainly failing and is best removed. You can fit many more cuttings in your pots than just one single one.

Beautiful! I can't believe you did that yourself and it's your first attempt at tiling. That is impressive! The colors are wonderful, too. What a tremendous improvement over the old bath!

Wow, thanks for all of the nice feedback. It really does give me a wonderful sense of accomplishment, and a tangible one too. I have to admit that before I started I was pretty nervous about my tiling abilities. So much so that I re-roofed my garage and shop (with the help of a friend) as a way of putting off the tiling job. :)

The paint is Benjamin Moore Gray Wisp, it's a blue green gray that changes with the light, as you can see from my photos. It's one of my favorite colors in my house.

Beautiful job. Can you list your tile, fixtures, paint, & etc that you used. I love the color of paint and I am interested in the fixtures used.

Glad I stopped by the forum, I didn't know there were questions for me. I have another bathroom remodel in my future, so I'm sure I'll be back for lots of advice.

Here are more details as requested:

Paint Color: Benjamin Moore Gray Wisp. If you can't get Ben Moore, I noticed last week that Behr has a color "silver sage" that is a very close match. And just about the same as the RH Silver Sage...can they do that?

Grout Color: Laticrete Silver Shadow *Special order from Lowes. If you're painting a blue/green/gray color, I highly recommend this grout, it's gray with blue/green undertones.

Subway Tile: Lowes. I think Interceramic brand.
Beaded accent tile, also from Lowes.

Shower Fixtures: American Standard Williamsburg tub filler and faucet handle.
Kohler 30 polished chrome slide bar with Bancroft trim kit.
Kohler Bancroft supply elbow
Kohler Bancroft Hand Shower, polished chrome.

Not Pictured, I also installed the Restoration Hardware Vintage glass shelf in the shower, on the wall opposite the showerhead. I absolutely love it! I know the niches are also popular (may do that in my next bathroom), but I'm glad I went with the glass shelf in this shower, and it was very easy to install.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Hopefully I'll be back on the forum with questions of my own when I finally get around to tackling my second bathroom remodel!

It looks lovely! I'm doing a similar style bathroom and am using Kohler Bancroft fixtures. I want a hand held shower head as my main shower spout like you have, but I was worried that the Bancroft one might be too heavy or awkward. How do you like it? Does it seem sturdy? What about that sliding bar? I don't want my kids to knock it of and bang up the shower... This is for our kids' bathroom. I'm debating between a fixed speakman shower head (but would miss the ease of a handheld), this one you got or the Kohler flip (though the style doesn't really go with the rest of the bathroom).
