All Done! Before and After Photos

This site was so helpful during our recent kitchen remodel and now, during construction of our pool. I really learned so much and my favorite thing was photos! I didn't really have time during the remodel process to post progress pictures or seek advice on details, but I can share some before and after photos now. Hopefully, something I leave behind will help someone else.....

The Story: 1996 kitchen badly in need of updating. Built when we were young and broke...and liked green. Lots of green. We grew up, worked hard, saved our money...and stopped liking green. This was not a makeover to our dream kitchen. We plan to be in the house only 2 more years so we tried to keep the remodel simple with the aim to update the kitchen with resell in mind.

What a great change! I like how you made the island seating more friendly for three :) And the cabinets (which were lovely to start with) are just fabulous with the granite ;)

Wonderful ! I love what you have done . You were absolutely frugal but it doesn't show...looks very warm and well planned and shows how much can be done on a careful well thought out plan. You are to be congratulated. Congrats !! c

It is kind of annoying how ivillage adds the hyperlinks to our text with advertising... Easy to think someone is a spammer when they might not be. Waaaa hoooo!!!! One of my future projects will be making it look a little more homey, by adding an area rug to my craft area and adding a LARGE exercise mat under that area. I'll be watching thrift shops and flea markets and craigslist and whatnot for cheap stuff. For this project, no, I really didn't purge a ton. In looking through my before pictures when I started, I had estimated I might get rid of no more than 20% of my stuff. I did take about 4 boxes of stuff to goodwill and 1 box of stuff is designated for the habitat for humanity restore store that is opening in our area in a few weeks. We're also taking an old tv to the electronics recycling event in our town this Saturday (nobody on freecycle wanted it). I put our nordictrack ski machine up for sale on craigslist. If it doesn't sell, I'll donate it somewhere. I had three large garbage bags worth of trash and a number of boxes/etc. for recycling. Mostly though, the stuff that was down there just needed to be better organized and put away somewhere. I bought a few more shelving units (I so agree with you on the infrastructure, talley_sue - if you don't have "a place" where you can put things, it all ends up piled on the floor so your choices are purge and/or make storage options!). I lucked out in that my neighbor redid his garage this summer and threw out three 5 shelf shelving units (one matched our basement shelves, one matched our garage shelves, one didn't match at all - I shared that one with a friend who I have been helping with decluttering her basement) and one 2 shelf shelving unit and two 3 shelf shelving units. So that definitely helped me a lot. Those 5 shelf shelving units (24" deep) that I LOVE LOVE LOVE are from Home Depot. They are plastic and just snap together easy peasy. Cost is about $41 each right now, so they definitely aren't cheap. I really strongly prefer them over the metal shelves. They are so much stronger, easier to assemble and move, and nicer looking, in my opinion, unless you can afford the stainless steel restaurant quality shelving. The one caution I would give anyone starting out in buying organizing supplies is to put totes on the shelves at the store before buying. A lot of totes didn't fit well (just barely too wide to put two side by side or just barely too tall to go on shelf). I did also invest in some new totes (on sale at Home Depot for $1-$5), including a bunch of sweater boxes and shoe boxes. I had a mish mash of assorted totes I had picked up over the years. I'm happy to say I was able to use up a large number of those in this project. I am trying to transition as much cardboard into plastic as possible, just in case it ever floods down there. Finally, I put labels on everything, since in my world, out of sight is out of mind and with totes I can't see through, I might never find things again if I hid them all away. :) Eventually we want to finish the basement, but that's a long way off and even when we start, it will likely be done in stages for financial reasons. Epressler - all I did to figure out which hardwood to get was learn which floors were the hardest (on the Janka scale), decide which colors I liked best, and then ask the owner of the hardwood store which brand he loved the best. He said that all the installers LOVE Owens Flooring, and it has a really thick face to it, so it can be re-sanded three times. It was a good choice, because out of 24 boxes, only two smallish pieces were not straight. Anyway, you asked about how many samples I looked at to get the right color - just two. Brazilian cherry has so many colors to it anyway, that the samples you get may be vastly different than what will be in the boxes. It's hard to believe that one type of tree can produce all those colors! But my goal wasn't to match the cabs to the floor - it was just how it happened, because I guess I really love that color of wood! Chitown_remodel - here is a picture of the backsplash without flash, and the mother of pearl tile is made by Olympia. Dianalo - your idea is brilliant. That is EXACTLY what we will do. Now here's a question, if you happen to ever read this (or anyone who has an opinion) - we already have a very pretty mirror above the fireplace in the great room. Should we move that to the mudroom and put a painting above the fireplace, or is it OK to have two mirrors? Msmagoo - I designed the kitchen myself, and I was helped out quite a bit because I used ideas I learned here on the kitchen forum. For instance, we have a cell phone charging drawer. It's nothing fancy, but it wouldn't have occurred to make one - I read about them on this forum. My ceilings are eight feet... and you might get sick if I told you how much we spent. I will say that I got great prices on the appliances and wood floor, and fair prices on other stuff. Zecchini, I love your kitchen renovation so much from the color of the cabinets, to the hardware, to those big beautiful floor tiles on the diagonal, to that gorgeous backsplash, to those counters are stunning and that little doggie really enhances the pictures. Wow, what a beautiful kitchen! How lucky were you that you had such wonderful cabinets already. I especially love your granite. It looks exactly like mine, but they called mine Kashmir Gold. Enjoy your new space.

Very Pretty! Before I comment further though, I can't believe that you had the same green countertops I had -- till I remodeled last month! Yours were in much better condition though than the ones I moved in to.
Back to your kitchen -- lovely! I love your range and micro. Counters are beautiful and island is great! Very interesting backsplash. You must love these changes. Enjoy!

Great choices! Smart move to work with your existing cabinets and put your savings toward a pool! It looks awesome. Looking forward to seeing the pool on the other forum-- with your great taste, I'm sure it will turn out wonderfully!

Beautiful job!! We have alot of similar choices. I also have New Venetian Gold granite, Ge Profile range, microwave and refrigerator. Love your floor, appliances, granite and your backsplash. You did a great job with this remodel. Could you share name, color and where you got your tile for your backsplash. Just love it.

Gosh, you guys are so nice. Thanks for all your nice comments. Here are some answers to a few questions:

The Backsplash: I feel so sorry for all those poor souls who agonize over the backsplash--asking for mock-ups, changing their minds a thousand times. It is a hard decision. I just hauled a piece of my granite, a cabinet door, my floor tile, and an inspiration photo around to about 6 different tile stores, sat down, and sat "give me your best idea." The best idea was from Trinity Tile here in Central Florida:

Interceramic, Oxide Ceramic tile in Graphite ( a dark chocolate brown) color
6x6 tiles were $3.45 a square foot, 1x6 pieces were $2.35 a piece. The 3x6 subway tiles and the 2x2 inserts were just cut from the 6x6 by a great tile guy.

Floor: the floor is a chiseled edge travertine in an Ashlar (sometimes called Venetian) pattern. It comes in 4 different sizes and then the pattern is created

Coffee Pot: Is Kitchen Aid Pro and yes, it makes a great cup of coffee.

Wow - what a great transformation. When I saw the before pics I thought gee, what's wrong with those cabinets. I was so glad to see they were still in the new pics!! Everything looks just beautiful!
