We are extremely please with our Bosch 800 Plus SHE68E15UC dishwasher which was installed in October 2009. We continue to enjoy cleaner than ever dishes and sparkling glassware. We use about a tablespoon of Trader Joe's dish washing detergent, plus Jet Dry in the rinse aid dispenser. Our water is very hard so the water softener is a great feature. The Bosch requires that you select the level of softening (0 - 7, I think), whereas the Miele apparently does this automatically (can someone confirm this?). We like the cutlery tray. Some people do not like cutlery trays at all, regardless of brand, because they feel it takes extra time to load...even though they also find that unloading can be quicker. The Bosch comes with a cutlery basket, too, that can be used on the lower rack. Miele has some additional baskets/locations to load utensils, too. As far as noise is concerned...I simply do hear the Bosch at all. We've clean the multi-stage microfine filter once in 3 months. We just rinsed it off under the tap...a 30 second job. Regardless of which dishwasher you end up with, the salt for the water softener can be from Miele (their Somat brand) at about $10 per 2.6 lb box, or Morton's System Saver® II Formula Pellets at about $6 per 40 lb bag, or Cargill's Diamond Crystal® Pellets with Softener Care Formula at about $7 for a 40 lb bag. Not sure the insulation - damp or otherwise - makes much sense to me. At least in the Bosch DWs and I would have to imagine, any well constructed DW, the insulation is not open to the DW itself and in fact is more open to the outside than to the inside of the DW cavity. So should the insulation be getting overheated or dampened somehow, I would imagine that smell would be just as profound when you're in front of the DW with the DW door shut as when the DW door is open because the source of the smell is on the outside of the DW. I did have the dreaded DW stink. We had put in our DW about a month before the renovation and at that time, the DW did not smell at all. After the renovation, put the DW back and it smelt like the dickens for a few days. I didn't really suspect the DW 'coz it hadn't smelt at all at its first install but still, the smell was something fierce and entirely unpalatable. Well, it took a few days but eventually our kitchen sink backed up - the drain had had a slow clog somewhere and it took a while to be detectable. We got our plumber out, he flushed the line to look for the clog and indeed he did mention that after a renovation, it is not uncommon for the drain to become slow because during a renovation, construction trash does tend to get into the drains and so usually the drain lines should be snaked to ensure they're clear. He did say that he didn't hit anything noticeable but bottom line, the drain cleared, the sink drains perfectly and the DW immediately lost its stench. In the two years since the renovation has been done, the DW has not smelled at all except on the couple of occasions when a dirty dish was left in it for several several days when I went out of town (don't usually leave dirty dishes in the DW when am to be out of town for a week or more but I've forgotten a couple of times). I do a DW load every 3 to 4 days and I don't get DW-odour in that interval. Based on my experience, whenever I read of smelly dishwashers, I suspect a slow drain with the sewer gases backing up. One probably doesn't smell it in the kitchen because the smell gets a chance to diffuse. Well, that's my $0.02

I've had the Bosch 440C05UC / 40 for about two years and I've never liked it. My first surprise was its depth -- quite a bit less than the screaming, on-its-last-legs Kenmore that it replaced. It holds less, no matter how it is loaded. I didn't notice this in the store where it was on display. It certainly looked normal there. It seems quiet enough, especially compared to that poor Kenmore. I can hear it when it's running because my kitchen is open to all the rooms on this level of the house. But the sound isn't obnoxious or loud. The salesman claimed that I wouldn't be able to hear it running. Of course I can hear it! But it's not terribly intrusive. It smells funny. Did from the moment of unpacking. Not swampy, but weird, sort of strangely metallic, unlike anything else in my olfactory repertoire. The smell is strongest just after a wash is completed, and it won't subside unless I open the door and let it air out. We've checked the installation, the filters, the detergent, the rinse agent, and all are correct; besides, the smell was present even during installation. This model does not have a delay start, which I miss very much and will insist on if I ever purchase another dishwasher. My Bosch doesn't clean well. Glasses are usually a bit streaky and filmy, even with enzyme detergent and rinse agent. It has several wash options, but the full-on potscrubber one is the only one I use. The others simply don't clean my dishes. I have a set of gold-rimmed crystal glasses from my grandmother. Stupidly I put four of them in the dw one time after dinner with friends. Now those four no longer have their gold rim. If I remember to open the door when the cycle is complete, most things end up being dry enough to put away. Plastics are another story, and other posts have provided detailed information. The potscrubber cycle doesn't scrub, not like my old Kenmore anyway. All pots with anything cooked on emerge from the Bosch with stuff still stuck on. I now set aside time to finish scrubbing pots and casserole dishes and so on. The rack system is a nuisance as has been noted in some previous posts. There are tines where I don't want them and blank spaces where I'd like tines. I removed the cutlery basket altogether and put in the old Kenmore basket. In sum, its prettier and quieter than my old Kenmore, but in every other respect it is a disappointment. Sorry for the negative post. How frivolous it can seem to complain about a dishwasher when there are people all over the world without dishes or food to put on them. Ok, I'm another dissatisfied Bosch owner. We have a Bosch gas oven, microwave and 800 series Evolution dishwasher. We've had all three appliances for 18 months. The dishwasher had an odd smell inside for just about a year. I thought it would never go away. After we discovered the smell (kind of sweet chemical smell), a quick search for Bosch smell came up with a number of hits. The other problem we have is the end of cycle beep. Even though I have found instructions online how to turn it off or down, it does not work on my top of the line 800 model. I wrote to Bosch a while back asking for help. I've received three replies telling me it can be done and then they send me instructions for another model even though I have been very specific about our exact model number. I wrote them once again a couple weeks ago begging for help and still no reply. I'm pretty fed up. Because of this problem we cannot do dishes before we head to bed or lie down on the sofa to watch TV (read "sleep" :-) because the blasted beep will wake us up and it will keep on beeping every few minute or so until you either open the door or turn the DW off. I wrote to Bosch asking them why they bothered making such a quiet DW if the beep is going to set your nerves on end anyhow. I also do not like the top rack organization. We can get only about 2/3 of what we used to be able to get in our 20 year old GE. The microwave beep is just as irritating and though you can turn it off, it also turns your timer beep off at the same time. Discovered that after the kitchen filled with smoke one night. I love the way the Bosch looks with its clean European lines but that doesn't buy much when there are so many other issues for me. Jodi-
