Ruby Red BlueStar finally in! And a couple questions...

At long long last our Ruby Red 48" RNB BlueStar range with griddle was installed on Friday. I love how it looks, and you can see in the photo that I obviously love bright colors. The backsplash isn't in yet (it'll be blue and white Dutch-style tiles and a big iron Victorian overmantel mirror) and the soapstone hasn't been oiled, but it's getting easy to see what the finished product will look like.

For you BlueStar owners out there, I have a couple questions.

1) I've tried to turn on my griddle but nothing seems to happen. No clicking sound, no sound of gas coming out. I get nervous and turn it off. I'll call BlueStar on Monday to see what's up, but if any of you have advice I could use over the weekend I'd appreciate it.

2) My manual says nothing about an initial burn-off time for the ovens, but I've seen people here mention one - something like an hour at 250 degrees, then several hours at 500. I turned on one of the ovens to make sure it worked and hoo boy, even with just a few seconds of being on there was light smoke and stink. As we don't yet have the handles installed on our windows, or the motor in the vent hood, I shut it off. So, I just wanted to hear other people's experiences with the burn-off period.

You really must burn off the manufacturing oils, etc. in the oven so they won't out gas into your first roast pheasant. My manuf. recommended an hour @ 350. I don't know the ramifications of starting and then interrupting the procedure as you have now done. I hope it works out for you.

Thank you, everyone, for your responses. I'm going to print this out to show whoever comes to fix the problem. They had the diagram and everything else they needed to do the installation properly. However, when my husband called yesterday to have the matter rectified was given an excuse as to why it was done the way it is versus the way it is supposed to be. This remodeling project cannot end soon enough. On a happier note, I am thismuchcloser to actually being able to use my range. And again my thanks for your assistance-- without all of you I never would have known about BlueStar, let alone be the proud owner of one now.

Representatives from the company have been saying for years- “It is cosmetic”. Shards of glass coming off the liner mixed with a convection fan, is not cosmetic. ”I have never heard of it happening.” http://www.wolfblueovenchipping.com/case-information/ ”It only has affected a very small number of appliances” and yet some here have had three or more in a row that failed. “It was fixed years ago.” Last case in this forum was reported this year on an induction range. Previously Wolf has brought oven after oven during the full warranty time. They gave this person a hard time. The “M” oven was designed to make it easier to repair. It has been affected too. One tactic Wolf has used in the past is to upsell if possible when people have issues with something like the “E” oven. They get them to pay the difference to buy an M knowing it has the same issues and these fail too.. Even if they had the fix tomorrow, it would take several years to know if it really worked because some go bad after the warranty is out. This happened to me and they would not give me an estimate to repair, only that it would start at $800. I have read of repairs costing $2500. I personally have had issues with blue enamel in Dacor, Electrolux and Wolf so I would not buy blue in anything except Gaggenau.

dchall, Since the tree has been in the ground for a year now and is established, it is watered weekly, either by Mother Nature or by us during the dry season when it gets a good, long soaking by hose. We try to ensure 1" a week. The tree's root flare isn't buried. Being a young tree, the flare is not big. The raised soil ring (native soil and composted mix) around the tree is obscuring the view of the flare. It is fertilized regularly (every 6-8 weeks since it is established) with citrus fertilizer. Fresh compost is applied and worked into the soil 3 times a year. We appreciate your input on the grass, but as dirtygardener stated, we have restrictions on both watering and fertilizing lawns here. That fertilizer ends up in our water supply through our normal rainy season and excess watering by us. Many area communities are starting to ban fertilizer altogether. Our Gulf and rivers are full of red tide and green algae...the worst in history. The current event started in October of 2017, and is getting increasingly worse every month with no end in sight. The effect on our marine life, our own physical health and our economy has been devastating. Red tide and green algae occur naturally in small amounts every year. But, it is suspected that the huge amounts of fertilizer from big sugar farms that get washed out into our rivers and end up in the Gulf are feeding the algae. Housing developments, where applying lawn fertilizer and watering to excess to grow lush grass is common, are only contributing to the problem. So, we will continue to responsibly water and fertilize our trees and plants and let Mother Nature determine when our grass gets watered and we will accept our grass as it is. Our neighborhood and surrounding areas all have yards similar to ours. Just an FYI, many of the weeds that grow in our lawns are host plants for the caterpillars of smaller butterflies and moths. Applying fertilizers and weed killers would kill not only the weeds but the caterpillars that feed on them.

@eam44, we are making a last gasp effort at getting it fixed. We had a repair person out, and after 3 visits, some of the issues have been fixed. Yay! Burners don't click off anymore, second fan in oven works, turns out one of the heater elements wasn't being told to turn on, and now it does. So oven heats up a lot quicker (but still takes a long time compared to cheaper ovens- see below). However, even though the master control board has been replaced, the oven still does not track the temperature that is set- it does not seem to recognize that the temperature has fallen. So you have to continually turn the oven off, turn it on at least 60 degrees more than it was set, and then it takes its temperature and figures out that it is way below set point. Why the hell can't I set the Wolf oven at a temperature, and trust that it will be at least close to that temperature? Also, sometimes the temperature indicator shows, and sometimes it doesn't- the lights just stay out. So it's an ongoing process, and lots of $ to repair (although these repair people have been great). We talked to the repair people about BS. They said that they have had a lot of problems getting parts from them- very long wait times. It may be that with the COVID issue, they are almost shut down. They like Wolf because they are very responsive and parts get sent out right away. That is their perspective from a repairman's job. From a homeowner/user's perspective, I am not so crazy about Wolf, because my oven still doesn't function properly. Anyway, I would never, ever buy a Wolf range again. We have a Sharp range in our guest apartment (electric top, separate microwave and electric oven below), and the oven on that thing beats the pants off the Wolf. I set the temperature, it heats up in minutes, and it actually MAINTAINS that temperature during the entire bake or roast. I don't have to check it, it checks it for me. And it does it for about 1/10 of the cost of the Wolf range. Wolf looks high end, and is marketed as such, but it isn't.

I washed the inside of mine completely with soap and hot water and rinsed before turning on the oven at all and it helped a great deal.

Thanks for all the comments! I'll post another photo when the kitchen is finished -- with a bit of luck, in a couple weeks. But it seems like the completion date is always a couple weeks away...

Congratulations! Wow- how exciting! I ordered a ruby red too - it's sitting in its shipping crate in the garage of our new house, which is still under construction - we've only been able to peek ever so slightly. (Is yours RAL 3003?) I also got the brass trim. Can't wait until I can start cooking!!

Redrange-- re griddle not coming on-- we had the same experience with our grill, and after a call to Bluestar and a closer reading of the manual, found out that it uses a glowplug, not an igniter, and it will ignite the gas after approximately 45 seconds. Hope this is the same with yours, and that you'll be happily cooking pancakes in the morning. Your range is gorgeous!!

Thanks, cmg01. That helped me sleep easier. :)

I talked to customer service today, and indeed it will take the griddle a minute or two to come on, contrary to what my manual said. And yes, for the ovens it's 1 hr at 250 degrees, then let it cool completely, then 2 hrs at 500, both times with a lot of stench and a need for ventilation. I don't know why this wasn't in my manual, but the woman in customer service said (with a sigh in her voice) that they're coming out with new manuals shortly.

I think I have New Appliance Anxiety -- the fear of touching the wrong switch and having the whole thing go kerplewy. I've been eyeing the dishwasher with suspicion, too, although it seems innocent enough...

Gorgeous, thanks for posting the picture. I've been debating colors for when I order my Bluestar and this was one I'm considering (to go with my Verde Fuoco granite) so your timing is great!

kstones - klb 2000's post reminded me that I haven't answered the question about the hood! Yes indeed it is a Modern-Aire. I couldn't see on their website where they talk about custom painting, but obviously they do it.

fori -- yes, yellow! and blue! Mwah ha ha! Even better, they're all Ikea cabinets, painted. Our house painter took them on as a challenge.

I'll post more detailed photos in a couple weeks, when it's all done. I want to keep you in suspense. :)

I think Modern Aire's prices are comparable to most other big hoods, and I don't think they make their own blowers. We're still waiting for ours, as the salesman at the appliance store forgot to order it. I think he said that Modern Aire uses a Thermador blower, but I'm not positive. I could be speaking nonsense.

And yes, they can paint in any RAL color, so I had them do Ruby Red (I think Vent-A-Hood will do RAL colors, too). It turned out a hair different than the BlueStar, but the color is so close that no one is going to notice a difference but me, and I'll forget about it soon enough.

Regarding the Modern Aire hoods, I also had Modern Aire color match to my Lacanche range (RAL 9001). Since there was no distributor in my area I was able to buy directly from Modern Aire, and they didn't really have an upcharge for the custom color (I think I got a better price ordering directly from Modern Aire). Vent-a-Hood will also match to RAL colors, but definitely with an upcharge. I don't know if ModernAire makes their own blowers or not.....

Good lookin' range!

Like mccall I washed all oven sides before lighting the first time. No problems.

On a 48 inch range with griddle can anyone recommend a BTU layout. We are about to order such a range and are wondering if the 22k burners generate too much heat for a domestic kitchen.
