Speed Oven Questions

I am considering a speed oven, built in above a regular oven, to use as a 2nd oven when needed.

A few questions for those that have/use these:

-is there anything that can be done in a speed oven that can't be done in a conventional oven (besides faster)?

-What are the benefits, if any, besides faster?

-is it true that the microwave wears out faster in a speed oven? Apparently, GE advantuim puts this info in their manual.

I don't have small kids and there's usually not a need to cook things super fast. Microwave/convection units are a lot less expensive than speed ovens. I'm wondering whether it's worth it if all you get is faster cook time.

Faster is a big part of what's nice about a speed oven, but its not just that.

Combination modes combine regular heat with microwave cooking; this expands the range of things you might cook using microwaves, so its different from microwaving alone and not just faster than conventional baking.

Its handy to have a second oven available when the other is being used for something else. Since most smaller ovens pre-heat faster than regular ones, even on regular settings (bake, convection bake, etc.), you may want to have these ovens be different sizes. You could consider a steam oven for your second oven, since that can do some things more easily than a regular oven (even here, you can mimic a steam oven by adding water). Of course, what's best for you depends a lot on what you want to cook.

As I understand it, people don't like microwave/convection ovens as much as speed ovens; not sure why (I don't have one), though they tend to be cheaper. Also not sure about the microwave wearing out faster, or if its just that the microwave part wears out before a speed oven's other functions do.

We will probably install a speed oven when we redo the kitchen this spring. Appliances are being relocated and the Miele speedoven fits the best in what we are planning. We have had an OTR convection/microwave for 15 years and find it very useful.The drawback was the length of time to preheat the oven for convection baking. Since the new range will have a large oven a second smaller oven is needed for a lot of everyday task. The Miele can bake, broil, convection, and microwave. Being 220v the preheat time is supposedly very short (350 in 4-5 minutes). Not sure that is right, but a lot faster than regular OTR combination. In our case the size and all modes of cooking hopefully will outweigh the expense. The fold down door was also a feature that works in our situation. No matter which oven you choose a 220v circuit is the way to go. The main difference in a speedoven versus regular is the microwave feature and the fact that you are heating a much smaller space so preheating with 220v is very fast.

Kind of puts the parts-and-service issue in perspective.... Smeg obviously trying to crack the US market now; whether they'll succeed we don't know. As for the aforementioned Smeg dishwashers rebranded as GE (and later DCS), that's how Bosch and LG got started in the US too. Bosch entered the US market in the '90s with only three products (all high-end dishwashers) and we all know what happened since. LG used to just rebrand their microwave ovens for others (and sell a few themselves under the Goldstar brand); it took less than a decade for them to become a major contender in all appliance product categories. Samsung didn't sell any major appliances here until about a decade ago under their own name. Meanwhile, several once-big US manufacturers have disappeared or been swallowed by bigger fish.

We had a combo unit, and one did experience an early demise. We were a little annoyed with the extra expense of buying another combo unit however what we discovered is that would have been a deal compared to what actually happened. Nothing on the market at that time would fit the cabinet we had, so we needed to replace that tall cabinet. Matching existing cabinetry is difficult, and we were getting no help there. In the end, the dead appliance morphed into a complete kitchen remodel. This time, we're doing our ovens as separate units, and we're making sure that the oven stack is made with separate components, so that they could be unassembled and remade in another size. What we had before was one tall cabinet, floor to ceiling, that was impossible to alter without destroying it because of the way it was constructed.

Hi Robert, yes, a little. I had a technician come out. it's fine, it's just not a full speed oven. So, you have to work a few things out by trial and error. For example, I do a baked potato on a beef setting now and it works just fine. he explained to me to go by density. so I write it down in a book that I keep near the oven for reference. that part is disappointing for me for sure, but I don't use the speed functions that often to be frank. It looks good, matches the oven, the microwave part of it works really well, and when I need the few things done speed wise, it's a bit trial and error, but we get there!

I currently have a Miele speed oven, however, the bake function stopped working some time ago and after $500 of repair costs without fixing the problem I now have a very expensive toaster oven (broil function works), and microwave (which is not it's best feature - my $150 Panasonic microwave is a better microwave). Up until it stopped working, I really liked the Miele and used it almost exclusively instead of my larger 30" oven. I need to replace it and am considering either the Bosch or the Wolf 24" (can't bring myself to get another Miele because of the aforementioned issue). As to the question about installing under the counter -- that is where I have mine and I would say the only drawback is that you need to bend down to see the control panel properly. I have it installed behind where I have my cooktop (induction), so it is convenient to use when cooking on the stove. As to the question of overkill -- yes, probably. Surely the steam oven on the Thermador will sort of do the same thing (except for microwaving) that the speed oven can do? That said, the difference in cost between the Thermador microwave and the Bosch speed oven is negligible and you would get regular oven capabilities along with a microwave. Also, the speed oven has a larger internal capacity (the Miele can fit a 9 x 13 pan) than I've seen in any steam oven, so that may be of interest. Good Luck!

We are thinking the same thing (speed oven) and larger, inexpensive regular oven for the few times we would need it. Also thinking Miele, or advantium. The subject has been covered in other threads, but if anybody has new insight on this choice I'd love to hear it. I'm thinking the master chef Miele would work best for me. Also considering pairing it with the Miele microwave for those times where microwave is needed when the oven is in use. Not much talk on this forum about the Miele micro wave. Anybody have any experience?
