Bathroom a design departure from the rest of the house?

We are in the process of finalizing plans for an upstairs renovation that includes adding a second bathroom to our house. We are considering this a "master bathroom" although it will not be attached to a bedroom, rather have common access through a hall.

We live in a small cottage and I'd say the overriding style in the house is fairly beachy and casual. I'm not a huge fan of modern decor, except in a bathroom. I love clean-lined spalike bathrooms devoid of clutter.

At this point I'm leaning toward a very modern bathroom with a glass shower surround, maybe bamboo cabinetry, modern tiles and fixtures, etc. I'll be the first to admit that has basically nothing to do with what is going on in the rest of our house.

I know rooms are supposed to "flow," especially in small houses, but part of me is inclined to say "it's my house, I'll do what I want" but at the same time I don't want to regret these design decisions and be wanting to redo the bathroom 10 years down the road.

Resale is not a factor because I hope to live in this house until the day I die.

Hi wi-sailorgirl.

Our master bathroom is quite modern and clean-lined (you commented on our vanity in another thread). The rest of the house leans a little more towards cottage-y. The exterior is (will be!) very new England-y beachy shingles, varnished craftsman fir door, onion-glass lamps. The kitchen we just did has natural-cherry shaker cabinets, marble counters, and white subway tile backsplash. The house has hardwood floors, white trim, and shaker-style 5-panel doors. So, our master bathroom is significantly more modern than the house's permanent fixtures.

However... our furniture and lighting contains a lot of mid-century modern stuff, so there is a bit of continuity there.

Another thing: although the bones of the bathroom are modern, we kept some cottagey things, like we continued the divided-light windows that the rest of the house has. And we continued the old-fashioned 2-part baseboard that the rest of the house has. I also added some things to soften the straight-edged modern, like a framed drawing and a soft, floral-embroidered panel as a window treatment.

I defintely think you can blend cottage and modern successfully! Especially if its what YOU really want.

If resale isn't an issue - do what you want. Who knows in 10 years perhaps you've redone your entire house to match the bathroom :)

julies-thanks for the link. That is very helpful. I'm still not sure about the direction the room is heading. I like it as a whole but I really think I wanted "cooler" feeling space. The blue/grays/whites just appeal to me but maybe it's because everything else in the house is a warmer tone. I finally got the original accent tile I was looking at when I was leaning towards the blue pearl counter tops. I'll post that tonight just for reference.

Well...here's a rather different idea. It's based on: --small kids who grow to be adolescents; --empty nesters using the house when the kids have left; --attempting to sell the house when it's time to downsize Build two, separate, hall oriented bathrooms, each with a space with two lavatories, and another space with a WC and tub/shower. Don't forget a linen closet for each.

Personally, I don’t see any problem with having a walk in closet off of master bath. In fact, I like the idea... super convenient. As long as it is within your area’s building code guidelines, I don’t see why it would be an issue, or why you would feel you need validation for this idea (?). People take entire rooms of their existing houses to convert to custom closets, and most folks don’t view that as being odd. I don’t view it as being odd either, btw; and even if I did view it as being odd, it wouldn’t really be my business - since it’s not my house. As far as ‘’making things easier‘’ for your husband goes, though - I hope these extra modifications do work the way you intend, and that he doesn't just forego the closet - and throw his stuff on the bathroom floor!

"Must have is 2 vanities, toilet closet, tub and separate shower. Vanity and toilet closet are marriage peace makers." My idea kept both vanities. I simply suggested switching the location of the vanity with the tub on that left wall. If you must have full walls and a door for the toilet, you must. I'm not a bath designer so don't know the minimum footprint required for a water closet. Did I read correctly that your husband stores clothes in his bathroom vanity drawers? Does the bedroom lack clothes storage? Without changing the location or size of any element, I'm not sure how many different layouts the designer could have proposed.
