Bathroom a design departure from the rest of the house?
Comments (2)Hi wi-sailorgirl. Our master bathroom is quite modern and clean-lined (you commented on our vanity in another thread). The rest of the house leans a little more towards cottage-y. The exterior is (will be!) very new England-y beachy shingles, varnished craftsman fir door, onion-glass lamps. The kitchen we just did has natural-cherry shaker cabinets, marble counters, and white subway tile backsplash. The house has hardwood floors, white trim, and shaker-style 5-panel doors. So, our master bathroom is significantly more modern than the house's permanent fixtures. However... our furniture and lighting contains a lot of mid-century modern stuff, so there is a bit of continuity there. Another thing: although the bones of the bathroom are modern, we kept some cottagey things, like we continued the divided-light windows that the rest of the house has. And we continued the old-fashioned 2-part baseboard that the rest of the house has. I also added some things to soften the straight-edged modern, like a framed drawing and a soft, floral-embroidered panel as a window treatment. I defintely think you can blend cottage and modern successfully! Especially if its what YOU really want....See MoreBathroom design..2 pics from this..to this??
Comments (10)Thanks callaloo and downtowner for responding...I too worried about the closets being so far away from the bedroom...however, I was just trying to keep the plumbing in the same general location. Both bedrooms have two windows in them so they both get about the same amount of light right now. The bedroom on the left has awkward wall (bottom of photo) where there is a recessed closet now that makes it difficult to plan a bedroom around...there's no place to put a bed without craming it against a wall...but I need to look at at that option again... I am working on another plan that puts the closet where the bathroom is now. It is a series of compromises. If I put the closet closer, I will not gain much more closet space than we have now, and we need more closet space. So more closet space may result in a closet that is farther away. Also, the cost of totally relocating the bath to one bedroom or the other may dictate whether or not that is a possibility. I think I'm going to come up with two final plans, one with the closet close to the bedroom and one that keeps most of the plumbing in place, resulting in the closet farther away. That way, I have an option for each and decide after I get estimates for both. I would like to keep the bedroom on the right as our master bedroom as it is in the back of the house and much more private. The bedroom on the left faces the street and is directly across from a neighbor and not very private and a bit nosier... Sometime later today or tonight I will post "option 3" and that will have the closet in the middle and the bath on the left... Just a thought...what would you do...put your bedroom or your bath on the most private side of the house? We automatically think our bedroom.......See MoreX-post from bathrooms- designer layout, talk me down!
Comments (10)Omg mdln, I love love love that. Love. I don't think the designers looked outside too much as what they thought would be a 5 ft vanity would actually be a 4 ft vanity due to the jut out. I'll have to take a look outside and some measurements. Thank you for this pic! bevelyfla- we currently walk through the br to get to the closet, it's all good here. As robo said of her area, it's typical for this area as well. Thanks for the other layout idea. crl-I agree with having the shower a bit further away as to not wake up the other one. rockybird- we have to tape it out to see exactly how we will be able to move in the space. I don't want it to be tight considering it is such a large area. Thanks palimpsest! Great tweaking!...See More6x10'6" bathroom design
Comments (10)Our bathroom is similarly-sized - about 6' x 10' with the shower and toilet in the same locations as shown in the picture above (we wanted to move the toilet and enlarge the bathroom, but couldn't due to construction of building and location of stack). The difference in ours is that the entrance is to the left of the toilet (where the vanity is in the last picture) and the 60" two-sink vanity is directly across from that (opposite where you show it) (between the vanity and the shower is where our towel hooks are). Based on my experience, I will say that the shower at 32" plus the curb is a fine size for one person, the toilet is a little cramped (and we have nothing to the left but open space). I would definitely think two sinks plus toilet plus the shower all in a row will be cramped. Without a floor plan I can't tell - is there any way to relocate the door and put the vanity on the opposite wall? An alternative would be the kind of vanity that has two integrated sinks (but little storage on the countertop) in 48"?...See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
