After having seen all your beautiful pics, I'm ashamed by my Valentines decorations.

However, here in Belgium, we currently focus on Carnival - which lasts for some weeks - and while I've been shopping for Valentines (my son and I are not particularly interested on Carnival because we've been living in Brussels for too many years and Brussels doesn't celebrate Carnival), I've found almost NOTHING related to Valentine's day.

Except: a pack of two red coffee mugs and a horrible teddy bear (5 cm height) and some packs of 5 heart-shaped balloons for a so expensive price that I'm not wondering why nobody bought them!

Well, I finally have been surprised when I found a pack of small red velvet hearts and another one filled with red fabric petals. I bought both of them and I created my valentines table setting by scattering them on the center of the table, added two red candles and putted some small hearts in a crystal candy box.

Tonight, I've been cooking (wow!) a recipe that I published on my site in order to have a picture to add to the site.

Here are the two pics I have.

Well, it's not as beautiful as your pictures but that's all I've done since it's almost impossible to find Valentines decorations at this time.

I presume that I'll have more chance with Easter deco.

My Valentines Shrimps : shrimps, sliced onions, oil, tomato puree, cream, grated emmenthal, salt, pepper and... amaretto ;-)

Prosperity, you've done very good. Anything red can be used, some red silk roses or any red flower, red candles (which you did) I even used a xmas candle ring that I got on clearance for my centerpiece for Valentines day.

Valentines here really plays up the "gift" giving aspect of the holiday, so kind of limited here to as far as decor.

Thanks so much for sharing with us, I bet it makes you happy when you wake up & see it all decorated!!!

You did a very pretty table for Valentine's, especially with items being so difficult to find. I imagine you will be thinking more about holiday decorating now that you have found this site.

Is emmenthal a cheese perhaps? I've not heard of it before. I love shrimp--in fact we are having shrimp with linguine for dinner tonight.

Yachter, I love Judith's idea using the cabbage plates~even if they had the larger plates, it might be too much of the yellow. The green would be a great contrast. You could get the dip/chip plate and use it for veggies or fruit. I have one, and use three or four different veggies and a wonderful dill dip or fruit with a great yogurt dip. Like Judith said, 'think outside the box'. Just because it looks like a dog, and barks like a dog, doesn't mean it is a dog! Could be a cat in costume~you get my 'drift.LOL And speaking of dogs,as that sure doesn't look like a mask Judith,Toby is a little doll!I can understand 'the stinker' part, but we love them anyway. I am absolutely IN LOVE with the pink/silver/white table setting! Macy's had dishes that were about the same color,with a co-ordinating floral~it was love at first sight for me! My pink dishes are very similiar with the beading, but octagon in shape. Best .99 cent values I ever bought! The glasswear looks like the old Fostoria my Mom used to have. I see a lot of it, not too badly priced in antique stores~just one more thing I would like to have.LOL Will check out the website~i'm sure it's not too 'shabby' coming from you, Judith!LOL Kathleen,just an FYI for ya, BL has dresser trays and cheap cheap cheap! They might come with a couple of tchotkes,but you can ditch those. Or try a thrift store, or consider a wall mirror. The star plates sound very uinique. Christams would also be a great time to use them,too! Like Sandi said, we're all starting to think alike.LOL patty_cakes

I am retired also, at the early age of 57 after 28 years working on a Navy base. It was hard to do because you give up that salary but it was the most exciting thing I think I have ever done. After 7 months it is still hard to believe that I do not have to get up and go to work every morning. I remember being a stay at home mom for many years and it was hard. You have to be housekeeper, cook, chauffer (sp?), teacher, laundress, etc., etc., etc. But remember how you got paid??? With those big eyes filled with love and those sloppy kisses? And that was just from the hubby - LOL. I worked at a daycare so I could have some spending money and have my kids with me and then after they started school I went to work full time. I have never liked being away from my children. I think there comes a time when you have to put everything on a scale - mine was - work at a job I was getting bored with and receive a very nice salary or on the other side, spend time with my husband, who is ten years my senior, and enjoy life while we can and see my grandkids more often. You guessed it, work did not stand a chance. OK, I am talkative this morning, better start getting some work around the house done.

Luvs, I took the V-day decs off my kitchen table Thursday, but just put my pig bowl back on it. I love my pig bowl, but the table looks so empty. I think I'm going to at least do a St Paddy Centerpiece just for the center of the table this week and then the night before I can set the whole table. I don't have as much for St Paddy's as I do V-day and won't be buying anything else this year. :~( Minnie, Whatever you decide on please post a pic for us. It all sounds very pretty. Purplemoon, DS just brought my empty V-day boxes up Saturday afternoon so I still don't have everything packed up. I'm always behind and I have to look closely at every ornament that was bought this year when I take them down just to admire them one more time. I can't believe I missed the Michael's coupon this week. It's probably a good thing though. ;~) Yachter, Your table is very pretty. It gives a promise of the coming of spring. Are your wine glasses purplish? They are beautiful. And you already have some green on your table so you could add a few Irish things and be ready for St Paddy's Day. Smart thinking!

Luvs, The tree is really a little tree. 20 years ago we had a store that opened right after Thanksgiving and closed the first week in January. They sold nothing but Christmas items and were, to me, kind of expensive. They had 2 of those trees for $40 each. I went in the day after Christmas with my Christmas money and bought and bought and bought at 50% off, mostly crystal for my real tree. I only bought 1 tree though and I have always wished I had bought both of them. It used to be very hard to find ornaments for the different holidays to use on the tree, but it is easy now. The candelabrum was a Christmas gift to me 36 years ago and I've always used it someplace in my house. It's really nothing expensive. Tangypsy, Thank you. I have always loved decorating for the holidays and now that Judith has shared her stacking plates and table vignettes it makes it much more fun. I still have quite a bit to buy to finish my table, but it's a start.

Hi :)

Yes, you're right, Emmenthal is French cheese (in fact it's some cheaper type of Gruyer and its taste is less strong than Gruyer and it pleases to people who do not like the taste of this cheese).

Hoooooooo! Since I discovered this site, I spent a lot of time on shopping and decorating for holidays. My son didn't recognize me, hahaha!

I always loved home improvement but didn't do anything, now, I act; and that is what surprised my son.

Yachter, I have to say that I also re-used my Christmas candles for Valentine. I was really disappointed for not having found some more decorating items. Just hope that next week they'll sell some more.

And, yes, it's really agreeable to enter the dining room and see how lovely my table is with these petals and hearts. My friends tell me that I'm crazy about this holiday stuff but they also found it beautiful ;-)

BTW, Luvs, your dinner menu inspired me: will cook shrimps and pasta tonight, lol!

Prosperity - you did a great job with what you had. Most of my stuff was pulled from Christmas decorations. I did manage to get the heart shaped ornaments from Micheals but everything else was Christmas. For next year you could make hearts from any red material - fuse two different red print/plain fabrics together and cut out heart shapes. I am going to do that for coasters and then cut smaller hearts for a heart garland. Just let your imagination go and pick up inspiration from these other great gals.....

Thank you so much Lynn for having given me this great idea! I'll do it for next year, for sure but maybe I could try to change their shapes to suit the... Easter deco next month (bells, bunnies, lambs, chicks...!!!

Yes, Kathie, I've access to so many different chocolates that it's hard to choose one and not buy all of them!

At this moment, we already find lots of Easter chocolates: eggs, bunnies, bells, etc. I'll try to have some pics from our nice (and delicious) specialities (I'm wondering if we are authorized to take pics in stores...)

Don't get yourself arrested, or reprimanded by security, Prosperity, for having the decorating bug! :)

Your decorations made me smile, and your story of how difficult it is to find Valentine's things, even more so. It's fascinating to learn more about what you experience in Belgium. And I love that the board is inspiring you, even over the distance.

There's just something a bit poetic about that.

I think you did quite well with what you have, the red candles and petals definately do say romance, and relaxation, and the food you made sounds yummy, the perfect combination...lovely romantic table and good food, great company, what more could you want! Happy Valentines day!

Happy Valentine's Day Prosperity, your table looks lovely. Red and/or pink decorations is all it takes. You can probably get some ideas for different holiday decorations by looking at things on eBay. You can also make your own, cut out some hearts from red felt; fancy them up with buttons, beads, sequence, ribbons, lace, etc. For other holidays or celebrations as you might call them, just use your imagination and go for it. Hey, if you like it, that's all that matters, Right!!!

I bet some of your friends will soon be following you in decorating when they see what beautiful creations you have made.

I'm just starting to decorate for holidays since I found so many great ideas here... and I'm so happy to receive so many and nice ideas on how to create my own decorations that I will save them on my computer and will try to make them.

Just have to buy a right hand ; which is something I've never found in our stores but I'll do my best to work with my two left hands ;-)
