Every time I hear someone advocating the setting string on fire method of cutting bottles, I cringe. PLEASE don't do this. Everyone I've talked to who has actually tried it (as opposed to just reading about it) says it doesn't work. It breaks the bottle into ragged shards. In addition, breathing glass dust from dry sanding the cut edge is very harmful. I cut bottles for craft projects, and it is a lot harder than you would think. If you are seriously interested, do some online research first. There are tons of different cutters and techniques that are well documented on YouTube and the like. Check out the right way to do it before setting fire to string in your kitchen!
