Do your friends share your interests?

After reading purplemoon's post on the "fellow dish addicts' thread, I thought this might be a good topic for discussion~it *still* pertains to to holidays and decorating, right?

Do most of you have at least one friend who shares your interest in holiday/everyday tables settings(dishes), collecting, decorating, etc.? I feel very fortunate to have 2 friends who share my interest, and also 2 DD's who are 'showing the signs'. LOL ;o)

That is a good question, Patty Cakes, I never really thought about it as so many of my friends and family are supportive of my "hobby" and like to see what tablescapes, etc. I come up with but actually, none of them share the passion. My mother is probably the one who did "get me started" with her interest in dishes and a few simple table settings but I have taken it MUCH FURTHER!!

And maybe I don't think about it so much because after finding this forum, I have my invisible friends who are THE BEST and I can share all my finds, treasures and creations with them!

My mother in law shares my love of all things Christmas. We now have a yearly, unspoken, tree decorating competition :) She won big this year with her red and silver tree (I'll try to post photos later). Neither of us has a formal dining room but we both love table settings. Other than her, and you all here, I really don't have anyone that shares my obsessions.

I am really sorry if I hurted anyone on the forum. The least I wanted to do is to advertise myself. The reason is rather educational. I have seen some thoughts on this forum on wedding video DOs and DON'Ts. It may help me to work on my educational project, and any respond will be much appreciated.

major (complete redesign) - taking down 2 walls, 1 load bearing, modifying patio slider to 1 patio french, replacing casement window, new floors and refinish LR and DR and stairs, colonnade in entryway, new cabinets and ss ct, new fridge. House is 40 years old. Approx dimensions 10.5x ~10 (~12' on one side, Planning/designing ~3 years - I started prepping DH 3 years ago, it took him that long to get used to the idea. I got my first plan back from a Friend's Lumber kitchen design in 8/08. It took me another attempt (at HD this time) and 5 months to come up with a design that I could live with. I already had a good idea of the cabinet style, color, and wood and CT, floors, etc. - that was the easy part! It was the floor plan that was the hard part of the design. I wasn't replacing any appliance except fridge, and I knew I wanted CD, FD (but that was hard to decide on which one). Ok, we are in the middle of it right now, so I don't have the times for the rest, but I can tell you what has been done and the plan for the rest - we'll see how close we are. You said from when you spent your first $500 or more: 5/15/09 - gave deposit on cabinets, I believe order was placed on 5/18. Several days later, received cabinet due date of 6/24. 6/11/09 - Demo begins - kitchen gutted (left sink, dw, fridge, and range for the weekend), and one wall removed - started anchor for load-bearing wall.(first check to GC) 6/12/09 - removed the rest of load bearing wall and finished supports. 6/15/09 - advance plumbing to remove sink cab, removed floor and got ready for electrical. I now only have a sink and a fridge. 6/16/09 - remove walls for colonnade, rough electrical 6/17/09 - rough electrical 6/18/09 - blue board ceilings 6/19/09 - complete blue boarding ceilings and walls (2nd check) Plans for the next few weeks: 6/22/09 - plasterers 6/23/09 - drying 6/24/09 - floor 6/25/09 - 6/29/09 - install cabinets (no weekend) 6/30/09 - templating for CT 7/1/09 - install bb CT 7/2/09 - finish electrical 7/6/09 - finish electrical 7/7 -9/09 - floors 7/10/09 - install countertops (note: I am on vacation from 6/27 - 7/11, so I am not as concerned that we still do not have a kitchen) 7/13/09 - install fridge, dw, disp., heat, gas, etc. 7/14/09 - hardware 7/15 - 17/09 - miscellaneous There's some other tasks that haven't been accouted for that I assume will be done in between other tasks or as they are waiting on something else, like: -switching my mud room door to swing to the right instead of left. -installing patio door and casement window - door is not due in until 6/30 at earliest, and window is a week later. -finishing colonnades -priming You might notice that we aren't having a backsplash. I am hoping for 7/17, but I wouldn't be surprised at 7/24 at all, but that's 6 weeks (from demo) with a holiday in there, so that's pretty good. Lynne

Thanks for all the kind words. I still look at it in disbelief that it came together so well. Kompy,yeah, the title was tongue-in-cheek, because I was warned about using friends as contractors, but I knew these guys and their work ethic, so I wasn't worried. Cabinets are clear maple with a natural finish, from a local custom maker in Salt Lake, Mt Tech cabinets. Countertops are Maron Cohiba granite. They almost read as black from a distance, but are deep brown and scattered with gold flecks, small fractures, large flakes, etc. Really have a lot of depth. Backsplash is from Daltile, from the Urban Metals collection, UM01. It's a running brick pattern with pewter grout. It's kind of weird, not really tile, almost a composite substrate with a thin laminate of shiny material that also has specks & color. Hard to describe. The whole thing was really a collaboration with input from a number of different people. I had a rough idea of what I wanted, and had spent a lot of time talking about it with Dale & Damion, my friends who were the contractors. Dale loves to do the "Craftsman" style woodworking, so a modernized version of that style was the base. The original kitchen was cut in half by a bank of cabinets that totally cut off the "dining" area, with the original stove in that section, and the old sink where the range is now. I really wanted to open up the kitchen and join all that space, so that also was one of the primary design criteria. From there, things just developed, and as we went along, I decided that I'm only going to do this once, and I wanted to do it right, and do justice to the beautiful woodworking that the guys were doing. I was also fortunate to meet and enlist the services of a great designer, Carrie Snyder of Avatar Design in Salt Lake. Carrie was just awesome at coming in at crucial moments to make sure things worked together. She did the lighting plan, helped me choose the countetop material, chose the backsplash, and all of the interior wall colors. The walls are Pratt & Lambert "Briarwood", with accent walls of "Clove Dust", and some "Chalk Grey", with the same Chalk Grey ceilings. All of the woodwork was laboriously hand sanded, then shot with sanding sealer, sanded again, then shot with three coats of lacquer. One of the details that you cant' see in the photos is that the baseboard is 5/8" thick, the jamb legs 3/4" thick, then the frieze boards on top step out another 1/8" to 1", so there is a three dimensional step out on the trim, which was all milled in my garage. Anyway, I hope I've answered some of your questions without prattling on too much like a proud papa. If you could have seen what this house looked like before, you would not believe it. I bought the house in 1988, and the entire thing (including bathrooms!!) was carpeted with a short blue-green industrial looking carpet, all walls were the same battleship grey, (it was listed as a "Newport Contemporary Solarium") The transformation has been awesome to watch. This past Monday I got my final inspection, and was able to start moving back upstairs after spending the last 6 months in my dungeon of a basement with my two Bengal cats, (hence the screen name). I don't have any more photos at the moment, but would love to share some of the rest of the house when I get back home from work in 2 weeks. Thanks again for looking & listening! I got a lot of great information from the folks on this forum, so if there is anything that I may be able to contribute, just ask. BTW, the range is a Blue Star, 36" RNB with charbroiler. I haven't really had the chance to cook on it yet, but the installation was relatively painless (it's heavy!), and all burners, ignitors, broiler, etc worked perfectly first time.

Is unfortunate that the best long/repeat blooming vines seem to also often be among the most aggressive. Coral honeysuckle seems like a great alternative - very pretty this time of year and does repeat a bit for us throughout the growing season. Also appreciate the somewhat different look it gets throughout the year being semi-evergeen in north Texas. Crossvine and Carolina Jessamine are native evergreen spring bloomers that behave themselves around our neighborhood. All parts of jessamine are toxic, which rules it out for some folks/locations. We've not had problems with crossvine spreading, but it does try to use all its space; could become a lot of vine for your narrow arbor in 5 or 6 years. Some clemantis varieties are good possibilities not always considered in Texas. We coddled our big box 'Jackmanii' vine for years, and it hated us for it. Divided and moved the roots when the tree it had been growing on was taken down. Found it is MUCH happier in full sun living off the weekly (when needed) lawn watering. The newer native hybrids are also nice (and tough), though don't have the large flowers. Slower covering than others since can take a couple years to get established.

Not really, but I notice two of my friends "trying" out some on their own. The friends we spent New Years with had the table set with a pretty tablecloth & also matching napkins.

She works long hours & doesn't really have time, but I notice it is rubbing off on her a little! LOL

Another friends daughter tried some vignettes in their entertainment center for xmas & she sent me pics, so I think some of it is rubbing off on some of my friends!

Most of the others say it looks like too much work! Not everyone sees it as a hobby to enjoy, so glad we have this forum where we all can share our interest!

None of my family or friends living here do, they appreciate it and compliment me on it but think I'm crazy for putting so much time and energy into it.
I got the decorating gene from my Mom - she had such talent. I often think of her when I decorate and do it for the both of us. I know she still knows what I'm up to...:)

None of my friends and family really share my interest in tablesetting - thats why I love this forum so I can talk to people who understand this. My mom got me started on some of my other interests like sewing, crochet etc and some of my decorating/embroidery interest has rubbed off on my sister.

Its interesting that most of us seem to be in the same boat as far as family or visible friends go. It sure is a good thing we found each other here!

I'm not sure how many of you discovered new interests as I did, or were already dishaholics and super holiday decorators. But this place literally changed my Life in those respects! I find it kind of funny that after turning 60, I got hooked on this dish and decor stuff like I did. But perhaps it was being the "right time, right place". Place being here obviously. A couple of years ago, when the Fibro worsened so much and I had to cut back on my dog showing, I sure needed other interests. Besides antiquing and Michaels, LOL. I use to do a lot of craft stuff, but even that has been put on hold. (I didn't mean to make my dog buddies sound like they had no other interests, all of them have busy and very varied lives. Just none are interested in dishes, or holiday decor beyond the 'normal') LOL. So the time I spent with them, was always dog-oriented entirely. Stumbling onto this place, thru those addictive stacked plates of Judith's, caused a major change in me tho. All for the better. Suddenly, not only do I have new interests, I have so many new friends! I can come here any time of day or night and have fun, or relax, or even feel like I still have an interesting Life. I'm no longer isolated (due to being housebound so often with the Fibro pain). Plus I discovered thrift shops and dollar stores, and fun shopping like that. Its as if a whole new world got opened up for me just when I needed it.
I joke about you being my Invisible Friends, but the connection I feel with you makes me often forget we haven't met in Real Life. You are MORE visible than my local friends now! I certainly spend most of my time with you, LOL. In all seriousness, I don't know what I'd do without you (and my Garden Junk buddies, some who are here too). So I guess I can answer Patty's question with a resounding YES, my friends DO share my interests!

My daughter is my partner in crime....everyone else thinks we are nut cases!!
I HAVE noticed that DH pays a bit more attention to dishes now, and has been known to locate one of our patterns at garage sales. I've been quite impressed!!!!

Most of my family (Mom,both daughters,sister,& aunt are also dish nuts) My best friend living here is just begining to get into dish collecting. She also helps me with decorating for fundrasing table.

Fortunately, we're in a dinner group and all 4 couple DO share our love of dining and all set nice tables for our dinners.

Besides that group we have some couple friends who we get together with on a regular basis for dinner. Some get more into it than others, but all DO put effort into their tablescapes.

My friend would be shocked if I told them I post on a message board about it though :-) That will remain "our" little secret. They'd have me commited for sure!!

I have two bestfriends. The artist's home is dropdead gorgeous, warm & inviting, but she doesn't get into decorating for the holidays too much and is totally not interested in tablescapes. I don't think she has more than two sets of dishes. The other, a home-ec teacher, has a lovely home and is VERY into decorating for every holiday. Her tablescapes are wonderful and put mine to shame. Since our families celebrate every holiday together, we're always talking about what we'll do for the next one. When we were young moms, we'd get together before every holiday and make decs for our homes. We have so many now, that we can't wait to get rid of some to our kids!
DD is only fourteen, but has inherited my passion for decorating. She sets the table most nights for dinner and loves to create new, daily tablescapes for us. She does a really good job, too. It's been fun to enjoy this with her.
