I'm trying to decide on a medicine cabinet, and there seem to be a very large selection of widths and heights. I'm re-doing a very small full bathroom. I'd prefer sconces on either side of the cabinet rather than a fixture over the cabinet. Right now, the center of the existing medicine cabinet is 16" from the corner, and I am not going to be able to place the sink much further from the wall than that. The current medicine cabinet is 16" wide, leaving 8" for a sconce. How much wider could I make the medicine cabinet and still have room for sconces, and not have it look too wide for the sink? And how tall should I make it? The ceilings are 9' high. There will also be a glass shelf above the sink and below the medicine cabinet.

Cans can be used for task lighting, they are placed close to the upper cab and over the counter. They don't throw shadows becuase the light is in front of you when you stand at the counter, not behind you, but they still highlight the upper cabinets and provide general walking light for the kitchen. I would think cans that follow the contours of the upper cabs would look better, myself, than "rows" of lights in a straight line, the same way that different depths of cabinets break up the straight lines of a kitchen and add interest. Ask to see photos of recessed lights here and see which you like better. I have seen both. Of coarse, I have also seen people do landscape lights in straights rows, and I don't like that, either. Are you replacing the floor tile completely? If not, you may have a problem. The current tile may end at the vanity edge. With the new mirror, be sure to use only water - no glass cleaner - to clean it. I know that with mine, using glass cleaner will void the warranty. Cleaners wicking up behind the glass is said to be the cause of the loss of silvering you see on the edges of mirrors. A spritz of water and a microfiber cloth does the trick. With so many designers insisting that you should not put two sinks in a 60" vanity, there must be more than a few to see. Just for grins, check out Wayfair, where you can do a search for a vanity that size, then specify one sink. See what is out there to buy online if you have not looked already. Once you have seen them, you can look for local distributors of that line if you do not like to purchase such large items online.

regarding your 2 nd question-our vanity in the master bath (part of an addition so it was being built) was custom -part of our agreement with the contractor. It helped a lot when they messed up the framing-and vanity had to become non-standard, narrower and all. If there were no mistakes-I'd still like the vanity, we had a great cabinet maker. But it was "a gift" from the contractor so to say, and since I chose wood that was quite expensive and cabinetmaker loved it too, -it was more expensive gift than the contractor was hoping to give)) Then it was additional headache in terms of sourcing slab, sinks, etc. We did save greatly on them btw-but in money, not in time. Our vanity is really long too. I wonder if we saved on a pre-made one. Other vanities (hall bath, powder room) are small(one is smallish, one is tiny) and we bought them second hand. Hall bath was the only space we didn't gut (sore thumb..but they recently remodeled so seemed wasteful) and to me didn't warrant anything particularly great. So it's a premade thing with some cultured material on top, I'm not sure what material . and we bought it for cheap on Craigslist. It is standard 36 inch as far as I remember. The powder room was carved out of some space and had to have a really tiny something inside, and I managed to find on Craigslist something that was custom made by somebody and the family decided to sell it afterwards. Had to be attached to the wall though so the contractor worked with some ironsmith to work out the solution. Didn't cost us anything-but was an additional work etc. So I guess it depends on a space, The more challenging the room/reno-custom might work better. If sizes are/get to be pretty standard-then obviously you risk much less ordering/buying premade. PS we didn't want electric oitlets in the custom made vanity, I don't even own a hair dryer. So it seemed like something we didn't really need.
