Medicine cabinet over vanity - recessed or surface mount?
Comments (4)If you wanted a deeper cabinet, you could recess and have some sticking out ;) too. A third option! I've had recessed in old bathroom and it was fine. I now have a new surface mounted one that just got put up this friday. I have an exterior wall in cold Iowa. It was made for me by my fab carpenter to go with an old Robern medicine cabinet mirror door I've had for 20 years (got it for free in an alley outside a design shop-she said "take it"). With the recessed and want to change the set in the future, you'd have to do major wall repair or find a cabinet that fits. But wouldn't that be unlikely? If I didn't like the protrusion, then recessed is what I'd do....See MoreCan we talk about Surface Mounted Medicine Cabinets?
Comments (7)I think, even though it is a weight bearing wall it can be recessed so long as wiring doesn't interfere. You need to frame it in with a header, much like a window in an outer wall. And depending on the wiring situation, if it isn't right across the centre, it maybe could be moved above or below the mirror opening. Just a thought. We are just re-doing our bathroom and had a surface mounted 36 inch medicine cabinet until now. We are gutted to the studs and found the vanity wall to be a 6 inch wall because the stack is in that wall. So our contractor just cut into the 2 x 6's part way (about 4 inches) and framed it In with a 2 x 4 header and frame. We just bought a 40 inch Kohler tri view cabinet. It has soft close doors and seems like a very nice one but it was not cheap. We didn't find many 40 inch tri view ones so chose to pay for the Kohler brand. It does have mirror inside and out and a sliding magnifying mirror inside the centre door, which might come in handy since the mirror will be farther away now with being inset....See MoreNeed medicine cabinet/lighting suggestions
Comments (15)We came accross your post and hope you don''t mind if we provide you some more information about our mirrored cabinets. The Integrated LED lighting in our medicine cabinets increases the volume of lighting llumination in a bathroom space especially, in the case of the Quadro. It is the quality of the LED used is what makes the difference. We use our own proprietary CRI plus 90 LED manufactured in our Swiss factory. We manufacture our own LED's in our cabinets based on our own specs in order to provide the most clear and vivid illumination where our medicinec cabinets can function to illuminate the vainty and marjority of the bathroom depending on the collection. So, the lighting we use in our mirrored cabinets especially, the Quadro you have pictured here in your post can be the main light source of a bathroom (depending the size of the bathroom). There is a misconception about the thin profile of our doors. They are 1/4" thick, but they are not delicate and do not chip nor will they desilver. We manufacture our doors with a thinner profile for a more seamless and less bulky appearance, but our doors weigh exactly the same as a thicker door. The best analogy we can use is compare a $500.00 thicker framed bike with a $3000.00+ high-end competive bike used by bike racers. If you want to surface or semi-recess the medicine cabinet vs. recess mount it, we have side mirror kits so, the edge on the side will look polished and finished. We also offer a 5 year warranty on all of our products. Thank you for your comments about our medicince cabinets. We are are honoured. What do I do?
Comments (23)There is no contractor worth a damn who'd recommend you attempt to JAM a finished cabinet with a 15 inch drawers and two 27" sink bases, between two very UN forgiving walls as I guarantee you will not get it in there Seriously... The OP asked for a 69" vanity. If three cabinets adding to 69" will not fit then no other 69" vanity is going to fit. Furthermore, they noted that they have a 69" vanity now... Do you think the walls were built around the vanity? If a 69" vanity currently fits, then it will fit again. People change sizes over time, but the good ole' inch stays the same year after year. 63", 69" and 75" are fairly common sizes for two sinks with a drawer stack in the middle, which have been made as separate cabinets for like 40 years now and still are. Telling the OP to order something smaller because you don't know for sure that a 69" will fit, is just bad advice. Feel free to explain the concern with ordering a vanity to fit exactly between two walls and ask the OP to ensure the entire area is at least 69", there is actually a 50% probability that the walls are out the other way and 69" is the choke point. You are just making up measurements you don't have... ETA: I am not 100% this is still the same, but my 15 year old vanity cabinets still have it so... Framed vanity cabinets always had a 3/8" overlap on the unfinished side. So the face frame is 27" but the box it frames is only 26.25" if both sides are unfinished. This was designed to give you wiggle room in tight spaces. Since frameless is so much more popular I am not sure all manufacturers still do that, but I suspect many do....See MoreRelated Professionals
