4 holes in side are for attachment to cabinetry with the provided stainless screws and bushings.

Whether or not it's flush with your cabinets will depend on their size? How deep is your opening?

Special req: they supply hose has a box on the end of it that needs to be oriented one of two ways. Pref.is to have the hump of the box pointing upward, and alternately the box needs to orient straight up and down. This is shown in the install manual.

It is a standard cabinet opening. Probably 24".

However, my builder said the screw goes on the side trim piece. I will post back again tomorrow to let people know what the plumber did. I don't think they have ever installed a Miele before. I will post pictures!

If they have already installed it, then I won't know if they put the hose properly in the back. Is there a way for me to know if they did it properly? What is the symptom if they did not do that properly?

I installed mine myself...mine is completely flush with other cabinets...
He must cut a big cutout for the 2 flexible hoses(drain and supply) and power cord into the adjacent cabinet. The supply water hose has a hard "plastic box" on the end that should be installed vertically . The flexible hose from your water supply needs to come down vertically to this as there are electronics inside this plastic box that sense if there is a leak. The electrical cable must be connected to an electrical box...make sure he doesn't cut off the cable end.
The panel itself connects to a "frame"(there are about 10 screws or so that screw into your cabinet in the back of the cabinet front) that slides into the dishwasher front loosely. There are four torx screws on the side of the dishwaher(2 on each side) that are hidden from view(visible when you open up the dishwasher). Basically when the panel and subframe are attached to the front of the dishwasher, these 4 screws pull pull the frame/cabinet in and lock the cabinet front to the dishwasher.

With the door open, where do I screw into the side? It is hollow. Should the builder put wood support there for me to screw in the sides.

However, I don't want to install it sticking out. So, do I ask the builder to put wood reinforcements on both sides of the cabinet so that I can screw in the dishwasher after pushing it in deeper.

Also, I did not take a picture of this, but there is a hole at the top of the sink cabinet and the plumber and pulled the two hoses from the dish washer up over to the sink cabinet. Should he put holes at the bottom and then send the hoses that way?

yes, and ideally they will be the same species and stain color as the rest of the doors/faceframes.

Hole in top of sink cab is fine for drain hose, and is OK for supply as log as it will reach the shutoff it is to attach to.

Miele now connects to the side panels with those screws...I was unprepared for that myself as most dishwashers either have some sort of mechanism at the side or on top.
However, although there was a bit of space to the sides, I didnt have to install any additional wood spacers to the sides but it did pull the side cabinets in slightly to the dishwasher.
The top hole that he has the dishwasher drain pipe, I assume, is a sort of pressure valve. Apparantly its code in some areas in the US(not here in Canada where i am).
The code is very old from what I have read and meant for a time when the pressure of the dishwashers was much less...unfortunately Ive read quite a few people having problems with this pressure valve due to the very high pressures the dishwasher creates...Miele does not recommend them but if you have to have them for code, you have to have them...

The drama continues. This morning I made the builder understand that the dishwasher has to be flush. The cabinet guy came and put the necessary wood support to the sides so that the dishwasher can be pushed in enough to be flush and then still be screwed in on the sides.

I had to go to work after I explained all this to the plumber in addition to the details about the supply and drain hoses.

My wife went by later and took pictures of the installation. I just took a look at the pictures as I had to work late and I am pissed!!! Check out the following pictures

You can clearly see that they forgot to raise the level of the dishwasher. There is a big gap between the top of the dishwasher and the granite! Every installer knows that this has to be adjusted. To make matters worse, one of the plumbers installed the toe kick (the black one that has the long adjustable depth rods) with the dishwasher being so low to the ground and another plumber opens the door and breaks off both of the rods. They throw it away and say to my wife the toe kick is not needed. What a bunch of crock. They also screwed in the side screws obviously at the wrong level. I have to ask them to come back and raise the level of the dishwasher and rescrew in. I am really annoyed as my builder assured me these plumbers knew what they were doing. I should have just gone with the Miele authorized dealer that I bought the dw from. They do the installation for $150. I thought I was saving that by letting the builder do it! In addition to this, one of the plumbers was a wise crack and was behaving in a less than polite manner with my wife. The builder is going to get an earful from me tomorrow. I hope that the process of opening the DW door and breaking off the toe kick rods did not damage the door itself. Otherwise I have to get the builder to pay for the damage. I bought this myself and asked him to install it. So, I don't know if I can make him liable.

Anyway, its really not a big deal to fix this install...the hard part is the wiring and plumbing if its not already done.
You should unscrew the four screws holding it in on the side, slide the unit out, get a level, raise it to the height you want it and make sure its level (there are two screws that raise the back two legs and the two legs on the front you turn with a screw driver around and around...
When level and at the right height, push it in...you can fine tune the height now...when the height is sorted you need to push it in so that the front is level. When this is done and you are sure everything is ok, screw in the 4 screws again to the wood and you are done...easy peasy...you just need to fix the toe kick now...builder can do that...

I went to the house today and the plumber had not even installed the four screws on the sides. So, that is good news. They cut the toe kick and installed it without raising the dishwasher and when they tried to open the dishwasher the rod broke off. How critical is it to install the toekick that came with the Miele?

I talked with my builder this morning about why the DW was not raised up. He said the plumber told him that if he raises anymore, the granite overhang would interfere with the DW handle and we could hurt our finger while closing the DW. Yikes! Did they put too much overhang? How do other people do it?

Also, to raise the level, do they have to pull out the dishwasher and raise the back level and then raise the front level and then push it in? I thought there was a way to raise the whole dishwasher just from the front.

I don't have the Miele toekick installed.
I guess I don't have much overhang. However, I'm looking at your pictures now trying to figure out what the installer is talking about...Especially with the stock SS front that you have on the Miele DW, it makes no sense what he is saying...at least to me.
You can adjust the level of the back and the front of the DW when it's pushed in...however, you really should roughly level the DW before pushing it in and then do final fine tuning when it's in...otherwise you risk having a lopsided DW...it all depends on how level your floor is. If it's perfectly level, you can adjust it almost perfectly outside of the unit and just push it in and just do the final height adjustment(making sure to turn all of the 2 screws and 2 front feet evenly).

Did your unit come with a manual? You can d/l them from the miele site if you get stuck.

OK - you've got a bunch of hacks for plumbers, and the cabinet designer and or installers aren't too swift either.

To be fair , I'm not sure what info they we given, so if the Miele DW and it's matchy matchy flush type install weren't spec'd from the get go then the designer / installer get a pass.

I understand what the plumber is saying, Your granite overhangs a lot at the dishwasher point because it(dishwasher) is flush with the faceframes and not the door and drawer fronts which sit proud of those by 3/4 - 7/8". What has failed to be specified or installed is the endpanel on the left flush with the door faces and the 45 deg. filler to the right in the same plane as the doors.

This is fairly typical with framed cabinetry especially with partial overlay doors.

I think your solution will be to add a finished piece of material under the counter above the DW.

The Miele plastic toe is not needed but may be desirable. You will need/want a piece of stained toe to go in front of the DW at the least if you don't use the supplied black one.

Wait till you see the price on the two brackets and the black plastic! You might also have to uninstall the unit and remove the pan to free the broken piece of bracket if it's still inside the unit.

I have full overlay cabinet doors but unfortunately, the dishwasher is in the island on the left end. See the picture below

There are no cabinet doors on either side of the dishwasher. That is why I had the desire to install the dishwasher flush with the panel. But since I did not realize the granite overhang is going to interfere with the handle, now I have a problem to solve. Unfortunately, we did not give Miele's specs to the cabinet makers since they said all dishwashers are the same, you can choose later. Ours is not a super high end house. We probably went high end on a middle of the road builder. The dishwasher being that low looks ugly since the door is so low. Again, I guess I have to pull the dishwasher out to raise the level right not just the front.

I don't think it will look right on the right side if I ask the cabinet guy to put a trim piece on top of the piece that is already there to the left of the dw.

Any other ideas?

I guess I cannot use the black toe kick that came with the dw. The cabinet guy said he will leave me a strip, but with the dw this low, I will have to either cut the height or raise the dishwasher

Does the DW handle actually interfere with the granite when opening? I would try it before assuming it does. Just raise the DW up yourself, put it flush with the ajoining cabinets and try it...I thought the same with mine but the angle that it opens did not cause any issues.

The handle does not touch the granite. However, unless you are opening the dw from underneath, you won't be able to put your fingers between the granite and the handle. What is worse is you could theoretically get your fingers hurt by trying to close it and get jammed up in the granite. The handle is not jammed, your fingers are!! If this is not the case, I guess I could raise the dishwasher. It is already flush with the cabinet side panels. Raising it is the simplest thing to do. However, if it is going to hurt us!! The other option is to run a wood trim in the gap between the top of the DW and the granite and then run a toekick below that is cut to a lower height. But the bottom of the dw door will still not line up with the bottom of the panel! All solutions are compromises I guess.

OK - here's what I'd do:

Ask / have the cabinet maker fabricate another end panel out of 3/4" material to match the drawers/doors. It'll be "l" shaped. Apply this over the existing panel to left of DW. Have him make a full overlay corner filler for the right of the DW - left of sink at the correct angle. Apply it and now all of your DW elevation will be in the same plane as your sink elevation.

You can then pull the DW forward and raise it up to be installed properly.

N.B. - you need to measure the height of your doors or door + drawer to see if they are the same height as the Miele panel. Looks close, but if it's not exact you'll still have trouble getting all the horizontal lines to mate up and toekick trouble.

I'd offer to pay for the material, let him supply the labor to make up for the fact that not "all dishwashers are the same" like he thought! He can book that cost under cont. education, on his balance sheet.
