New Member-Please Help With Large Don Quixote Statue

Hi,

I am new and am looking for help identifying this statue that I have. My Grandmother passed it on to me and all I know is she bought it about 30 - 40 years ago at an antique shop in Boston.

It stands about 4 ft tall and is carved out of solid wood. The chest opens up to reveal a small cabinet. Someone told me maybe it was a wine or liquor cabinet.

I cannot find any markings or anything indicating its maker or origin. Any help would be appreciated, thanks kindly in advance!

I'm guessing your plants are 1-Gallons. They've come through the stress of shipping (and may be straight out of a greenhouse). We like to rest little roses in a shaded place, with plenty of water, for a couple of days, before planting. So, they've had a bit of a shock, those little plants. They should be fine, and now, they're in the ground, which is probably something quite new for them. Make sure they're watered well, particularly in windy conditions, which are drying. It's this transitional shock, as much as anything else, which has wilted the blooms they came with. No biggie. Those blooms, now that you've seen them, should be removed anyhow. Right now, it's more important for your little roses to turn their energy to production of a strong root system, long before they are asked to use energy to produce topgrowth, and blooms. I know it's hard, but you HAVE seen blooms on at least some of your 15. You'd be wise to remove all buds from those plants for a while, to make them build root, rather than bloom. I find it hard to do this -- and I always "need" to see a bloom, if only to make sure I have the right rose. That being so, I usually let them set and develop ONE bloom. Then, that's all for a while. I'd recommend not feeding them for the present. Just water them, and support them as they become accustomed to your conditions, and they should be fine. Jeri

Maria - I love that picture, too! All the AV's look like they're floating just above the tables! There's no way I could begin collecting African Violets... there are way too many varieties! I have one, a lavender flowered one, and I am happy with just the one! It has just finished blooming, after having been in flower for the last 6 months, or so... it's the first one I've ever had bloom beyond what it had when it came from the store! I don't want to press my luck and get any more right now! My Plumeria cutting is doing good... it's slowly developing little leaves... but since the days are shorter now and it's getting to be winter, I think it's kind of resting. Once spring rolls around, it should take off and grow like crazy! I am so happy for you, Cindee... you'll be getting a new lease on life, so to speak! Even though I'm not a big fan of golf, it'll be fabulous to hear about your days on the course! I have partial time in a wheelchair to look forward to... most likely, within the next ten years, I'll not be able to get around as well as I do now... my legs, hips and back really give me problems at times. I'm just happy to be able to garden now, and I'm putting in all the time I possibly can, while I can! Of course, there's always the chance that my legs and hips will hold up... We all want to see your amaryllis bed, Soultan! It's gotta look awesome! I can't wait to get a glimpse of it!

thanks for all the input! Nckvlle- i love the gazing ball and the blown glass! I had a chance to see a chiluly exhibit at phipps conservatory in pittsburgh, it was something! Holly- i love your pond and your "little man " is perfect for the area! We also have a pond , with koi, do you have fish in yours? Is the water colored that gorgeous lagoon blue or does it happen naturally? Thyme2dig, I read allot about her, i like that she represents youth, and love her graceful expression. I have looked at statues everywhere, and there is something about her that draws me in! She will be in the garden thru the arbor in the picture you saw. I want you to be able to see her strait thru the arbor (but she will be closer to the back fence), so i already have a rose hedge planned to go on each side of the arbor. The arbor will have white climbing roses and maybe clematis on it. She will be fairly far from the birdfeeder, i think itll be out of view. Plus i have a tardiva hydrangea planted by the feeder, which will kinda take away the attention from the feeder. I feel like itll all come together this spring, but with help from you all! As soon as i am able to set the statue i will post pics again. Thanks! more pics please! :)

Just to give you more info than you probably want to know, if St. Francis is holding anything paper-wise, it's supposed to be the rule he wrote for his friars, the Franciscan Rule. See the statue of him at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The reason St. Anthony, a follower of St. Francis, holds the Book of the Gospels is because he was very learned--in fact St. Francis was a little leery about having such a learned man join his community: he wanted simple, humble souls. But he changed his mind after he heard St. Anthony preach. Then Francis allowed Anthony to start teaching his friars, deciding that such profound learning wasn't such a bad thing. So my guess is that the lore got mixed up along with way with the statue makers and they put the book of the Gospels with St. Francis when it should have been his Rule. (But Francis definitely loved the Gospels and probably knew them by heart--he just wasn't a book-learning kind of guy.) Here is a link that might be useful:

I am sure it's one of a kind....something someone made for some specific purpose at the time.
Looks Spanish or Portugese....but you knew that.
I am sure he guarded something precious...but think he;s lots older than the concept of a "liquor cabinet".

It looks sort of folk art, but I doubt it was made as a liquor cabinet.

Thanks! I have scoured the internet looking for info and keep coming up with nothing. I've been looking for close to a year. Can anyone suggest any other place to post where I might be able to get more info? Or should I have it appraised?

I found a Don Quijote virtual museum, where I spotted a statue very similar to yours. Your statue came as a pair. They both appear to have chests that open up like cabinets. Looks like Spain as the origin.

Is the inside of it lined with cedar or possibly all made of cedar? Looks like cedar to me. Is it usual to line someting not meant for clothing storage with cedar? Cedar has a very strong odor which might permeate anything stored there.

Really!! And of course the female is called Dulce.
I'm not sure what info you hope to find....it's not a manufactured item...likely it was made in Toledo ( as in Spain not Ohio! LOL!) and is a one of a kind, made by an artesan likely for the tourist trade....
Why would you have it appraised? An appraisal is someone's educated guess as to what it's worth...unless you arew anting to settle an estate of schedule it on your insurance....there is no need.
The co0mbined knowledge of the people posting here is greater than any appraiser you will find. The only advantage to a certified appraiser would be that they would (maybe!) know the market in your area.

I don't think it is made of cedar. I guess I was hoping to find out the age of the item, what it may have been used for, it's history. You are probably right that it was one of a kind and made for a specific purpose.

I guess I was thinking I could have it appraised by an antique specialist who might be able to find more info on it and would have an idea of its value, but that isn't necessary.

Thank you all kindly, that similar one at the Don Quixote Virtual Museum is so similar, thanks for finding that!

Wow, Zofie, that website is some find! Not only is the item identical, but also if you browse around a bit there are some fabulous other pieces and a wealth of information. Who knew that Cervantes was buried on the same day as William Shakespeare? (Not that I would have previously been able to call to mind who wrote Don Quixote in the first place).
