Has anyone done business with or considered Major Homes ?

I am considering them for a bathroom remodel and the number of glowing reviews is amazing. They are highly rated on Angie's List (Service Star member for last 3 years)and provided a comprehensive estimate.

I was always taught that if something is too good to be true, I should be suspicious. Should I? Are you aware of any websites that record customer complaints? I only found reviews on one site - find a pro - that recorded over 100 positive reviews and I'd like to see less favorable reviews in order to get a more balanced picture.

I found them on Angie's list as well and they came to my house for a quote. I thought their sales pitch was too time consuming as they insisted that my husband be present, and then spent about an hour trying to pitch to us to hire them and sign the contract right there. We didn't, of course, and I too tried to find other reviews on them, both positive and negative because no one is perfect. 99.9% of the reviews are positive, but I have no idea if they are legitimate. I did find only one post that was negative. I don't like the fact that their website does not show photos of any of their work and the saleman did not bring any photos to our meeting. He based his whole sales pitch on their Angie's List reviews as well as their BBB rating.

A few years ago I booked a "5 star" hotel in Hawaii based on all these positive reviews I read on line. There was one person that complained about lack of maintenance, dirty water, a foul smell, noisy birds swawking in the middle of the night, etc. Turns out that one complainer was right, so I tend to seriously consider a complaint when I find one. In the end, I had a bad feeling about hiring someone that no one else I knew hired and went with a local contractor that everyone in my neighborhood raves about - he ended up being very expensive, built me a nice bathroom, but did a mediocore job at tiling my bathroom - so you never know.

I'd be curious to learn if anyone here has used them as well and what their experience was.

Is this the same Major Homes in Bayside??? They do decent work but they sub-contract certain items which is why I did not choose them.I too felt the "car salesman" tactics. I live in the Bayside area and did my bathroom with bullfrog builders this year. If i remember correctly i think their site was bullfrogny.com.They do the work themselves and no pressure!

justme, your assessment of going with a modular is just about exactly what I believe. (Especially the "some are great, some are really bad" comment.) I'll go so far as to say that you cannot tell by price either. I've seen some real crap homes that were priced as high as good ones. If someone was beginning a search, I'd start right here; http://www.nahb.org/directory.aspx?directoryID=340 There is a tremendous amount of flexibility in designing the home, but never as much as site building. There is a consistency of build that you're certainly not guaranteed to get from site built. If you're the type that is not comfortable with GC'ing an entire build from scratch, but are still able to handle some things, this might be for you. The builder that supplies and sets the home is as important as the manufacturer. If you cannot find a local builder you're comfortable with, look for manufacturers that sell direct and have their own "set crews". You may come to understand that your modular built home is superior in many ways to some site-built homes, but it's only because you researched the home that you bought. When you go to sell your home, 90% or more of the potential customers will ~not~ possess that same confidence. This ~could~ limit your price or sell-ability. Most people associate "modular" with "trailers". I went modular for the following reasons; 1. Loved the floorplan 2. Excellent quality manufacturer 3. Excellent sales agent/builder 4. The components used were all items I was comfortable with and could find at local lumber yards. 5. The builder allowed me to GC every other aspect of our build. 6. This included the nearly 1000 sq ft of upstairs that we finished/contracted. 7. End result was more home for less money. Another thing I did that I know has the potential to bite me at resale is that I installed a wood basement. This gave me a super comfortable basement with excellent "finishability". I'm confident that our choices gave me the most bang for my buck, and everyday I go home to a house that I thank God for, but it's ~possible~ that I'll need just the right buyer to get as much as I could if it was 100% site built. Now that I'm nearing the end (we've been in the house nearly 18 months), including the basement finishing, I'm quite pleased with everything we've done, and am gaining a lot more confidence in how the house would show if we had to sell. If a thread ever becomes a debate about what is the same/better between modular and site-built, or manufactured and site built for that matter, I'd be the first one to bail out. A person either cares to research it or they don't. Either way, I'll share my thoughts and experiences if appropriate, but I have zero interest in trying to persuade anyone that "my house is as good as theirs".

bestyears, I am with you on the intense need to plan. My older DS always knew what he wanted to do careerwise, knew he wanted a small liberal arts college, and knew he wanted to be in New England. That narrowed down our search very nicely so it was easy to make "the list." Fast forward, he dropped out freshman year, but that's another story, which some of you already know. Second DS, who is now a junior like your DD, has changed his mind several times about what he thinks he'd like to do. He has also changed his mind about location -- first it was "no way am I staying in Boston" (where we live) and now it's "I really like Northeastern." To make matters more interesting, this is the year where he has somewhat dropped the ball academically, bringing his GPA down several points thank you very much. This is my super-conscientious child who until this year, never got a grade below a B with maybe one exception. So our "list" keeps changing. He says he is bringing his GPA back up this semester. Let's hope. He also is now saying going to school in Boston would not be a bad idea, because he really doesn't like to fly (he was, actually still is, looking at a few schools in Chicago and DC). Six months ago, he only wanted to look at big schools in big cities. Now he wants to look at smaller schools in Maine. He is all over the place! We did the Johnson O'Conner aptitude testing last year. Link is below. We did it with our older DS too. We all found it fascinating, actually, and DH and I have both said we'd love to take it ourselves. However, up until that time, DS wanted to be a teacher. He has worked at an elementary afterschool program since 6th grade (first as volunteer, now as a paid teacher). He just has a knack for working with kids. When we met with the guy who did the testing, he told my son he would not enjoy teaching, he'd be bored, etc. Even though we told DS he should follow his heart and do what he loves, he soon after decided that teaching wasn't for him and that he wanted to major in business (which actually was not one of the top few career choices for him, though I think management was on the list somewhere). So right now, he's still saying business/market research, and every once in a while I say "...but you should look at schools that have education programs just in case." Anyway, I guess my point is that I am pretty sure my DS really has no idea what he wants to do. and we are basically looking at mostly larger schools that have a lot of options! Also, I think another good way to explore possibilities is through some kind of summer program. My DS worked at a music summer camp last summer and LOVED it (of course, because he is meant to be a teacher). But this summer he wants to explore the other side, so he will be an intern at an investment firm. I think for him, this is a fantastic idea, because he will see if working in that atmosphere is actually appealing to him or not. Has Anyone Considered Tria

I bought the silk'n Sensepil, similar to the tria, but I think it does a bigger area with each zap. I've only done 3 treatments so far, and I notice much less hair follicles in my underarms. Also in the bikini area, so excited about not having to wax that part anymore. Hoping for better results after a few months. I got it on Gilte Group for a lot less than retail, $275 rather than $400-500. I've seen the tria on there as well.

Snookums, thanks for the compliment on my BS. :) Kek10, your GC may not be happy with your waiting until the granite is in, but it is a whole lot better than your buying expensive tile that doesn't work and you're stuck. I was POSITIVE I had the right tile. Just positive. It looked gorgeous with everything. Then the granite went it and I was shocked how awful the tile looked with it. I even called my KD and told her it wouldn't work and she argued with me about it. "Of course it will work! It's lovely!" She came over, walked in the door, took one look at the tile and said "You're right. That looks like crap." lol I ended up bringing home tons and tons of samples because the granite had such a strong influence on how the tile looked. Caramels went pink. Rich tans went flat. The tile that I ended up using was just brought home because I was bringing so many samples home and grabbing anything that looked like a possibility. Truthfully, the tile looked like barf in the tile store. UGLY! Brought it home and it looked fabulous in the kitchen. I ended up using Seneca Handmold in Bamboo. Who knew? I used Major Homes for my gut bathroom remodel, and have posted a link to my pictures in this forum. They did a great job, and would have finished the project in less than 2 weeks if it weren't for a sheetrock hole that had to be repaired before the project could continue. This is pretty good considering I live in a 4th Floor walk-up. The demolition team was awesome.

I hired a contractor once based on glowing reviews in Kudzu.com and had a bad experience. Some of the reviews may have been fake. Our current contractor was hired because friends have used him so I have actually seen his work. He also has a college degree in construction management.

all legitimate. Every job that we do and there are alot of them every day, recieves a survey sheet and in the past 6 years we have compiled over 17,000 survey sheets. Not everyone is perfect, but we call the customer the same day and send our men right back to fix whatever they feel is wrong. There is no way that I have thousands of friends and relatives. The point is very simple, we live and breathe our faimily business. We run an amazingy great compnay and go to any length to make sure our customers are happy. We have an amazing website. Please go to the website look around and make sure to go to the Bio section where we introduce our managers and accociates as well and my son Jason and myself. You cannot be in business for 93 years by luck. As far as one person saying we are pushy, if asking for the sale after spending 2 or 3 hours is pushy, then yes we are pushy. Every salesperson has the right to ask for the SALE at the end of any presentation.I love when others push their contractors on websitses such as this only to find out that they have been in business for 1 or 2 years. In one case the contractor was already out of business.
