My Daughter's Master Bath Redo

Hey all,

I mostly hang out in Home Decorating and Kitchens, but started clicking on Baths several times a day a few months ago when we started helping DD2 with her master bath. Total gut. It turned out fabulous, so I wanted to share.

She purchased a mid-90's home (only 1 owner that purchased during construction, but didn't upgrade anything). The basic builders bathroom was a total nightmare. 4 years later, she has her new master!

very nice!!! I thought I was the only one with a coat rack - I mean towel rack - in my bathroom!!! Love it!

Thanks for posting! So timely for me as I am in the process of gathering ideas for a late 80's MB remodel. We too need to gut and start again replacing one sink with double (hopefully) and removing a two person jacuzzi tub that takes up way too much room and requires too much water to fill. Your style is quite similar to mine so I really enjoyed seeing the pictures and seeing what you were able to accomplish. Would you mind answering a couple of questions for me...? Does the 60"double sink work well in this space, what is the floor space between the shower and tub, and what tub was used and dimension size? Thanks!

My "later on" master bath "update" turned into "more" and "now" due to a leaking shower pan. My house is a 1964 ranch originally built with sort of a "french/english country" feel. My "update" plans were to replace the sink/fixtures and countertops, texture/paint walls, re-paint cabinets and frame the mirror, still sticking with the beige/cream/taupe color scheme. Bedroom hasn't been redone. . .now it will follow the bath. The leaking shower pan added a complete shower gut/re-do/new shower fixtures (maybe a multi-head and in-out swing door). I'm afraid just replacing the shower pan and attempting to re-use the tile or match it would just look bad. I would like to keep the original floor tile and for a couple of reasons do not plan on pulling out the bulkhead or re-doing the ceiling (although it's not totally out of the question) the "big bath" for the other two bedrooms has a similar tile in white/brushed gold and the same bulkhead and that trim is all over the house (and I kind of like it. . .guess I'm a 60's kind of gal!!). So, I'm thinking just putting in 3 cans or pendants, probably cans. . .while they are beautiful, I don't like pendants in my bathroom. . tend to bang them into the mirror/wall). Will replace the large mirror with single mirrors over the lavatory and make-up area and add an electrical outlet in the space between them and change ceiling heater to a vent/heater. Probably replace the shutters (like the shutters, the inserts not so much and can't figure out how to get them out. . or how to put something in). My biggest concern is the floor. . .do you think it's salvageable and do you think I can find something for the shower that will blend. I do want some accent tiles in the shower, maybe glass?? FWIW, I'm not a "blue" person. . .more soft greens, taupe, greys, red/burgandy/pink and yellows. Any thoughts on how much, what kind, and what color of lipstick I can put on this little piggy would be greatly appreciated!!

The vanity was ordered through Vintage Tub & Bath. It was on sale at the time (always wait for sales!), of course it's not now. Thanks again for the compliments!

Thank you! Natesgram, the curtains were ordered from an Etsy shop - sources are listed at bottom of article. You can look it up by her name. They are lined, and can be used on a rod, but she wanted to use clip rings. it's a Waverly fabric, light weight. We actually used tableclothes for the curtain fabric in the nursery - but had them lined. They are SO heavy. But even so, she added blackout liners behind them so he sleeps better. Someone said something about the curtain rods - Target, their brand I believe. Same finish she used in nursery, but has different finials.

I've never seen in cracked. Not in any house Ive ever looked at. That's an installation error. And heated tile floors are dirt cheap! I have a tiny bath, I'll admit. But we had to remove the subfloor and ceiling and move walls. My materials were: $1k Maax jetted tub with heater and sound package. $1.25k vanity, granite top (my mistake--chose black--don't do this), medicine cabinet, IKEA cabinet in toilet niche, standing cabinet $800 plumbing fixtures: shower panel, diverter, tub filler, sink faucet $200 solid core two panel raised door $550 tile Toilet was already new. $350 frameless doors $200 hydronic towel heater $350 light fixtures $200 floor heat Drywall, subfloor, joint compound, green glue, cement board, red guard, primer, paint, mortar, leveling compound, grout, caulk: $1250 Plumbers: $1500 across two bathrooms My hourly friend: About the same Electrician: $350 across two bathrooms Finish work guy: going to hit $2k before he's done. I did about $1500 worth of work, too. So I definitely lowballed above with two for $12k, even not counting my work. $10k master--second bathroom I did way more work on, and the materials were quite a bit cheaper, so it works out to $6k--hired out, it would have been more like $8k. My first master bath ever I did for resale. It was WAY bigger, 18' by just over 8', but I chose the cheapest, nicest looking, well-built neutral materials I could get. So it was right at $10k in today's dollars, too. An addition: The foam insulation for the attic that was exposed was $1300. (Only way to reach recommended R value with our construction.) I also used it in the master bath walls and all around the cantilevered rim joist when we tore out the lower floor, so accounting for that is tricky. I also got to use the next door neighbors' extra dumpster space in return for helping her go through her basement. That saved a lot.

Thank you, Back2nd. lol She loves the coat racks. May paint the one in her DS bathroom, but hasn't yet.

Pixe1, the tub name/spec is listed at the bottom of the article. She does not miss the 12" lost by replacing a 72" vanity with a 60" vanity. This one has more drawer space than 72" and both door pairs have shelves, so plenty of storage. I will measure the space between shower and tub tomorrow when I babysit. Thanks again.

Teapot, how funny! I actually met Jane (the owner) on Gardenweb. She wanted to add my kitchen, then she asked me to start writing for Atticmag. It's fun to share our own houses and DD2's in between all the serious kitchens and decorating articles.

I had just signed up to follow the blog too so I opened my email this morning to see all of the pictures of this great transformation. What a nice job! I love the vanity, the floor and especially the Clarissa chandy... I have one over my tub as well.

Treasure, I first saw the chandelier over your tub and showed your pictures to DD2. So thank you! Of course it went on sale after she bought it, but she did get 15% off by signing up to receive emails and got free shipping as well.

Pixe1, I forgot to measure yesterday but wrote a note and will this afternoon.

Someone emailed asking about purchases. The tub was ordered through Home Depot and the vanity was ordered through Vintage Tub & Bath. Great customer service with the broken marble backsplash x3.

Pixe1, there is 30" of floor from the marble shower curb to the trim on the tub edge. The shower door is 28".

The tub is the Evolution 5' x 32". It is 21.5" deep. Water depth to overflow is 18.5"

Love this bath. Only wish my master bath was that big so I could do something similar. I could use the vanity though. Are you happy with the quality of the vanity for the price? Did you order it online? Were there any problems with delivery/damage? Is it solid wood?

Katie, thanks! The vanity is very well made. Nice and heavy. Nothing was or is coming apart. The shelves and drawers are well made. All are soft close and no problem.

If you read the article, the counter comes attached with sinks to the vanity. But the backsplash piece is on top. You would think something wrapped in 50 sheets of foam encased in hardwood on all but one side would not break! Original was broken, replacement was broken, next one wasn't broken but was only 48" then finally the right size unbroken. It was ordered from Vintage Tile & Bath and their customer service could not have been more helpful getting the replacements sent.

It was delivered, unwrapped for me to inspect (DD2 was at work) and signed for with a note about the backsplash.

I thought I would add a link to DD2's (finally!) finished MBR. It flows so well with the MBath and the rest of her house.

She also found glass knobs and changed out the vanity knobs. Gives the dark spot a bit of sparkle.
