My Daughter's Master Bath Redo

Hey all,

In what seems like years ago (don't most remodels feel that way!?) we started helping DD2 with her master bath. Total gut. It turned out fabulous, so I wanted to share. This is the DD2 some of you helped win the gift certificate at a local home store a few months ago and have seen her other rooms in the home transform.

She purchased a mid-90's home (only 1 owner that purchased during construction, but didn't upgrade anything). The basic builders bathroom was a total nightmare. 4 years later, she has her new master! She would have liked it sooner!

The new bath looks great.

Is that original a typical mid *90s* bath in your region? It has a very late 1970s early 80s feel for my neck of the woods.

I am always interested in this type of thing. My sister rented a house before buying her current one and I had assumed it had been built in the mid 90s based upon *its finishes, and it had actually been built around 2005. I think there is a lot of regional variation. Sometimes with a build where the client gets to pick the finishes, it also depends upon the age of the client.

My "later on" master bath "update" turned into "more" and "now" due to a leaking shower pan. My house is a 1964 ranch originally built with sort of a "french/english country" feel. My "update" plans were to replace the sink/fixtures and countertops, texture/paint walls, re-paint cabinets and frame the mirror, still sticking with the beige/cream/taupe color scheme. Bedroom hasn't been redone. . .now it will follow the bath. The leaking shower pan added a complete shower gut/re-do/new shower fixtures (maybe a multi-head and in-out swing door). I'm afraid just replacing the shower pan and attempting to re-use the tile or match it would just look bad. I would like to keep the original floor tile and for a couple of reasons do not plan on pulling out the bulkhead or re-doing the ceiling (although it's not totally out of the question) the "big bath" for the other two bedrooms has a similar tile in white/brushed gold and the same bulkhead and that trim is all over the house (and I kind of like it. . .guess I'm a 60's kind of gal!!). So, I'm thinking just putting in 3 cans or pendants, probably cans. . .while they are beautiful, I don't like pendants in my bathroom. . tend to bang them into the mirror/wall). Will replace the large mirror with single mirrors over the lavatory and make-up area and add an electrical outlet in the space between them and change ceiling heater to a vent/heater. Probably replace the shutters (like the shutters, the inserts not so much and can't figure out how to get them out. . or how to put something in). My biggest concern is the floor. . .do you think it's salvageable and do you think I can find something for the shower that will blend. I do want some accent tiles in the shower, maybe glass?? FWIW, I'm not a "blue" person. . .more soft greens, taupe, greys, red/burgandy/pink and yellows. Any thoughts on how much, what kind, and what color of lipstick I can put on this little piggy would be greatly appreciated!!

I actually have a follow up question regarding the steam shower....our current shower is fully enclosed, meaning it has a tiled ceiling in addition to the walls and floor. Is there a way to use swanstone for the ceiling in addition to the walls?? The "kits" that I see online only cover the walls up to 72"....there doesn't seem to be anything for the ceiling. Thanks!

It seems like that raised area to the left of your vanity is an awkward space. Can you rework the tile that surrounds the tub, so that it has more of a stand-alone look? Maybe leave a border of 1 or 2 tiles around the tub itself, but take away the platform on either side. Then you could have a longer vanity with 2 sinks in the space where your current vanity is, but just extend it to the wall. If your vanity is in good shape, you could just replace the doors, paint it, put on a granite top, and extend the granite to the left all the way to the back wall. You could either put cabinets under that area or leave it open for a make-up area.

As far as style goes, I like the idea of things that are reminiscent of the original style but still updated. You don't have to keep things "period appropriate" if that's not what you like, but design often works better when you keep the original in mind. I think that your ideas are fine but could be a little more unique, have a little more interest to them. What do you like about the original design, or about 70's-esque design in general? Or what do you hate? I really like how this bathroom reads as retro but not outdated. The little vintage accents - especially that owl - add a cool touch, too. I don't really like the idea of a gray floor tile in this bathroom, unless you're wanting to go a lot more modern with it all. What about something like this if you wanted to reference back to the blue? Or go with 70's inspired neutrals, more brown/gold than gray. Good luck!

The original reminds me of my 1988 bathroom in the house we built. What an improvement.

I love the chandelier. The whole bathroom is just elegant. I'll bet she is thrilled. What a good mom and dad you guys are :-)

Have to agree that the original looks like 1978 not 1990's maybe the builder was using up some mass-purchased material!

In any case, what a wonderful transformation it certainly looks much cleaner and more restful now. Although I think you need a nice comfy bath mat and the floor looks hard and cold!

Pal, I agree. It looks more 80s to me too. Maybe the builder was left behind. lol She owned a townhouse before this and it was built in the early 2000s - completely different builder look. I don't look at many/any lower priced builder homes on a regular basis, but did look at a couple in this neighborhood. The other was the same layout, but no yard. And wallpaper EVERYWHERE. DR was divided from foyer/living room and she liked the openness of this house.. and the yard. I don't know if the same builder built that house, and I don't remember the bathroom finishes. Looks amazing Allison! Love everything. The vanity is gorgeous as well as the shelving. The towels are supercute. I was just thinking the other day that I want to stop getting boring white towels.

I couldn't get on atticmag before. Must have been too much traffic.

Does atticmag have a pinterest board? I was trying to find one the other day.

Sweet! (As in wonderful not cutsey) I pinned the shelves at the end of the bath. That's exactly what I'm thinking of if I ever finsh the downstairs bath. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Dee! We had pinned a lot of shelves. The hardest part was deciding how to work it into the T&G and where to stop/start it. We ended up putting it on the side of bookcase, since tub front is covered. That way, it looks like the wall to the right is just continued. Makes them a surprise once you see them!

Thank you, Autumncolor. The chandelier is just gorgeous. It wasn't on sale, so she signed up for emails to get 15% off coupon emailed to her. Of course it went on sale afterward! But 5% isn't that much. lol

Absolutely amazing, Allison, but I never doubt your vision and ability and tenacity to see a project through the way you envisioned. You did a MARVELOUS job.

It's beautiful! (of course - like mother, like daughter LOL)

I, too, love the garden seat in the shower. Am still trying to find some fabric to bring some turquoise into our great room (pillows), but so far am not having much luck on finding something with turquoise and red - that I like.

Crazy beautiful. I The turquoise and red are just amazing with it, and I don't think many of us would have thought to do that. Really spectacular, and what a great improvement in the property.

Thank you, all. The towels are actually turquoise and orange. She has orange (and red) in several other rooms as well.

She has a good eye, but I do help steer her the right way when she's off. lol She's young (25yo) so there's no doubt in another ten years or so she'll have it down pat and not ask me anymore! lol

What a gorgeous bathroom, and bravo to you for helping your DD with the transformation. DD and I love Amy butler fabrics (she is a quilter), and I also love the coat rack for towels.

kyshine sent an email asking a few questions. The tub was ordered through Home Depot. The vanity was ordered through Vintage Tub & Bath. It was on sale at the time (always wait for sales!), of course it's not now.
