replacing a Dela jetted shower system...how hard?
Comments (0)The previous owners of my "new" old home installed a horrible (at least to me) Delta jetted shower system in a newly renovated bathroom. It is the Victorian shower in "Venetian Bronze", with two body spray jets incorporated into the very large, apparently plastic, valve trim plate. It also has a handheld shower (no slide bar), which is inexplicably chrome. The matching "venetian bronze" sink faucet set irks me everytime I use it, as well, as it is extremely lightweight and small (plastic?) I'd like to replace all with good quality oil rubbed bronze fixtures...putting simply a nice largish rainshower head on a long arm in the shower plus a handheld on a slide bar. The thing is, I've no idea what goes on BEHIND the valve trim and shower wall and don't know whether what I'm talking about is a relatively simple, mostly on the surface job or one that will require ripping out a goodly portion of the tile wall. I have only a few spare 12 X 12 tiles. Can anyone shed any light on this? And can anyone suggest a good quality, solid oil rubbed bronze faucet and shower set? I like the looks of the Moen Rothbury in the pics I've seen online, but don't know if they are solid metal or also some sort of plastic casing over metal. Any advice on it, would also be appreciated. Comments (13)Thanks for the replies. It's a bit frustrating to not be there to take pictures or make measurements, myself. DH says that he will try to send some pictures to me, tomorrow. The available depth for an inside mount (backspace?) is about 1/2" which isn't very much. Probably just about enough for 1" wooden blinds. (Thanks for the reference, suero.) tracey_b - I'd love some pictures from your neighbor's house when they get back, that would be very helpful. I looked at the mounting requirements for plantation shutters & they would still need to be mounted on the outside because of the clearances (see link). I know, I just hate to cover up that beautiful trim, so, even if they are outside mounted, I guess they should only be as wide at the window opening & do the center windows individually. The trim carpenter did a great job of integrating the trim of those two windows. DH & I have decided that this needs to wait until I'm there and we can bounce ideas off of each other face-to-face. DD will just have to live with the temporary coverings from Lowes. DH is totally game for building a cornice if that is what we decide on. Thanks & I look forward to any other ideas y'all might have. Comments (16)You fellers sure know how to give a man the blues over a problem you don't even know the source of or potential outcome. How can you be certain it's not caused by a defective frostproof facuet that only leaks when facuet is being used or other simple thing to fix? I reccomend stepping back and finding out if the area even gets wet any longer, the leak just might be gone. If it were me I would look around at the usual suspects and if nothing turns up just keep an eye on the are of rot. If possible leave that one stud cavity open making it easy to watch. You could even cover it with a screwed in place panel that can be easily removed and replaced. After useing all plumbing in the vacinity and a couple of heavy rains if the wall doesn't get wet,I wouldn't go digging out the foundation or demoing the wall. After all the house isn't going to collapse as the result of one rotted stud. That is not extensive damage and I assure you that there are far worse in homes all over the world that have existed for years and people aren't calling in backhoes nor wringing their hands. If it were 6 or 8 feet of wall rotted away I would be concurned but still wouldn't excavate my foundation until I was certain what was causing it. Furthermore I seriously doubt those advising hantra to excavate would do it right now if they were paying. Hantra, have you found anything suspicious yet. If you have an outdoor water facuet mounted through the wall withing 15 feet either direction from your picture let us know....See Morehow to make my family room open floor plan cozy and put together
Comments (29)you may want to try sofa on the wall across from the window and love seat on window side. good job not crowding the window, by the way. if you move the sofa, keep the loveseat away from the window (you should be able to walk behind it) more on that later. having the sofas across from each other will open up the room and say "welcome, come on in" when you put a sofa across the room it says, caution keep out. your choice on how you want the room to feel. keep the sofa and loveseat the same distance from the fireplace sides, center them on fireplace not the room. if you want to keep the black footstool, try your red throw folded and draped over it and/or add a woven tray similar to your beautiful basket. (the tray will act as a place for snacks/remotes etc.) A lovely tall/and wide plant would be great behind/and to the side of the furniture on the window wall. (use a quality faux if you aren't a plant person or don't want to maintain it.)...See Moreenduring
