Has anyone purchased a Thermador oven lately?

I'm trying to find out if the noisy fan problem has been corrected with newer ovens and if there are still complaints about quality and service.

I like the appearance of the Thermador PO302 Professional double oven, and the functions of the Thermador Masterpiece DM double oven which has a microwave in the top thermal/convection oven. But I'm very very wary of buying this brand!

Does anyone have any experience with a new or newer Thermador wall oven? Thanks!

We installed a Thermador Masterpiece oven in September.
We are on our 4th service visit to calibrate the thermostatic control (now waiting for parts).
Oven works, it just does not come to the set temp and hold it well. (pretty critical)

The fan is not noisy, but it does run for a long time after oven is off. From forum reports, it appears like this is common on newer convection ovens that have the bottom element outside of the cooking chamber.

Thanks for your quick response. But, what exactly do you mean when you say that the bottom element is outside of the cooking chamber? I couldn't figure it out when I looked at the oven photos and diagrams on Thermador's website. Thanks.

I try to buy US Brands (when I can) but this is sad!!! Do a goggle search for "Consumer complaints about Thermador Ovens", then do one for "Consumer Complaints about Miele Ovens" sad sad sad, that's why I ended up with a Miele Dishwasher.

Hi Pam! Wow I had almost ordered the same one the other day with the combo micro-convection oven until I did a bunch of research and found horrible posts all over the internet about Thermador. When one starts doing research on the internet one tends to find tons of complaints about most everything so it is so difficult to make the right decision!! I feel your pain! lol Finally I figured the BEST place to find the answers was to call my trusty repairman that I have used for years and ask him what oven he would recommend for me. He would know what are the best and worst appliances. I asked him what are some of the best ones and which ones should I stay away from. His words: "I'm sorry to tell you but there are no reliable appliances out there. All the American made appliances are built to last 5 years and there are some that look like they've been put together with toy parts. They are built to cut costs and compete. They are not built like your Moms or your Grandmothers were built. Try to find something with REAL KNOBS (some are fake attached to a computer board) because the biggest problem I see is that the "touchpad" types blow and the whole board has to be replaced. ($$$$$$$- caching caching). Never buy LG- they are the worst. As for Foreign made, It is very difficult to find people who can service them not to mention the repair expense, and it can take quite a while to get parts". So I told him that I had planned on getting a Thermador oven and his advise was such that if I'm stuck on going Foreign that I should do the research and go with the most reliable one. I mentioned that I am now steering towards the Miele (love my dishwasher) and he said he had never worked on them because he was not certified but had heard they were good and if I could find mostly good reviews and not many complaints then I should either go that option, or just go with the American made GE or Whirlpool and pay for the 5 year coverage plan. He also said to get coverage plan for foreign. If you Google "who makes what appliances" you will find a list that tells you Bosch makes Thermador. I did not know that until last night. Bosch is also supposed to be good but I have found slews of complaints. Based on all the information I have put together I have decided to spend a little more and go with Miele. Miele makes Miele and that is it. They are a family owned company and notorious for quality and customer satisfaction. I am going to copy and paste some links to info that I have scrounged up. On this first site: http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/thermador-oven-c24598.html you will find comments made by a guy who used to work for Thermador and info about what is now going on in the company. "Consumer Reports" says, " > " Thermadors high-priced ME301E, $2,400, is > a top performer in > our tests. LOOK AT THESE COMPLAINTS ON "CONSUMER AFAIRS": http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/thermador.html I have not found any complaints on Miele ovens but some favorable reviews on "Epinions". There are some complaints on the dishwashers but I can tell you if they are not installed properly by certified Miele guy they will not drain properly so that's probably where some of the complaints come from. I have had a Miela "Diamante" for three years and not one problem. It's the best dishwasher I have owned and I have owned many. I also own Miele vacuum and it is THE BEST! So, that means that it's cute, but not functional for your husband's purposes. I don't have that oven, but do have a rotisserie. With good convection, it's not really necessary, especially at lower temperatures. That may be the reason for the limitation. Just put your items on stands so the air gets all around them, and they cook evenly, the fat drains, etc. There is supposed to be a "self-basting" aspect to rotisserie broiling, as gravity pulls the melted fat this way and that, but I haven't seen a difference. Perhaps there would be more with something like ribs if there's a heavy fat cap, but it still doesn't seem logically like it would be all that different. The real thing about the spit is that all sides are exposed to the broiler, so at higher temperatures, that would make a bigger difference.

I won't try to convince you on one over the other, but I wouldn't think dealing with two stores would bother me. In my case it really didn't matter because our remodeler deals with the brands enough that he wanted his own folks to install them, so we just had them delivered by the appliance center and he went from there. Bluestar vs. Wolf: I think you really just need to see them both up close to see if the open burners would bother you aesthetically. We really like them and like the look of them (they just look serious :). Each burner has its own cast iron bottom mold and top grate (I think the wolf top grates are double deep?), and clean up is really, really easy. We just use a hot wash cloth or sponge and wipe down debris after use...any salt, cooked bits, etc., just falls through the bottom grate onto a slide out catch pan below, which we line with aluminum foil and replace periodically (If it's wet food spillovers, then obviously sooner, but the bottom grate catches most things). If you really need to, you can just take an individual burner's set of grates off and scrub it with soap/water. The wolf is beautiful and was on our short list, so if you don't think you'd be able to live with the look of Bluestar, then you really can't do wrong either way. We were called by the afterburner BTUs of the bluestar and actually liked the more "component-like" structure of the grates/burners to clean as needed.

If you look at the bottom of the oven on the inside, you see a flat floor with no heating element. The heating element is on the other side of the bottom sheet metal.
Older ovens had the element attached to the inside bottom of the oven.

We have the Thermador triple (microwave/warming drawer/oven). Love it, but it is definitely noisy. The fan does turn off immediately when you shut the oven off though. The temp is right on (I use a thermometer to check it). This is the third Thermador wall oven we've owned and we have never had service issues (so far). I hear the Mieles are excellent and quiet to boot. I love the idea of the triple and it was more in the price range I wanted to pay. Bottom line - if noise is a big factor, steer clear.

What did you ultimately buy? Have you found out any more info. on the Thermador Pro ovens? I also love the look of them and about to purchase the appliances for my new kitchen. I'm on the fence though as I would be unhappy with a loud fan.

Wolf double-oven here, and the fans are loud enough in it, too. Yes, we have 2 convection fans in each oven. I haven't heard a Thermador run, but I suspect it's not any louder than the Wolf. The oven is running fine & normal, they say the convection ovens just sound louder due to the fans.

I have a triple MEMW301ES. It hasn't been that noisy and it holds a great temperature. The convection oven works great and really cuts time. The broiler is very powerful too. I've also found it easy to clean. It also has a much larger oven cavity than the Miele's. I feel that Miele's look great, but don't perform as well as the new Thermadors. And the new Thermadors aren't too shabby in the looks department either. I've had no regrets from the recent installation. And Miele doesn't make a triple stack--or a microwave for that matter. The triple stack is a great way to have more countertop space and more cabinets in the same area.

While many say you can never be too young or too thin, I'd alter the saying to---you can never have too much counter space and too many cabinets to hold things.

I've ordered a Thermadore, but it is not installed yet. I wonder it one can just turn off the convection and use the oven as a traditional thermal oven if you want it to be quiet?

I'm sure the oven will still use the convection to cool itself off rapidly, or alternatively to heat-up. I believe you'll get used to the noise & it won't be an issue.

Of course you can turn off the convection on the Thermador oven.

There you go, don't use convection mode & you won't hear the fan. Manual indicates a separate cooling fan, you will hear that thing.

We have a factory builder store nearby where they can run the ovens, maybe you have one close to you & can go see and hear these ovens in action. If we hadn't come across the Wolf on ebay 2 years ago, we'd be buying the Thermador Professional to go w/our Thermador cooktop & venthood. They've made ovens for many years and the price range is below that of the Wolf's, Miele's, and other higher end built-in's.

The fan runs on our oven even when we are using the traditional cooking mode. Thermador said that was normal and that it would run for either the convection or conventional modes.
My problem is that the oven doesn't hold the temperature very well and that it takes an extremely long time to preheat, even after it beeps to indicate that it is supposedly at the correct temperature -- it still takes another 10 minutes to really reach that temperature. Another cake flopped today because of this. Very frustrating...
