O'Keefe & Merritt Stove
Comments (83)I lost my beloved 1953 O'Keefe & Merritt when we downsized a couple of years ago, but yes, the oven and broiler doors were always very hot. I suspect the insulation was pretty much shot. It's too call for anyone to call Child Protective on me, so I'll admit that when my then-toddler (now age 45, and her own kids are mid-teens) was heading toward the broiler door one day and reaching slowly toward it, I said loudly and firmly, "Christy! Do NOT touch that! It's very hot! You'll get burned and it will hurt!" I stayed very close but did not stop her as she reached out one inquisitive finger and got a tiny blister. I gained a heck of a lot of credibility that day... There are ways to take an O'Keefe & Merritt apart, remove the old insulation, and replace it... A good idea we never acted on. You might consider doing that, for safety's sake. There are also some rebuilder$ who do that work, but you'd need to live in or near California....See MoreO'Keefe and Merritt Stove Timer/Auto Cook Controls
Comments (2)If you want to 'turn off' the clock while allowing all the other electrical components to work then you will probably need to reconfigure the wiring to bypass the clock. Anyone with a little patience, basic electrical wiring knowledge and a voltmeter should be able to help. If you're looking to get the clock working properly again, that's a different matter. I spoke to an O'Keefe & Merritt stove restoration expert and he says his repaired clocks run fine for a couple of years, then fail again. I suspect since the clocks are mechanical and made from metal, fresh lubrication can definitely help but decades of performance took their toll, worn down gears and such....See More1950s O'keefe & Merritt...help
Comments (2)I researched these a lot a few years ago before abandoning the idea. Here is a link to some resources. If this has been in use pretty consistently, you can probably make it usable with relatively minor repair. It may be worth asking this restorer or another company whether they would be willing to do a lower level of restoration, since I assume the $7000 includes enamel work and chrome work. These are valuable stoves, but I don't think I would put $7000 in one unless I really loved cooking on it....See MoreWhere to sell 1940s-50s vintage "O'keefe and Merritt Stove"
Comments (31)Anglophilia, what’s the distance between your mini wood island and your stove counter and the counter across from it? We have a drop leaf kitchen table in our kitchen that we use as a mini island (leaves always down) and our distances are narrower than the recommended 42” min. I like the shorter distance for functionality/various drop zones. You must like your narrower spaces too (unless they’re larger than the look)....See MoreMiss EFF
