Basement smell brought upstairs

We have a portable dehumidifier unit in the basement due to dampness. It works great HOWEVER, it blows the musty smell upstairs. We do not have a door to the basement so I cant shut it off. Any suggestions? Do you think framing in a door and closing it off while we run the dehumidifier would help? If I dont run it for a day or so the AC starts to smell musty coming through the vents.

Any suggestions appreciated!

The dehumidifier should be running continuously, not shut off for days at a time. Use a hygrometer and keep the basement humidity well below 50%.

The mould is not just in the basement but in your HVAC system, so shutting off the basement may not do all that much to reduce the odour.

Ok. Thanks. We actually gutted the basement down to the bare concrete walls and floors, used and anitmicrobial cleaner to kill any mold and KILZed it. We were surprised that the smell got worse after we did so.

It's entirely likely that the humidity is not coming in via your windows or door. The moisture is coming from somewhere. It's possible that it's coming through the block, but not if your symptoms are only on certain days. As a test, put a couple square feet of thick plastic sheet (industrial garbage bags, 6-10 mil plastic from a home store, etc. seal it around the outside edge to the block with a seam sealer tape or a bead of silicone. If the water condenses on the inside, then the water could be seeping through the block. If it forms droplets on the outside, then the air is the problem, not your wall. Get an inexpensive humitistat at your home store and take readings upstairs. If humidity is high up there, it will naturally be high anywhere in the home air can flow, but only condense where it's cold. Above the foundation, what is the construction of your home? If you have rim joists that aren't sealed, you could be taking on warm damp air from outside through the siding/framing on the house. The plastic trick works in lots of places. seal pieces against the wood framing to see if you're getting water vapor ABOVE your foundation. Do you have a sump or a drain in your basement? They can both be sources of humidity in the area if not setup properly. Again, though, it would be happening all the time, not just on certain days.

Thanks to all of you for the tips. I'll try the vinegar tomorrow. Pbrisjar--does it matter if it is white vinegar vs. the brownish cider vinegar? I sprayed the floor and all the walls with a peroxide and baking soda solution yesterday (recommended in a thread that I found on the flooring forum). That seemed to help at first, but I think the smell is coming back. It sounds like I will probably have to buy a lot of primer and seal the odor into the walls and/or the floor. I went to petsmart today and bought a blacklight; hopefully that will help me find the worst areas so that I know where to concentrate my efforts. I have a feeling the walls are worse than the floor; when applying the peroxide solution I noticed some discoloration and residue about 2 feet up from the floor on a few walls, so those may have been major spraying locations. I bought a large bottle of an enzymatic cleaner that sounded like it might help with older stains, but it was $35 and I know it won't be enough for the whole area, so if it's not much different from vinegar I may as well return it for a refund. Yes, I'm sure the prior owners knew about it. I have no idea how they managed to hide it every time that I came to the house (I have a sensitive nose), and it irks me that they did. If I'd known, I could have had a painter seal everything before I moved in, while it was still empty. At the closing, the owner mentioned that the cats had been "stressed" because of the move; I guess she knew that I would soon discover the smell. Thanks again!!

Well, I would be sure that no food is anywhere that they can get into, not even crumbs. I found that they liked to run under the kitchen cupboards behind the baseboard. So I took the bottom drawer out and placed a mouse trap there. That usually did the trick. (But then you seem to be catching them well.) I suggest you see if you have a bottom kitchen drawer that exposes the under area of your kitchen cupboards. Then be sure that no petfood or anything else is available to them. They can chew through sacks.

Pictures of the system and vent (flue) ductwork would help. Rereading this my first guess is they didnt actually seal the joints. Thinking of a different post recently, it is not common practice for them to think about sealing flue joints but with this pressurized direct vent system they need to, the long horizontal run would be another indication for sealing. Either with furnace cement which requires taking the flue apart and applying while putting it together or using a high temp silicone with it in place. This is the best stuff I could find with good reviews. https://www.amazon.com/Rutland-600-Degree-Silicone-Cartridge-10-3-Ounce/dp/B001GP3AE6/ You do want to seal around the foundation penetration. Critters, insects and cold air can get in. The high temp caulking would work for that as well. Is there anything to protect the vent and intake from touching the foundation wall? It appears you had corrosion there in the past and would probably happen again. If you can get the caulking between the ducts and the foundation that would probably suffice.

Attempting to kill all mould instead of cleaning and removing mouldy materials is a futile task, according to Inspectapedia. ( See link.) Kilz is for stains.

And there is no alternative to mechanical dehumidification to keep basement RH below 50%. AC is partially effective. But as homes have become tighter, it doesn't run long enough to do the job. Mould is always in the air. But humidity plus food enables it to grow to annoying quantities.

In my basement I have two dehumidifiers located in different places with humidistats controlling the receptacle for the dehumidifier. The units themselves are set at the minimum humidity and the humidistats at slightly blow 50%. One of the units drains directly into the floor drain and the other will do so eventually.

If you have leaky return air duct work the basement,its sucking basement air into your home upstairs. What do the walls look like? can you seal/close the windows? Any bulk, liquid water, draining from your a/c or dehumidifer, needs to be draining into a covered drain. Insure your basement is seal as much as possible. Stop the mirgration of vapor into your basement 1st. And your stop the mold growth. If your have ground..it must be covered. if you have concrete, with lots of cracks, seal them...U may consider sealing the concrete floor...but this isnt the place for anymore of this information. Get a pro involved.
