I just spent 6 months researching 30" ranges. You may want to reach a little higher $$$-wise to get much better value, but you might try this Frigidaire for $829 after rebate:

+1 on the Frigidaire. I've had a similar model (same burners, no convection or stainless steel) for about five years now and I would buy another in a heartbeat. In fact, I'm remodeling an investment property now and chose another Frigidaire a couple more models down the line. I have every confidence it will meet the needs of most cooks whose last names are not Lagasse, Ray, or Batali. :-)

You also could check out Whirlpool's line. I found Whirlpool somewhat more expensive than Frigidaires with equivalent features, but you might come across a deal and a Whirlpool will meet your needs as well.

Make sure whatever range you get is convertible to use propane...not all of them are. And of course you will get lower performance with propane than with natural gas so keep that in mind when evaluating various ranges.

Another possibility for you: the Amana AGR5735. I was happy enough with the one we found in our rental that we bought one for our new house. People will tell you that Amana is not at the top of Consumer Report's reliability list but then the high-end stuff people like here is quite a bit less reliable than Amana. I've had no problems with the two we've had over five years or so. It has a 16K BTU/hr burner (14K after conversion to propane, which is what we use), good heavy-duty, continuous cast iron grates (better than on the Maytag version, I think), simmer settings adjustable to very low via screws under the control knobs, the largest oven I've ever seen in a 30" range. Well within your budget, should be available for $700 or so, the AGR5835 adds convection for about $800. Despite what Trixie said, I don't thing you'd find anything in your price range that couldn't be converted to propane. Most (for sure the Amana) are even shipped with the conversion kit included. But there's no harm in checking to be sure. Trixie's advice about performance is good. The derating is typically 10% or so but some (some GE models in particular) suffer much bigger losses for some reason.

We bought a Bosch free standing gas range (one notch below the top of the line) about 2 years ago after many, many years with electric, and like it a lot. The oven does conventional and convection, which very nicely browns roasts. The broiler is terrific, and you don't have to keep the oven door open when you broil, a nuisance with electric. The continuous grates across the cooking top make it easy to slide pots and pans, and the sealed burners are easy to keep clean.

One word of caution: The range is EXACTLY 30 inches wide. That means it will not fit into a 30 inch wide opening. Most 30 inch ranges are about 29 15/16 inches wide, which allows a little wiggle room in a 30 inch opening. So check your measurements carefully.

By the way, the Bosch is available in Sears. Bosch is a German company, but their products are made or assembled in the US.

I was deciding between Frigidaire (the very range that Julianne mentioned) and GE. Most of the appliance stores I visited recommended GE as being better quality. I have no idea if that's true or not, but it made me suspicious that the Frigidaire had a lot more bells and whistles (convection, fifth burner) for less money. ;-)

I finally got the GE, not so much because of this, but because I decided on a GE OTR microwave and I wanted the styles to match.

Did get a Frigidaire refrigerator though, and I'm very happy with it.
