Dealers love to sell extended warranties. It's pure profit.

I've always maintained, that as far as Miele appliances are concerned, if it's going to fail, it'll do it right out of the box, or shortly thereafter. My experience has been (and I've been a Miele customer for many, many years) that once a Miele appliance is up and running, it will remain trouble-free for pretty much the life of the appliance.

My advice would be, don't waste your money.

Thanks so much, wa8b, for your advice. We are building a new home and this is my first experience buying high-end appliances. Of course, the dealer was really trying to make me think I needed the ext. warranty and I was really having a hard time with that decision.

I agree with Wa8b on this one. But if you wanted to purchase a warranty, I would buy it directly from Miele rather than a third party. I have included a link to the Miele warranty program. I know nothing about it but you can do some research to figure out what may be available to you.

homepro01, thanks. Between you and wa8b, sounds like I really don't need an extended warranty. I'm off to look at the site you linked, though, just to see how Miele's warranty would compare to my dealer's offer.

Two things

1. If the appliances are installed by an authorized Miele technician, Miele AUTOMATICALLY extends the warranty to two years

2. Miele, and other high end appliances, are price fixed/protected...whatever you want to call it...so the dealer can't offer you any discounts on the product. Find a dealer who will sweeten the deal by throwing in that extended warranty for free. It costs them nothing and can make or break the sale. Oh, and if you want the deal even sweeter, find one who'll do the extended Miele warranty - not the store brand version.

3. As Wa8b points out, issues arise during installation or soon thereafter so extended warranties are probably a waste of money

We have an all Miele appliance kitchen. One of the DW was re-used from th old kitchen, it's only 10 years old and has a LOT of life left in it. About a year ago we had a problem with it. Miele promptly sent out a technician who ordered the part we needed, showed me how I was to put it in when it came and the service call cost $140 and $28 and change for the part. The part arrived within two days, I installed it and we've been problem free since then. The technician followed up by phone within a week to make sure tha part came, I was able to install it and the problem was solved. You can't beat CS like that. It's one of the reasons we went all Miele this time. And I've had a few issues with the new stuff, but nothing that Miele did not see right all within the original one year warranty. That No Lemons - guaranteed clause in their warranty contract? They stand behind it. Speaking from experience :)

We're getting the Miele fridge w/freezer on bottom; Miele electric cooktop; Miele dishwasher; & Miele large capacity washer & dryer. (Gaggenau ovens; Thermador downdraft)

The warranty extension to 2 years if installed by a Miele technician just came to our rescue. We have 2 Excellas, almost 2 years old. One of them experienced a water fault error, meaning the water chamber was breached and a service call was required. The service tech came promptly the next day, and determined that while we didn't have a water leak, there were signs that excess soap had bubbled to raise the float that detects a water leak. While we've always been careful to use a minimum amount of dishwasher powder, I discovered that a family member was using the typical amount with the Short cycle, which literally runs too short to adequately remove the soap. The Short cycle should be run with very little or no soap. Anyway, the warranty covered this service call, which involved cleaning & resetting the float detector.

We have:

Miele All Freezer 36" unit
Miele All Refrigerator 36" unit
Miele Double ovens with self Clean
Miele G series DW (at least 8 yrs old - probably older)
Miele Optima DW
Our cooktop is a De Dietrich 309x. Miele cooktops weren't available when we installed our appliances or we probably would have gone with them as well.

We have a Maytag washer and dryer that refuse to die - they are 15+ years old. I'd certainly look at the Miele brand when it comes time to replace them.

I have Miele's extended warranties on my double oven, hood and warming drawer. Have had the appliances since 2006. Have had no trouble with any of them but I felt better buying the warranties. At that time the cost was $400 plus for all 3. I was also concerned about the electronics in the ovens. In all fairness, I do not use the ovens everyday. I have a Wolf 5 burner cooktop and really like it and have no warranty on that.

However, I bought my Miele 4840 and 9820 washer and dryer from Expo on May 28, 2008 and forgot I had 11 months to buy the warranties. And Expo went out of business this past spring so I never got any notification of my warranty expiration. I have been dissatisfied with the washer because it did not have the ability to add an extra rinse to the cycle automatically and the dryer was not drying the clothes. I read on the laundry website that Miele could come out with their computer and correct the dryer issue because it has been a prominent complaint. I called and the Miele tech came the next day and corrected the moisture percentage and programmed the washer with an extra rinse cycle automatically. No charge. It was then I found out that I could not buy the warranties. I called Miele and wanted to buy the warranties and was told I was too late. I asked why Miele does not notify you of the warranty purchase like Kitchenaid and GE and she said the dealer is supposed to do that. Well Expo went out of business this past spring but the woman didn't care and so my $4000 machines are sitting there with no warranties whatsoever. I am going to call back tomorrow however and try again and the warranties are from date of purchase not date of delivery. I got my washer in June but the correct dryer (3rd times a charm) didn't arrive until July. I also did not have a certified Miele tech install it-I called two and got no response. Not even a call back. Oh well.

The machines are expensive and all electronic so I would have peace of mind if I had the warranties. I think the company is losing money by not at least sending an email to the registered appliance owner.

Caveat emptor: If you are purchasing a new model Miele, then I would opt for the Miele extended warranty. The issue with Miele or Asko for that matter is that their US based operations are not near the levels of their European operations. You will find that the customer service, when contacting Miele, can be a run around. I will not purchase another new model Miele until it has been out for a minimum of two years. Early adopters pay a heavy price for what is essentially troubleshooting of new Miele models.

I went with Miele for my new oven and induction cooktop partially based on their supposed superb service after the sale. I have had an issue with my oven and I have to say I am less than impressed with their phone support. Their answer was that I basically didn't know how to cook, despite having been pretty successful over the past 25 years or so. I was able to get to someone "higher-up" who wasn't much more helpful, but was going to give me a call the next day. A week later, and 3 return calls from me, still no response. Very disappointed. I love the appliances, but would have gone with Wolf had I known obtaining service was going to be such a hassle. It was professionally installed by a Miele certified installer which doubled the warranty. So what gives, what happened to that legendary Miele service?

I echo your sentiment. If Miele Germany were smart they would WFR the entire US based operations (except Miele's service department), move operations to the West Coast, and start anew. Their current customer service is disingenuous and horrid as best. They do not even know Miele's product lineup!

Miele products are still very high on our list, but something needs to drastically change for my wife and me to purchase another Miele product. Superseding Miele US and writing directly to Miele Germany is a far better path to pursue if you have customer service issue; Miele US is an utter waste of time.

Very unfortunate that we need to write Germany to get satisfactory results. A long time to wait to get someone to look at my, not 100% functioning correctly, $3500 oven. Miele, straighten up your act in this country before it is too late. I'm sure Wolf loves to hear these bad customer service stories.
